This Blog was started as a one-man’s passion for film history but has now become an addiction for many music lovers who are equally passionate about Hindi films
In the 40s and 50s, the Hindi film hero seldom danced. On the rare occasion that he did, like Raj Kapoor in ‘Mud mud ke na dekh’ or in ‘Dil ka haal suney dilwaala’ in Shree 420, Dilip Kumar in Naya Daur. Dev Anand though not a good dancer tried dancing in many songs. He relied solely on his facial expressions and the inimitable way in which he moved his head to enact most of these songs. The first time we can see him dancing a few steps in the song ‘Mere Labon Pe Dekho Aaj Bhi Taraaney Hain’ (Baazi), ‘Chaahey koi Khush Ho Chaahey Gaaliyaan Hazaar De’ (Taxi Driver) or ‘Oonche Sur Mein Gaaye Ja’ (House No.44), Ladhi Aankh Se Aankh - Pocket Maar(1956), Ae Meri Topi Palat Ke Aa from Funtoosh(1956) in most of the films he danced in his own style.
In the early 60s, Dev Anand was seen in many films, singing, and dancing such as Sarhad. Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja, Love Marriage were a few of these. He had some surprisingly awkward moments when called upon to dance. Tasveer Teri Dil Mein from the 1961 Maya is a lovely song, but watch the scene: Anand is passable when he is just bobbing his head and clasping his hands while Mala Sinha does most of the work.
I have selected such songs in which we can see Dev Anand dancing maybe not as a perfect dancer but he had his own steps, own style.
Dev Anand gave Bollywood some of its most memorable films. One of the highlights of Dev Anand's films was its songs. As per him, the songs were the soul of a film. He always made it sure that he gets a few songs on him. He even rejected the films in which there is no song for the hero. One such movie was 'Zanjeer' offered to him, which finally went to Amitabh Bachchan.
He was the Indian actor with the maximum number of hit songs and his numbers are the A to Z of film music. He appeared in more than 100 films and 500 plus songs were picturized on him. In this blog, I have collected songs picturized on him on every letter of the English alphabet. Surprisingly except for the letter 'X', his songs started from all the alphabets of English.

The acting was in his blood, he grew up in the cinema atmosphere all around him. He was the grandson of Prithviraj Kapoor, son of the greatest showman of Bollywood Raj Kapoor, and nephew of Shammi and Shashi Kapoor. He wrote in his Biography,"For me, there could have been no film institute better than RK Studio. Film sets were not out of bounds for us, we grew up comfortable in that ambiance. The language, the stories and discussions at home were almost entirely on films.
.I was two years old when I faced a camera.I have no recollection of that acting debut it is captured in the film. I have heard many tales of that day when my father cast him along with my brother and sister in the immortal song 'Pyar Hua Ikrar Hua. from Shree 420. The three of us had to walk through the rain scene.
From very early on, we were also exposed to another side of the film profession. the name, fame, and gossips are part of this life. We were natural to all these. Most of the Kapoors were dropout of schools, acting was their natural profession so he was. When he was in school Mera Naam Joker was offered to him. He played the role of the young Joker. Raj Kapoor fine-tuned his performance by rehearsing every shot of him many times.
Mera Naam Joker was released in 1970, the film flopped but his performance was appreciated. He got the National Award for his performance. His next film Bobby was a super hit He got the best actor award for this film..Between 1973 and 2000 he starred as the romantic lead in 92 films
Rishi Kapoor was diagnosed with leukemia in 2018 and went to New York City for treatment but after returning home he again fell ill and died on 30 April 2020
He started his career early, as a child actor in his father’s film Mera Naam Joker (1970), for which he won a Filmfare Award and National Award. His first role as an adult came in the iconic Bobby (1973) opposite Dimple Kapadia. He became the craze and superstar with that film. Since then he played the romantic lead in 92 films, which include 41 multi starrer films.
Rishi Kapoor in an interview said that " I was not allowed to show my range. Everybody wrote a romantic hero for me. I tried to break free but the word they used for me was cute. My pet name, Chintu, added to that image. No doubt, I was good at singing songs and romancing young heroines on screen, but that didn’t mean you make me do the same thing for 25 years. Sirf gaane gaata raha. Only the locations changed – from Ooty to Switzerland to Kashmir valley,” Rishi Kapoor had 51 films as the solo lead hero from 1973 to 2000, but 40 of them were box office flops and only 11 managed to hit. These were Bobby, Laila Majnu (1976 film), Rafoo Chakkar, Sargam, Karz, Prem Rog, Nagina, Honeymoon, Chandni, Heena, and Bol Radha Bol.
In 2018, Rishi Kapoor was diagnosed with cancer, following which the actor was in New York for more than a year to receive treatment. While he returned to India this year, he had again been hospitalized in New Delhi in early February, while on a visit to New Delhi.
