Shakeel Badayuni- The Lyricist who gave us many Immortal Songs


Shakeel Badayuni started his film career with the 1947 film "Dard". The first song was written by him "Afsana Likh Rahi Hoon" sung by Uma Devi (TUN TUN) became super hit. 
The music of the film was given by Naushad. 
Together, he and Naushad became one of the most sought after composer/lyricist duos. They created many immortal songs of Bollywood. Kindly recall the songs of Deedar (1951), Baiju Bawra (1952), Mother India (1957), and Mughal-e-Azam (1960), Ganga Jamuna (1961), and Mere Mehboob (1963) that stand out. 
Naushad used Shakeel as the lyricist for his tunes for most of his films for a period of 24 years. Baiju Bawra, which was a milestone in both of their careers,
He also collaborated with Ravi and Hemant Kumar as well. His lyrics for the song Husnwale Tera Jawab Nahin and Ravi's music score both won Filmfare Awards for the hit film Gharana. His other notable film with Ravi is Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960), while Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) is his biggest hit with Hemant Kumar. The title song from Chaudhvin Ka Chand, rendered by Mohammed Rafi, won Badayuni the Filmfare Award for Best Lyricist in 1961.
He penned songs for around 89 films. In addition, he wrote many popular ghazals sung by Begum Akhtar, and which are still sung by vocalists like Pankaj Udhas and others
Shakeel Badayuni succumbed to diabetes complications at the age of fifty-three, on 20 April 1970 at Bombay Hospital

Hasrat Jaipuri - Yaad Kiya Dil Ne Kahan Ho Tum


The songs in the 50s were undoubtedly something great, never before the feeling of love expressed in the most beautiful as this song. This song from the film Patita released in 1953 was penned by the great lyricist Hasrat Jaipuri for Dev Anand for the first time. 
Think of when a great Romantic songwriter Hasrat Jaipuri writes for the King of Romance Dev Anand, the song would be a treat to watch. Recall the songs of Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai, Asli Naqli and Tere Ghar Ke Samne. In this blog, I have selected a few such romantic songs of this great lyricist and hero.
Hasrat Jaipuri was born on 15th April 1922 at Jaipur. He began writing verses when he was around twenty years old. He started his film career with the immortal song Jiya Beqaraar Hai for the film Barsaat in 1949. It was also the first film of Shankar Jaikishan, That was the beginning of a lifelong association.
He gave lyrics for 9 of Dev Anand's films. In almost every film he gave one or two memorable romantic songs. Recall the song Dil Ka Bhanvar Kare Pukar from Tere Ghar Ke Samne or Sau Saal Pehle Mujhe Tumse Pyar Tha from Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai.
He worked in  350 films and 2000 recorded songs, his last releases were Saazish with Jatin-Lalit and Sher Khan (with Bappi Lahiri), and at the time of his death, he was working on a few small films and a book of Shaayari.
He won innumerable awards, honors, and mementos. Among them were two Filmfare trophies. He died on 17th September 1999. He still remains the King Of Romance.

