50 Years of Sawan Bhadon


Released on 12th June 1970, Sawan Bhadon was the debut film of Rekha and Navin Nischal. It was also the debut film of the famous villain Ranjeet. Dancer Jayshree T also came into limelight with this film. The film was produced and directed by Mohan Segal. 
The film was a surprise hit. Sawan Bhadon celebrated a jubilee run in over 30 theaters across the country
It had a few catchy numbers like "Kaan Mein Jhumka, Chaal MeinThumka" was very popular among masses. The music was composed by Sonik Omi, not a big name in the music industry at that time, only Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya (1966) was their earlier film was noticeable.
Sawan Bhadon was a run-of-the-mill film. Sawan Bhadon is the tale of Vikram played by Navin Nischal, a wealthy guy who’s been living in Europe when he decides to return to India. He has a step-sister Dolly and step-mother Sulochana, who are very cunning and greedy and steal Vikram's money during his absence from India. 
Vikram, on his way home, is blocked by some thugs, who are actually the men hired by Sulochana's brother to kill him. But a village girl Chanda(Rekha) and her friends help him. Both of them fall in love with each other and plan to marry with Chanda's family's consent. But Sulochana is against the marriage and tries to force Vikram to leave her, but Vikram does not obey her. 

Vikram comes to know that behind his back, Sulochana has fraudulently acquired properties of the villagers and he decides to return them to their rightful owners. Sulochana decides to kill him with the help of Madan by planting a bomb in his car before he heads towards Bangalore. The car explodes as per her plan and everyone including Chanda believes that Vikram is dead. All enemies of Vikram celebrate his death but Vikram survives.

Vikram returns home but Sulochana does not believe that he is alive. She tries to prove by all means that he is not Vikram. But Vikram proves that he has escaped merely with some injuries. Sulochana decides to kill the Vikram look-alike by poisoning his milk but he survives again
In the end, she confesses that she saw him falling out and burning from the exploded car and had bashed his head. The Vikram look-alike then admits that he is not Vikram, but CID Inspector Vinod.

Chanda is very disappointed about Vinod acting as Vikram, but Vinod tells her Vikram is not dead really but survived with injuries.
This film lifted the career of Jayshree T, who had 3 songs in the film. Ranjeet became a villain and of course Rekha and Navin Nischal.