He died on 30 April 2020 from complications with cancer in H.N. Reliance Hospital Mumbai
Awards may have eluded him but he is still a Living Legend of Bollywood. He came at the time when Rajesh Khanna was not a Star and continued to win the hearts of his fans. He continued to have his own audience irrespective of whether it was Rajesh Khanna or Amitabh Bachchan who was the ruling superstars of the 70s and 80s. The press made fun of his tight white trousers and white shoes and labeled him “Jumping Jack Jeetu” for his boisterous dance moves. Rishi Kapoor in an interview once said that his fellow actors Jeetendra and Rakesh Roshan never got their due, even when they contributed so much to the Indian cinema. Jeetendra (born Ravi Kapoor on 7 April 1942) got his break-in 1964 with V Shantaram's Geet Gaya Patharon Ne as a hero but got star status with the release of Farz in 1967. The film was a super-duper hit He became a star overnight. He had 3 hits before Rajesh Khanna became Superstar with Aradhana in 1969. Even when Rajesh Khanna was giving one hit after another his films were also clicking on the Box Office. In those three years from 1970 to 1973, he appeared in more than 25 films and gave super hits like Jeene Ki Raah, Jigri Dost, Waris, Khilona, Humjoli, Caravan, Anokhi Ada etc. During the Sunami of Amitabh Bachchan he was among a few heroes who survived and gave many hits.during that period up to 1980, more than 40 films were release4d.In fact, in the 80s he was in demand. In the 1980s, Jitendra was frequently paired up with Sridevi or Jayapradha for remakes of South Indian potboilers courtesy of Rama Rao Tatineni, K. Bapayya and K. Raghavendra Rao; some of these films were produced by Padmalaya Productions. Featuring elaborate sequences with colorful clay pots, dozens of extras, electronic music by Bappi Lahiri, and lyrics by Indeewar, movies like Justice Chaudhry (1982), Mawaali (1983), Himmatwala (1983), Jaani Dost, and Tohfa (1984) were huge hits despite low critical acclaim. In the 1990s Jeetendra found it difficult to cope up in the rat race. His films ‘Santaan’ (1993) and ‘Udhaar Ka Zindagi’ (1995) failed at the box-office. Recognizing the change in tide, he turned into a character actor and was seen in films like ‘Dil Aashna Hai’, 'Zamana Deewana' and 'Dushman Duniya Ka'. Last, he was seen in ‘Kucch To Hai’ (2003) and did a special appearance for ‘Om Shanti Om’ (2007). He has acted in nearly 200 films as the main lead, a feat matched by just a handful of his peers since the inception of Hindi cinema.Out of these 200 films 125 films were hit.
Master Nisar( 5-3-1902 -13-7-1980) was the most popular hero of the early talkie films. His ability to speak fluent Urdu and sing songs made him an instant success. He worked in the second Talkie Movie Shirin Farhad (1931), which was super hit. He made a sought-after team with actress Jehan Ara Kajjan.both of them gave many hit movies one after another. His popularity was immense, people used to flock in large numbers to studios to catch a glimpse of him. It is said that once due to a very large crowd gathered to see him, the Governor of Bengal was forced to divert his car to another road. He was the first actor in the Hindi film industry to own a Rolls Royce car. His heroines were many like Padma Devi, Zebunnisa, Bibbo, Haseena, Sardar Akhtar, Kanta, etc He also acted in India’s first homemade the color film ‘Kisaan Kanya’ (1937). This was also his last film as a hero. His popularity started to decrease in the wake of the rise of K L Saigal, Ashok Kumar, Surendra etc. After that, he switched to character roles. He appeared in 75 films during his career. The situation came that he would take whatever role came his way. The last time he was seen in the 1971 film Guddi, Those who have seen film ‘Guddi’ (1971), there is a scene in which a lanky, thin person is massaging Om Prakash. Dharmendra tells Guddi, “Do you know who he is? Master Nissar, one time a great actor who was popular and very rich. In the 50s he was seen in many Qawwalis, He was seen as the on-screen lead singer in the qawwali “Aaj Kyon Hum Se Parda Hai” in the film ‘Sadhna’ (1958). He was also seen in the popular Qawwali '"Na to Karvan ki Talash Hain” from Barsat Ki Raat. In later years, Master Nisar fell on hard times and was often seen begging near the Haji Ali Dargah, Mumbai. He died in penury in 1980.
Shammi Kapoor (21 October 1931 – 14 August 2011) became a star with the release of Tumsa Nahin Dekha in 1957. After Junglee was released in 1961, he was giving one hit after another, he became the most sought-after hero along with Dev Anand. There was a tough competition with Dev Anand's films. Dev Anand once said that the Sixties was the decade when I faced the true competition from Shammi Kapoor. My Jab Pyar Kissi Se Hota Hai had a silver jubilee run, while his Junglee completed its golden jubilee. Similarly, my Hum Dono and his Professor ran to silver jubilees within a span of a few months. The releases of our films were eagerly awaited and seen many times by our fans throughout the nation. There was a time when Shammi Kapoor was not accepted as a hero. He had about 18 failures against his illustrious surname before writer-director Nasir Husain’s Tumsa Nahin Dekha (1957) catapulted him into fame and stardom. Shammi Kapoor. Shammi Kapoor in a program on TV once said that he owes his stardom to Dev Anand, had he accepted the do the film Tumsa Nahin Dekha which, Nasir Hussain wanted to make him the hero, he would not be here where he is today. Same way Junglee was offered to Dev Anand which again Dev Saab refused to do so the film came to him. Subodh Mukerji’s tentatively titled film Mr. Hitler, the name later changed to Junglee. Similarly, in the case of Teesri Manzil, Dev Anand was the first choice of Nasir Hussain but there cropped up some controversy between Dev Saab and Nasir Hussain, the film went to Shammi Kapoor again. Dev Anand once admitted to Rauf Ahmed in an interview, 'I created my biggest rival. With every film I let go, he [Shammi Kapoor] shot to fame but Dev Anand never had any animosity with Shammi Kapoor. In fact after the demise of Shammi Kapoor in an interview, Dev Saab said that we shared a warm rapport, and I must confess that he was the right choice for Teesri Manzil, far better than me. Both had some similarities, both played the urban hero. both banked upon their songs, both had a flair for music and had a unique style. On working together Dev Anand said that both of us were to have starred in Shakti Samanta's One Night To Murder which never went on the floors. Shammi was kind enough to appear in a cameo as a judge in my film Censor.
