Raj Kumar- A Towering Personality of the Golden Era

Raaj Kumar stood out for his unique manner of acting and dialogue delivery His screen presence was such that whenever he appeared with any hero, he will overshadow the person present in the frame. Most of the established heroes of that era avoided working with him.

He achieved prominence with his brief role as the husband of Nargis in Mother India.in 1957, He was paired with Dilip Kumar in Paigham(1959), he played Dilip Kumar's elder brother who is a mill worker and loyal to the owner of the mill. In a small role, he overshadowed Dilip Kumar who was an established actor at that time. He was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for that film.

He was cast with Rajendra Kumar in Dil Ek Mandir(1963), Raaj Kumar played the role of a cancer patient for which he won the Filmfare Award in the Best supporting actor category. He appeared in Godaan in the same year, gave a memorable performance.

He became known for his distinct style of dialogue delivery with the release of Waqt(1965). After this film, he was the most saleable actor. His other notable films included Hamraaz (1967), Heer Raanjha (1971), Maryada (1971), Lal Patthar (1971), and Pakeezah (1972).

After a period of flops in the late 1970s and early 1980s, he had notable successes as a supporting actor in Kudrat (1981), Ek Nai Paheli (1984), Marte Dam Tak (1987), Muqaddar Ka Faisla (1987), and Jung Baaz (1989). In 1991, he reunited with fellow veteran actor Dilip Kumar after 32 years in Subhash Ghai's Saudagar. His last hit film was the 1992 film Tirangaa and his final film was 1995's God & Gun.

50 Years of Heer Ranjha

This legendary tale of love, written in the 16th century by Warris Shah in poetry. Chetan Anand chose to make this film in that form only. He selected the great poet of that time Kaifi Azmi. He created lines not only for the leads, played by Raaj Kumar and Priya Rajvansh but for the rest of the ensemble cast which included  PranPrithviraj KapoorAjitJayant, etc.
A unique film told in verse, written by Kaifi Azmi and directed by Chetan Anand. Poetry on celluloid never attempted before and after. The film has immortal music by Madan Mohan, another beauty of the film was its photography.inspired by the paintings of Sobha Singh, a legendary painter from Punjab, the imagery of the film is wonderful. thanks to the cinematic genius of cinematographer Jal Mistry.
Told in a Romeo and Juliet style, the story concerns relative differences that rip apart childhood darlings Heer and Deedho, so Heer goes away to exist an unspecified life as a laborer.

Priya Rajvansh and Raaj Kumar both gave good performances in their respective parts as the title characters Heer and Raanja, Beside them, there are fine performances to be had from Pran, Ajit and Prithviraj Kapoor in their respective parts as Chhote Chaudhary, Saida, and the King.

The film released on 19th June 1970 was a moderate success in the Box office.
The film  starts with an introductory Nazm by Kaifi Azmi, recited by Films Director "Chetan Anand :
"Dard Punjab ke seene se chura laya Hun Chand tukde tere waris ke utha laya hun Aag meri na sahi iska dhuan mera hai Heer Ranjha ki kahani hai bayan mera hai ....
Chetan Anand screen-tested Zeenat Aman for a supporting role in the film. But during the audition, Zeenat's Urdu was very terrible. Chetan ended up not signing Zeenat. It was the first time that Chetan Anand worked with Raj Kumar, who was known for his dialogue delivery

Every parent wants their children to walk on their footsteps and follow the legacy.Bollywood stars too want their children to make a career in acting and rule the industry the way they did.Bollywood is a piece of cake for star kids. Remembering RAJ KUMAR on his 90th Birth Anniversary

"Aapke paon dekhe, bahut haseen hai, inhe zameen par mat utariyega, maile ho jayenge."
Who is not well aware of this dialogue? Delivered by the veteran actor Raaj Kumar who reigned the Indian film industry as long as he was around. He was known for delivering dialogues prefixed with a "Jaani".

The real name was Kulbhushan Kharbanda, was born on 8th October 1926 at Baluchistan Pakistan. He was a Kashmiri Pandit,he could read and write Urdu,he had strong language skills. He was a Police Sub-Inspector in Bombay before he joined films. As per his son  once he went to watch a film at Metro cinema. There veteran filmmaker Sohrab Modi saw him and offered him a film. But he declined it. He eventually did Nausherwan-E-Adil (1957) with him. Later, he went on to do films like Mother India, Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayi and Dil Ek Mandir (between 1957-1963).

His quintessential style emerged after Waqt (1965) and he came into his own with Kaajal, Humraaz and Neel Kamal in the late 60s. It was often said that he didn’t suit the romantic category. But look at him in Heer Raanjha, Lal Patthar and Pakeezah (early 70s). How much more romantic can you get? Personally, I liked him in Karmyogi, Bulandi, Police Public and Saudagar (between 1978- 1991).His first film was Rangeeli released in 1952

He married Jennifer, an Anglo-Indian, whom he met on a flight where she was the airhostess. She later changed her name to Gayatri per Hindu customs. They had three children, sons Puru Raajkumar (a Bollywood actor), Panini Raajkumar and daughter Vastavikta Raajkumar, all the three tried their luck separately in fims but couldn't get success.

From his screen debut in Rangili in 1952 to his last film God & Gun in 1995, he played memorable characters in 60-odd films. He died of throat cancer at the age of 69 on 3 July 1996
