Neeraj- Karwan Guzar Gaya Ghubaar Dekhte Rahe.

Gopal Das Neeraj was a poet first then a lyricist. He started writing poetry and sharing stage, at times with stalwarts who were mesmerized with the poems of this young man. There are incidents where he used to write poems with another pseudonym, ‘Bhavuk Etahvi’. But once he reached the stage of Kavi Sammelan, there was no looking back for this greatest Hindi poet of all genres.

This Ghazal was aired. on the radio in 1955,  it was included in the film Nayi Umar ki Nayi Fasal in 1966 in fact this film was inspired by this Ghazal. He wrote a few songs for two films Cha Cha Cha and Chanda Aur Bijli before Dev Anand introduced him to S D Burman to write songs for his film Prem Pujari.

He was born in the village of Puravali, near Mahewa in Etawah district in Uttar Pradesh, India on 4 January 1925. He wrote under the pen name "Neeraj"

When Neeraj entered the scene of poetry, Harivansh Rai Bachchan was already an established name on the stage. However, Neeraj carved his way and touched people’s hearts. “His poems gave new life to romanticism which was coupled with spiritualism.  He had an influence of Sri Aurbindo and it flows in his poetry.

Besides writing, he earned his living teaching in a college and was a Professor of Hindi Literature in Dharma Samaj College, Aligarh. He knew Urdu well and cultivated his own style. He used words even from Sanskrit and touched the softness of the Hindi Khadi Boli. The poems were rendered with such eloquence that they were immediately on everyone’s lips. Neeraj’s simplicity was evident in his lifestyle. “He lived a simple life, he understood common people, their sufferings and he lived as if he was one of them, playing cards with them, smoking beedi and wearing simple clothes. Anybody was welcome in his home.

Despite the tremendous recognition he got from film songs, Neeraj considered himself unlucky. This was the reason why he stopped writing songs for films. He started writing only poems and literature. Disclosing this in an interview, he had said that two-three famous Bollywood musicians for whom he had written film songs had passed away. He had said that Jaikishan and SD Burman of the Shankar-Jaikishan duo should also die and he wrote very famous songs for both of them.

Neeraj had penned several immortal songs for Bollywood movies. There were incidents where Neeraj himself recited his songs so that musicians may easily develop the tune. Just sample this — Phoolo ke rang se/dil ki qalam se/tujhko likh roz paati/kaise bataun/kis kis tarah se/pal pal mujhe tu satati — for the film Prem Pujari, anyone can easily identify and attribute it to Neeraj due to its rhythm class.

He mentioned the death of Jaikishan of the Music Duo Shankar-Jaikishan as well as of Sachin Dev Burman, for both of whom he had penned highly popular film songs. The deaths of these Music Directors when they, along with Gopaldas Neeraj were at the peak of their fame left him very dejected and he made a decision to quit the film industry.
His friendship with Dev Anand continued he wrote songs for the last film of Dev Anand "Charge sheet"

He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1991 and Padma Bhushan in 2007. He died on July 19, 2018

Neeraj used to say" People talk of my five years in film industry. They tend to forget my 65 years of contribution to literature".

S D Burman- Always Looking for New Experiments in Music

Music Maestro Pt Shiv Kumar Sharma said in an interview that While composing a song, Dada would say, ‘Even if my songs flop, I will still create something new’. What Dada meant was, ‘I will not take the beaten path. I will not compose as per the existing trend. Even if my songs flop, I will still do something new’.Recall the song 'Tadbeer Se Bigdi Hui Taqdeer Bana De' was written as a Ghazal but he converted it to a club song. Sahir the lyricist of the song was not happy with this but Dada was sure that it would be a hit. Sahir then and there decided that he will never write again for S. D. Burman, but changed his mind after the song became super-hit and the film too was a big draw for the audience who used to return again and again.

Similar situation happened during the making of Jaal 1951 song 'Yeh raat ye Chandni'.' He transformed its Ghazal mood giving it a regular stressed beat. When he sang the tune to Sahir Ludhianvi, Sahir laughed. Sahir suggested that it should be sung by Talat but Sachin Da wanted Hemant Kumar.Even when the song was recorded by Hemant Kumar, Guru Dutt wanted to re-dub the song in Rafi Sahib’s voice. Dada stuck on to his choice and the song was a very big hit.

From 1930 to 1936, over these five to six years, he composed music fusing Indian classical music and folk music, which did not resemble anybody else’s. ”Listen to this Bengali song Mono Dukkhe Mori re Shubol (1934), composed and sung by him. This song is a Kirtan which used to be sung in semi-classical style but Sachin Da throws the words in the Bangal dialect that makes it more rural to the roots. The dialect is of East Bengal with some Sanskrit words used. Such songs are sung by boatmen from that part of the world.

