Remembering GEETA DUTT-The Nigtingale of Bollywood on her 86th Birth Anniversary

Geeta Dutt a legendary singer was born on 22nd Nov 1930.Before her marriage with Guru Dutt she was known as Geeta Roy.She was  born in Faridpur before the Partition of India. She found particular prominence as a playback singer in Hindi cinema. She also sang many modern Bengali songs, both in film and non-film genre.
In 1942, her parents moved to an apartment in Bombay. Geeta was twelve and continued her schooling at the Bengali High School.K. Hanuman Prasad took Geeta under his patronage, trained and groomed her in singing and later launched her into singing for movies. In 1946, she got the first break with an opportunity to sing in the mythological film Bhakta Prahlad for which Prasad was the music director. She was given only two lines to sing for a few songs.
In the initial stages of her career, Geeta's voice seemed suitable for devotional songs. In fact in the Dilip Kumar-Nargis starrer, Jogan, many devotional songs, including ones written by Meera Bai were sung by Geeta, the most popular being Ghoonghat ke pat khol re, tohe piya milenge and Mai toh Girdhar ke Ghar Jaaungi.

In 1947, she got her break with Do Bhai. The music of Do Bhai became a hit with "Mera sundar sapna beet gaya" topping the charts. The song touched the pulse of thousands of music lovers. She was popularly nick-named "Bangal ka jadu" (the magic from Bengal). In the same film she sang the evocative "Yaad karoge, yaad karoge, ik din humko yaad karoge." It was remarkable for a teenager to sing with such maturity.
Mera sundar sapna beet gaya

In 1949 with the release of Mahal and the  runaway success of Aayega Aanewala made Lata Mangeshkar the Voice of India and she became an undisputed leader in Hindi Films.but during that period Geeta Dutt emerged as another female voice. The uncanny ability of Geeta Dutt that made her race past her contemporaries was her unique versatility to sing any kind of song with the authentic tone, feeling, passion and emotion

Geeta Dutt's chart-busting "Tadbeer se bigdi hui taqdeer bana le" in Guru Dutt's directorial debut Baazi (1951) was the turning point S D Burman fully exploited Geeta's potential across the spectrum. "Aan milo shyam saanware" (Devdas, 1955), the duet with Manna Dey, has the unmistakable touch of the Baulfolk music of Bengal. "Nanhi kali sone chali" (Sujata, 1959) is one of the most popular and heart-touching lullaby ever where Geeta Dutt's voice rings maternal love in every note. The bubbly exuberance of "Aye dil mujhe bata de" (Bhai Bhai, 1956) is in sharp contrast to the pathos of "Waqt ne kiya" in (Kaagaz Ke Phool, 1959).
Babuji Dheere Chalna

Geeta Dutt also sang for other Music directors also gave many hit songs,In Aar Paar she sang for O P Nayyar gave memorable songssuch as Babuji Dheere Chalna and Yeh Lo Main Haari Piya.
During Geeta's recording of songs for the movie Baazi, she met its young and upcoming director, Guru Dutt. Their romance culminated in marriage on 26 May 1953

Geeta Dutt's singing career began to get affected. As her husband got involved with his new leading lady, Waheeda Rehman, the singer's career too took a dive. Ironically, she continued to be the playback singer for the actress.Geeta Dutt came up with one of her best renditions in the heart-rending "Waqt ne kiya kya haseen sitam," composed by S. D. Burman and penned by Kaifi Azmi where she poured out her pain, anguish and pathos in every word.

With Guru Dutt's demise in 1964, Geeta suffered a nervous breakdown. It is said when she recovered, she realised her place was taken by other singers. However, the fighter that she was, she fought her way back, delivering a stunning performance in Anubhav, which also turned out to be her last performance. She ultimately succumbed to cirrhosis of liver and passed away on 20th July 1972.She was only 42 years old that time.

My tribute to Geeta Dutt
You are the darling of the nation, you are not physically present but we know that your voice remains, your songs remain at the heart among the millions of your fans all over the globe for all the times to come.

Remembering PREMNATH on his 90th Birth Anniversary

Premnath  was born on November 21, 1926 in a Punjabi family residing in Peshawar (situated in Pakistan after independence). His first Bollywood film 'Ajit' which was released in the year 1948 was also one of the first color films made in the Hindi film industry

He tasted success with appearances in films like 'Aag' and 'Barsaat'.As an actor was more acceptable to his audiences in the supporting cast or in a villainous role as against the lead role in a Hindi film. In fact, films which portrayed Prem Nath as the lead negative character went on to make record business in the history of Bollywood box office and were declared super hits in India.

Prem Nath fell in love with Bollywood leading lady Bina Rai when he was shooting for the film 'Aurat'. The couple married after a brief courtship and together opened a production company P N Films.
Prem Nath and Bina Rai parented children Prem Krishen, who went on to become a Bollywood actor and Kailash Nath. His younger brother was comedian Rajendra nath, their sister was Raj Kapoor's wife Krishna.
He earned his first Filmfare nomination for best supporting actor for the film 'Shor ,though he was nominated for 'Bobby', 'Amir Garib' and 'Roti Kapda Aur Makaan.
Prem Nath's health condition deteriorated since his last Bollywood appearance 'Hum Dono' in 1985. He subsequently succumbed to a fatal heart attack in the year 1992. Prem Nath was 66 years of age at the time of death

This song is from a film called Chaar Paise-1955. This is a funny song and dance video of Kishore Kumar. Funnier was the fact that though this film was passed by the Censors on 12-12-1955, the film was never released in theatres

Kaahe paise pe itna guroor kare hai

Is duniya mein sabse achchi cheez hai kya jee paisa

Paanch rupaiyya barah aana

This song from “Chalti ka naam gaadi”(1958) is a song that  surprises the listeners in a delightful way. Madhubala sings some romantic and inviting “come near” lines, only to be greeted by Kishore Kumar insisting on getting his Rs 5 and paise 75 from her.