Laxmikant of Laxmikant Pyarelal - A Musical Prodigy



 Laxmikant(3rd Nov 1937- May 25, 1998)  spent his childhood amidst dire poverty in the slums of Vile Parle (East) in Mumbai. He lost his father very early in his life.
His father’s friend, a musician himself, advised Laxmikant to learn music. Accordingly, Laxmikant learned to play the mandolin from the well-known mandolin player Hussain Ali and later from Bal Mukund Indorker and violin from Husnalal (of the Husanlal Bhagatram fame). When he was only 10 years old, he played mandolin in a Lata Mangeshkar concert in Radio Club, Colaba. Lata was so impressed that she talked to him after the concert and asked him to join  Sureel Kala Kendra, a music academy for children, run by the Mangeshkar family. Here he met the young Pyarelal, who was 3years younger to him. They used to spend long hours at the recording studios, sometimes getting work for each other and even playing together whenever they got the opportunity.
Lata Mangeshkar saw talent in him and Pyarelal, helped them to fight poverty by recommending them as a musician to the music directors of that time like Shankar Jaikishan,, OP Nayyar, etc.
In 1953, they became assistants to Kalyanji-Anandji and worked with them as assistants till 1963. They worked as music arrangers for many music directors including Sachin Dev Burman (in Ziddi) and also for his son Rahul Dev Burman (in his first film Chhote Nawab). Laxmikant–Pyarelal and R D Burman remained very good friends, even when Laxmikant–Pyarelal started giving music independently. R D Burman played mouth organ for all songs of Dosti. Laxmikant once made a guest appearance playing the role of himself as a Composer of Song “Dil Ki Baat” in Teri Kasam (1982), which had music by R D Burman.
Laxmikant was a diehard fan of Shankar Jaikishan, in fact In their early days, Laxmikant–Pyarelal's music was very similar to Shankar-Jaikishan's music,  Laxmikant–Pyarelal's first film as music director was not released. The first released movie which featured them as music directors was Babubhai Mistry's Parasmani (1963), all the songs of the film became immensely popular, esp. "Hasata Hua Nurani Chehara", "Wo Jab Yaad Aaye".In the third quarter of 1963, LP’s first-ever songs Hasta Hua Nurani Chehara form Parasmani hit the “Binaca Geet Mala”.
Laxmikant–Pyarelal hit the big time with Rajshri Productions' 1964 film Dosti. The film had two newcomer heroes who never became popular, and the film was a success due to its music. They won their first Filmfare Best Music Director Award for this movie, ahead of stalwarts like Shankar-Jaikishan (for Sangam) and Madan Mohan (for Woh Kaun Thi?). Then came Lootera, a superhit musical non-star cast film, which is remembered only because of Lata Mangeshkar's superhit songs with Laxmikant–Pyarelal.
In 1966 L-P consolidated its place in Hindi film music. L-P's first musical hit film, with a big star cast, Aaye Din Bahar Ke was released, followed by Pyar Kiye Jaa.In the same year few more of their films released such as Sant Gyaneshwar (Songs: "Jyot Se Jyot Jagate Chalo",); in Hum Sab Ustaad Hai (Songs: "Pyar Batate Chalo", "Ajanabi Tum Jane Pehachane Se"); in Mr. X in Bombay (Songs: "Mere Mehboob Quayamat Hogi", "Chali Re Chali Re Gori", "Khoobsurat Haseena"); and in Shriman Fantush..(Songs: "Sultana Sultana Tu Na Ghabarana", "Yeh Dard Bhara Afasana"). 
In 1967 LP received their second Filmfare Trophy for Milan without any stiff competition. That year this Jodi gave a series of hits, one after another. Non-star cast film Farz was L-P's first golden jubilee musical hit, followed by big star cast films such as AnitaShagird, yet another Golden Jubilee hit, Patthar Ke Sanam,
They dominated the music industry along with R D Burman in the 70s and 80s.theycomposed over 3000 songs, or even more, in nearly 500 films. After Milan, they won 5 more Filmfare awards. for Best Music Director.
Their music in Bobby has been rated the 17th best soundtrack ever by Planet Bollywood on their "100 Greatest Bollywood Soundtracks". Other soundtracks in the list include Amar Akbar Anthony (25), Roti Kapada Aur Makaan (27), Dosti (32), Hero (36), Ek Duuje Ke Liye (44), Karz (50), Ram Lakhan (59), Kranti (61), Tezaab (65), Do Raaste (74), Milan (75), Khalnayak (77) and Prem Rog (85).
Laxmikant died on May 25, 1998, Pyarelal went to self retirement.

The Mesmarizing Music of the two Great Stalwarts of Golden Era of Bollywood


13 years apart were born the two great stalwarts of Hindi Film Music, S D Burman(1st Oct 1906) and Majrooh Sultanpuri(1919). to create magic in Hindi Films. They partnered in 20 films from 1957 to 1976, leaving behind many unforgettable gems. The first song written by Majrooh and composed by Sd Burman was " Woh Sapne wali Raa"t sung by Geeta Roy in the film Pyar (1950). After a gap of 7 years, they worked together in Paying Guest (1957)., they created the song Chhod Do Aanchal Zamaana Kya Kahega after this the next song was "Mana Janaab Ne Pukara Nahin" There were 6 songs in the film, all the songs were hit.
The same year Navketan's Nau Do Gyarah released, once again the magic of both was visible. Aankhon mein kya ji, rupehla baadal became an instant hit its picturization mesmerized the audience. Other songs like Hum Hain Raahi Pyar ke, Humse Kuchh Na Boliye by Kishore,   Aaja Panchhi Akela Hai/So Jaa Nindiya Ki Bela Hai,, by Asha-Rafi are still liked.
Over the years, of course, a large chunk of their films featured Dev Anand, examples being ‘Paying Guest’, ‘Nau Do Gyarah’, ‘Kala Pani’, Manzil’, ‘Solva Saal’, ‘Bombai Ka Baboo’, ‘Baat Ek Raat Ki’, ‘Jewel Thief’ and ‘Teen Deviyan’. 
Besides the Dev Anand films, SD and Majrooh combined on such classics as ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi’ (which had Kishore’s ‘Ek Ladki Bheegi Bhaagi’, the Kishore-Manna Dey song ‘Babu samjho ishaare’ and the Kishore-Asha superhit ‘Haal Kaisa Hai Janaab Ka’) and ‘Sujata’ (which had Talat Mahmood’s unforgettable ‘Jalte Hain Jiske Liye’,
The two of them also worked in films like ‘Lajwanti’, ‘Sitaron Se Aage’, ‘Talaash’, ‘Phagun’ and ‘Sagina’ (remember ‘Saala mein to saahab ban gaya’?) But their biggest hit arguably was in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s 1973 film ‘Abhimaan’, which had ‘Tere mere milan ki yeh raina’ (Lata-Kishore), ‘Teri bindiya’ (Lata-Rafi), ‘Lutey koi man’ (Lata-Manhar Udhas), Kishore’s ‘Meet Na Mila’ and three Lata solos ‘Nadiya Kinarey’, ‘Ab Toh Hai Tumse’ and ‘Piya bina’.