Mono Dukkhe Mori re Shubol (1934)

His innovative tendency were visible as early as in 1934 during a Bengal Music Conference in 1934, inaugurated by Rabindranath Tagore, Sachin Dev Burman was asked to sing after Ustad Faiyaz Khan. Ustad Faiyaz Khan had finished with ‘Jhan, jhan, jhan…’, a song that spellbound the audience. Sachin Da began with the same song in Bangla, ‘Jhan, jhan, jhan – manjira baaje’. The audience roared in unison and Karta extended the song to last more than half an hour. Sukla Devi vividly remembers how Ustad Faiyaz Khan came to the stage and hugged Sachin Da. The same tune he used in the Buzdil(1951) song sung by Lata and asked Shailendra to keep same mukhda with a slight change in words. Listen to both version

Jhan jhan jhan manjira baje..S D Burman

jhan jhan jhan manjira baje by Lata from Buzdil 1951

One of the most marvelous experiments that Sachinda carried out was in the song O nighahen mastana (Paying Guest -1957). Young Kishore’s voice, supported by Asha Bhosle’s humming and alaap throughout the song, adds tremendous charm to the song. The unique thing about this song is that when the second antara gets over, the interlude music and the lights start fading out till the music can be hardly heard. While the remaining lights dim out, the third antara is sung in a softer tone.It is one of the most romantic songs ever created by any music director.

In another Navketan production Kala Pani, in  the song Hum bekhudi mein tum ko pukare chale gaye. He used the rhythm of a ghazal in the mukhda and geet in the antara. This song was originally sung by Dada himself in Bengali, every body wanted Dada to sing this in hindi but he felt that rafi's voice  will suit well to Dev Anand in this situation.one finds Rafi’s soothing voice with only a few instruments used by Dada – Sarangi, tabla, gunghroo, khadtal and harmonium.

SHAKEEL BADAYUNI- Lo Aa Gai Unki Yaad

He was a great lyricist of the Golden Era of Bollywood. That was the time when most of the poets were writing about the downtrodden sections of society, their upliftment, the betterment of society, and depressive songs. But Shakeel had an altogether different taste – his poetry was romantic and close to the heart.

in his first film, he wrote the song Afsana Likh Rahi Hoon. sung by Uma Devi(TunTun), became immortal, In the 1949 film Dulari, he wrote 'Suhani Raat Dhal Chuki'.He was the lyricist of many immortal songs 'Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya' , 'Chaudvin Ka Chand Ho Ya Aftab Ho', Husnwale Tera Jawab Nahin' (Gharana), 'Kahin Deep Jale Kahin Dil' (Bees Saal Baad), or 'Mere Mehboob Tujhe Meri Mohabbat Ki Kasam'

Shakeel shared a close friendship with Naushad, he and Naushad became one of the most sought-after composer/lyricist duos in the industry. Among the scores they churned out together, are those of Deedar (1951), Baiju Bawra (1952), Mother India (1957), and Mughal-e-Azam (1960), that stand out. Other films they scored together include Dulari (1949), Shabab (1954), Ganga Jamuna (1961), and Mere Mehboob (1963)He also collaborated with Hemant Kumar and Ravi to give us many memorable songs.

The Songs of Anand Bakshi since the Begining of his Career( 1956 -1965)

Anand Bakshi (21 July 1930-30 March 2002) was fond of writing poetry since his youth, but he did this mostly as a private hobby. He worked in Army but left it to join Hindi Film Industry as a writer or a singer but not a lyricist. He got his break writing songs in a film titled Bhalaa Aadmi (1958), acted by Bhagwan Dada. He wrote four songs in this film. His first song in this film was "Dharti Ke Laal Na Kar Itna Malaal" which was recorded on 9 Nov 1956. (In his own voice on All India Radio interview).

Anand Bakshi thought at that time that now his career has started but it was not like that, he had to struggle further. He was given one or two songs in the films like Miss Toofan Mail, Sun To Le Haseena(1958), CID Girl, Laal Nishaan(1959) but he got noticed from the 1962 film 'Kala Samundar' Qawwali  “Meri Taveer Le Ke Kya Karoge”. Plus the films ‘Mehndi Lagi Mere Haath’ His first super hit song was 'Mere Mehboob Kayamat Hogi' from Mr X in Bombay, the first time he worked with Laxmikant Pyarelal.

In 1963, he again noticed with  Mukesh solo – “Chaand Aaahen Bharega” from the film ‘Phool Baney Angaare’,  “Tumhen Husn De Ke Khuda Ne Sitamgar Banaaya Banaaya”. from the film – ‘Jab Se Tumhen Dekha Hai’,

His real career as a lyricist started from the movie 'Jab Jab Phul Khile'. One of those songs 'Ek tha gul ek thi bulbul..' became very popular. This year another film 'Himalaya Ki God Mein' had 4 super hit songs in his name. Apart from these two films  ‘Lutera’, ‘Shriman Funtoosh’ and ‘Teesra Kaun’ had memorable songs. Notable mentions required though, for “Hamen Kya Jo Har Su Ujaale Huye Hain” from ‘Namaste Ji’ and “Ye Dard Bhara Afsaana” from ‘Shriman Funtoosh’. And yes – “Pyaar Ka Fasaana Bana Le Dil Deewaana” from ‘Teesra Kaun’.