Remembering Salil Chowdhury on his Birth Anniversary

Salil Chowdhury(19 November 1923 – 5 September 1995) was an Indian music composer, who mainly composed for BengaliHindi and Malayalam filmsHe was an accomplished composer and arranger who was proficient in several musical instruments, including flute, the piano, and the esraj.
Popularly known as Salil Da made his debut in the Hindi Film Industry  in 1953 as the Music Director for Do Bigha Zamin. The story of that film was written by him,it became the first film to win the Filmfare Best Movie Award and won the international Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
Song from Do Bigha Zameen 1958

Salil's music was a blending of Eastern and the Western music traditions. His compositions often used folk melodies or melodies based on Indian classical ragas but the orchestration was very much western in its construction. He developed a style which was immediately identifiable. He was given Filmfare Best Music Director Award for Madhumati in 1958.
He was one of the leading composers of Golden Era of Bollywood. He went on to compose for over 75 Hindi films, over 40 Bengali films, around 27 Malayalam films, and a few MarathiTamilTeluguKannadaGujaratiOriya and Assamesefilms.
The flawless harmony with which Salil da used an array of musical instruments suggests a unique understanding of instruments. Raj Kapoor once described him as a genius who could play everything from tabla to sarod and piano to piccolo. He gave music in Raj Kapoor's Jagte Raho
Song from Jagte Raho 1956

His songs for "Biraj Bahu", "Naukri", "Amaanat", "Taangewaali", "Awaaz", "Parivaar", "Jaagte Raho", "Apradhi Kaun" and "Ek Gaon Ki Kahaani" are still popular. Then came "Madhumati" in 1958. Its 12 songs, including Ajaa re pardesi, Suhana safar and Dil tadap, continue to be wildly popular.
Song from Madhumati 1958

The songs of "Parakh", "Usne Kaha Tha", "Chhaya", "Maya", "Kabuliwala", "Anand", "Mere Apne", "Rajnigandha", "Choti si baat", "Jeevan jyothi", "Mrigaya", "Annadata", "Anand Mahal" followed but with an intolerable gap between each. "Swami Vivekananada" in 1994 was his last Hindi film.
Music lovers in Tamil Nadu too recognise Salil Chowdhury's music from Malayalam films like "Chemmeen". Kadalinakkare ponore is a song that held Tamil Nadu too in a spell for over 40 years.
Though his contribution to Tamil films appears to be little it is not an exaggeration to say that Salil da was a trendsetter on the scene. Both Ilayaraja and A.R. Rahman followed the path charted by him. Ilayaraja was introduced to the film industry as guitarist and combo organ player in Salil da's recordings and his influence on Ilayaraja is evident. R.K. Sekhar, Rahman's father, worked with Salil da as an assistant. Rahman himself testifies that attending Salil da's recording sessions at a young age left an indelible impression on him.

Salil Chowdhury's contribution to modern Indian music is not as well known as it deserves. The composer's 94th birth anniversary fell on November 19. A tribute.with his Milestone Songs

Remembering JOHNNY WALKER on his 96th Birth Anniversary

Johnny Walker (11 Nov 1920 – 29 July 2003)
He was born as Badruddin Jamaluddin Kazi in Indore, the son of a mill worker. Looking after his 15-member family was tough; five of the family died young. Johnny Walker tried his hand at almost everything, including working in the Bombay Electric Supply Transport buses as a conductor. He was posted at the Dadar bus depot but worked on several routes.

Comedians like Noor Mohammad and Charlie were his idols. Johnnysaab had always wanted to be a comedian; he believed it was his God-given duty to make people laugh.
He did his first bit role in the early 1950s and had enacted similar snippets in about 20 films but the real break was given by Guru Dutt in Baazi(1951),his new screen name Johnny Walker was given by Guru Dutt.Thereafter he was doing all the films of Guru Dutt.Films like Taxi Driver(1954) CID,Pyaasa,Madhumati,Naya Daur and Mere Mehboob made him a star.He was sought by the best banners and the best directors and was equal to the task of acting with the best of the stars.
He was offered many films(around 12) as a hero such as JOHNNY WALKER ,Mr Cartoon, These, of course, had comic themes but were embellished with wonderful music and did well at the box office.
His Golden Period was 50s and 60s when he gave memorable and great performances.
He was a natural comedian, his comedy was never crude or vulgar. But, 1970 onwards, comedy began to change. Some of the comedians indulged in lewd gestures and relied on double-entendre.Johnny Walker never tried that type of comedy,In an interview he said that though he acted more than 300 films and the Censor Board never cut even one line of his character.

He was the comedian for whom famous music directors like S D Burman and O P Nayyar tuned some of their most memorable hits. Remember Tael maalish, champee or Yeh hain Bombay meri jaan? His drawing power at the box office was such that Distributors insisted the Producers and Directors to have atleast one song to be done with him.His song sequences in Doordarshan'sChitrahaar or cable television are highly appreciated.