Javed Akhtar - A journey from a Ghost Writer to Super Star Writer


Javed Akhtar was born on 17th Jan 1945, His father was a  famous poet and Lyricist but he had to struggle in his early days in Bombay. He came to Bombay On October 4,1964  Within six days of his arrival he had to leave his father's home. He had 27 paise in his pockets. He had no certainty of either food or shelter.
 He managed to write dialogue for a minor film for Rs100. Sometimes he gets some work as an assistant or otherwise but often even this work eludes him.
He used to write a few scenes for the producers as Ghost Writer, The credit went to the ScreenPlay writer of that film.For this, he was paid a meagre amount of Rs 100.
For a year he had been living in Kamaal Studio (present-day Natraj Studios). He slept wherever he fancy-sometimes in some verandah, sometimes in some corridor, sometimes under some tree. He also slept for few days at the Mahakali Caves (these ancient Buddhist Caves in crowded East Andheri near Kamalistan Studio were a part of a desolate landscape in those days where hemp smoking mendicants layabout).
For a few days he lived with a friend who was a gambler, he taught him the tricks of gambling. For a few days, the cards provided the means of survival. After some days a famous and successful writer called and offered him a job at Rs 600 per month. The work was to ghostwrite for him. There was a struggle of 5 years for him. At last in November 1969 he got some work which in film parlance is called a "break"..
 He got a job as an independent scriptwriter on Yakeen which flopped. Akhtar then joined with his friend Salim Khan to develop the story for Adhikar.After that both wrote for G P Sippy for Andaz, the film was hit and after that Rajesh Khanna asked them to write the screenplay of Haathi Mere Saathi.
Their first big success was the script for Andaz, followed by Adhikar (1971), Haathi Mere Saathi and Seeta Aur Geeta (1972). They also had hits with Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973), Zanjeer (1973), Haath Ki Safai (1974), Deewaar (1975), Sholay (1975), Chacha Bhatija (1977), Don (1978), Trishul (1978), Dostana (1980), Kranti (1981), Zamana (1985) and Mr. India (1987). They have worked together in 24 films including two Kannada films – Premada Kanike and Raja Nanna Raja. Of the 24 films they wrote, 20 were hits.
Javed is an Urdu poet before writing songs for films he was writing poetry.It was Yash Chopra who insisted him to write songs for his film Silsila(1981). After that he gave us many memorable songs He won 5 National Awards for his songs and also 5 Filmfare Awards for lyrics. In 2013, he received the Sahitya Akademi Award in Urdu, India's second highest literary honour, for his poetry collection Lava.
He was also nominated a Rajya Sabha MP.from Nov 2009 to Nov 2015.
He married to Honey Irani, with whom he had two children, Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar, both film directors and actors. The father-and-son duo has worked together in films such as Dil Chahta HaiLakshyaRock On!! and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara with Zoya. He divorced Irani and later married Shabana Azmi, the daughter of eminent Urdu poet, Kaifi Azmi.

The Great Composer Duo of the Golden Era of Bollywood


The duo of Shanker and Jaikishan ruled the Golden Era of Indian Film Music industry with an array of compositions which were remarkable for their unusual concepts and immensely successful. The duo was considered even more important and sellable than the stars of the movies for which they wrote music- their compositions were popular even if the movie itself failed on the box office.
Their association with Lyricist Shailendra and Hasrat Jaipuri was a golden page in annals of Hindi film music, the songs from movies like Barsaat, Awara, Anaari, Chori Chori, Daag, Patita, Kathputli, Yahudi, Dil Ek Mandir, Dil Apna Preet Paraye, Teesri Kasam, Mera Naam Joker, Junglee, Professor, An Evening in Paris, Brahmachari, Aarzoo, Sangam, Andaz and Mera Naam Joker are still fresh in our mind.
‘Barsaat’ ((1949) was the starting point for this foursome. How they met to form the most enduring musical partnership was an accident of fate and that accident was in a way masterminded by another artist called Raj Kapoor, a man with amazing creative talent and vision. 
There were very few occasions when this two lyricist not writing for Shankar Jaikishan. Except for ‘Aarzoo’ and College Girl, the two lyricists found themselves out of S-J favour. The superb chemistry between these four was not merely because they were great artists all. It was more because they were all great friends and great companions who enjoyed each other’s company to the fullest.
Unfortunately, the seeds of dissent and doubt were sown after the release of Sangam between the duo. All the songs were hit but when ‘Binaca Geet Mala’- then a litmus test for popularity- selected Rafi’s ‘Yeh mera prem patra padhkar’  from ‘Sangam’ for the top spot over Mukesh’s ‘Dost dost na raha’ from the same film, Rafi’s song was the creation of Jaikishan- Hasrat team whereas the Mukesh-song was conceived by Shankar-Shailendra combo.
Shankar had this misunderstanding that his song was purposely put down to promote Jaikishan’s song  Due to the intervention of the two lyricists that kept the working relationship intact. This jodi was broken only in 1971 when Jaikishan died. Even after the death of Jaikishan Shankar gave music in many films as Shankar Jaikishan.
Shankar was 7 years elder to Jaikishan. He was born on 15 October 1922. He started his career with a theater group run by Satyanarayan and Hemawati, before shifting to Prithvi Theatre where he played tabla and performed some minor roles in plays. Later he started working as an assistant to the leading composer duo of Husnlal Bhagatram and nurtured the ambition of becoming an independent music director.

S D Burman and Majrooh Sultanpuri- The Creator of Many Immortal Songs


What a day is October 1, the birth anniversary of two of the Golden Era of Bollywood music’s most creative and consistent artists. While music director SD Burman, born in 1906, continued to create melodic magic till his death in 1975, the 1919-born lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri remained active for over five decades, till he passed away in 2000. And the best thing about both these geniuses who shared birthdays was that they combined to create many outstanding songs together.
 Over the years, of course, a large chunk of their films featured Dev Anand, examples being ‘Paying Guest’, ‘Nau Do Gyarah’, ‘Kala Pani’, Manzil’, ‘Solva Saal’, ‘Bombai Ka Baboo’, ‘Baat Ek Raat Ki’, ‘Jewel Thief’ and ‘Teen Deviyan’. On the birth anniversary of the two legends, I look at 15 compositions born of their partnership.
Incidentally, the coming together of the two owed much to the break in the partnership of SD Burman and Sahir Ludhianvi. After the success of Pyaasa (1957), Burman and Ludhianvi fought bitterly to gain credit for the success of the music of Guru Dutt's iconic film. Faced with what he believed to be the obstinacy of the lyricist, Burman decided he would never work with Ludhianvi again. Thus began a partnership with Sultanpuri that lasted till Burman's final years.
Besides the Dev Anand films, SD and Majrooh combined on such classics as ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi’ (which had Kishore’s ‘Ek Ladki Bheegi Bhaagi’, the Kishore-Manna Dey song ‘Babu samjho ishaare’ and the Kishore-Asha superhit ‘Haal Kaisa Hai Janaab Ka’) and ‘Sujata’ (which had Talat Mahmood’s unforgettable ‘Jalte Hain Jiske Liye’, Geeta Dutt’s ‘Nanhi kali sone chali’, Asha and Geeta’s ‘Bachpan ke din’ and SD’s own rendition of ‘Sun mere bandhu’). The Lata song ‘Pawan Deewani’ from ‘Dr Vidya’ was a major hit too.
Here I would like to share this information that the first song written by Majrooh and composed by Sd Burman was " Woh Sapne wali Raat sung by Geeta Roy in the film Pyar (1950). After a gap of 7 years, they worked together in Paying Guest (1957).They worked together for more than 15 years, creating some memorable compositions. While there was a difference of 13 years between the two (Burman was born in 1906, Sultanpuri in 1919), they were inextricably linked by a common birthday. 
The two of them also worked in films like ‘Lajwanti’, ‘Sitaron Se Aage’, ‘Talaash’, ‘Phagun’ and ‘Sagina’ (remember ‘Saala mein to saahab ban gaya’?)