Rekha - A Rare Blend of Beauty and Talent


Almost completing 50 years in Bollywood, Rekha when came to Bollywood, was 16years old,  a dusky, obese with a 33-inch waist. No one that time could believe that one day she will become a glamour icon of Bollywood.
On the premiere of Sawan Bhadon in 1970,  Shashi Kapoor uttered in disbelief, "How is this dark, plump and gauche actress ever going to make it?" But as the film released to the public, she became a hit and called the Sex Bomb. Sawan Bhadon was released in 1970 and celebrated a jubilee run in 34 centers across the country including Chennai. And Rekha signed 18 films in a week.
She appeared in several commercially successful films at the time, including Rampur Ka Lakshman (1972) opposite Randhir  Kapoor, Kahani Kismat Ki (1973) opposite Dharmendra, Namak Haram opposite Rajesh Khanna and Pran Jaye Par Vachan Na Jaye (1974) opposite Sunil Dutt, yet she was not regarded for her acting abilities. 
Rekha ( Born on10th Oct 1954) appeared as a child (credited as Baby Bhanurekha) in the Telugu film Rangula Ratnam (1966)..Her first signed Hindi film was Anjana Safar. but Sawan Bhadon released first. Despite the success of the film, she was often scorned for her looks. She subsequently got several offers but nothing of substance, as her roles were mostly just of a glamour girl.
Rekha recalls that the way she was perceived at that time motivated her to change her appearance and improve her choice of roles: "I was called the ‘Ugly Duckling’ of Hindi films because of my dark complexion and South Indian features. I used to feel deeply hurt when people compared me with the leading heroines of the time and said I was no match for them. I was determined to make it big on sheer merit.
It was in 1974 Rekha began her lifelong obsession with her mirror. Slowly picking up the tricks of make-up, she lost weight and became svelte Rekha got a meaty role for the first time in Dulal Guha's Do Anjaane (1976), her first film opposite Amitabh Bachchan. She made people sit up with her performance as an ambitious wife who sacrifices love at the altar of ambition. The audience was floored when there was a swift change in her screen personality, as well as her style of acting.
In 1978, with her portrayal of a rape victim in the movie Ghar. a turning point came in her career. The film was considered her first notable milestone, and her performance was applauded by both critics and cine-goers. She received her first nomination for Best Actress at the Filmfare Awards.
In that same year, she attained fame with Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, in which she co-starred once again with Amitabh Bachchan. The movie was the biggest hit of that year, as well as one of the biggest hits of the decade, and Rekha was set as one of the most successful actresses of these times.
In 1980, Rekha appeared in the comedy Khubsoorat, directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, with whom she had developed a strong father-daughter bond during their previous collaborations. In a role written especially for her, she won her first Best Actress award. for this film.
 In 1981, she starred in Umrao JaanHer portrayal is considered to be one of her career-best performances, and she was awarded the National Film Award for Best Actress for it. Now Rekha was no loger a glamourous item but was being approached for challenging roles.
Rekha starred in Ramesh Talwar's family drama Baseraa, which saw her playing a woman who marries her sister's husband after the latter loses her mental balance. She appeared as Sadhna in the commercially successful Ek Hi Bhool (1981), opposite Jeetendra, playing the role of a betrayed wife who leaves her husband. In 1982, she received another Filmfare nomination for Jeevan Dhaara, in which she played a young unmarried woman who is the sole breadwinner of her extended family. In 1983, she took the supporting role of a lawyer in Mujhe Insaaf Chahiye, garnering another Filmfare nomination in the Supporting Actress category.
Shyam Benegal took her in Kalyug (1981), Govind Nihalani's in Vijeta (1982), Girish Karnad's Utsav (1984) and Gulzar's Ijaazat (1987), were few of her films where her performance was appreciated. Apart from parallel cinema, Rekha took on other increasingly serious, even adventurous roles; she was among the early actresses to play lead roles in heroine-oriented films, one such film being Khoon Bhari Maang in 1988. She won her second Filmfare Award for her performance in the film. 
In the 90s most of the actresses of her generation, like Hema Malini and Raakhee, who succumbed to playing character parts, typically of mothers and aunts, Rekha was still playing leading roles at a time when younger female stars rose to fame. Rekha retained success with her starring role as Namrata Singh, a young woman who joins the police force to avenge her husband's death in K. C. Bokadia's Phool Bane Angaray (1991). The film was a box-office hit and Rekha received a Best Actress nomination at Filmfare for her work.
In 1996 she did,  her first negative role as Madam Maya, a vicious gangster woman running a secret business of illegal wrestling matches in the US, who, during the course of the film, romances the much younger Akshay Kumar. Her portrayal earned her several awards, including the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress and the Star Screen Award for Best Villain in Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi.
In the 2000s, Rekha appeared in relatively few movies. In Rakesh Roshan's science-fiction film Koi... Mil Gaya, Rekha played Sonia Mehra, a single mother to a developmentally disabled young man, played by Hrithik Roshan. The movie was a financial and critical success and became the most popular film of the year; Rekha received another Best Supporting Actress nomination at the Filmfare for her performance, 
From the giggling village belle in Saawan Bhadon to one of the country's reigning actresses, Rekha has come a long way. A  Well, known critic Omar Qureshi once said, "the term diva (in India) was coined for Rekha".

Rekha -The Much Maligned and Misunderstood Woman.


 Rekha who epitomises grace and lasting beauty was born on 10th Oct 1954. She was the “illegitimate” and unacknowledged daughter of the polygamous Tamil film star Gemini Ganesan. She was unrelentingly teased in school as a “lotta”, Tamil for the bastard. Such cruelty was to be her fate for years to come. Rekha revealed her secrets in her autobiography released in 2016.
At a shoot for the film Anjana Safar, which later renamed as Do Shikari, producer Kuljeet Pal, director Raja Nawathe and lead actor Biswajeet conspired to force Rekha into a kissing scene. This kiss had never been mentioned to her...The director didn’t call “cut” for five long minutes. Unit members were whistling and cheering. Her eyes were tightly shut but they were full of tears. Rekha couldn’t protest for fear of the consequences...
In this Blog I am bringing some revelations on the life and loves of Rekha, in her words, as told to Khalid Mohamed in her autobiography. Rekha-The Untold Story.

Rekha started her career in 1966 as a child actress in the Telugu film Rangula Ratnam, though her film debut as a lead happened four years later with Sawan Bhadon. Her first Hindi film was Anjana Safar but this film couldn't release.
She had no interest in acting and was basically forced to work to sustain her family financially, this was a difficult period in her life. Still, a teenager, acclimatising herself to her new surroundings was an uneasy process. Coming from the South, she did not speak Hindi and struggled to communicate with co-workers, and was constantly missing her mother, who was critically ill.
Rekha recalls  "I was called the ‘Ugly Duckling’ of Hindi films because of my dark complexion and South Indian features. I used to feel deeply hurt when people compared me with the leading heroines of the time and said I was no match for them. I was determined to make it big on sheer merit. In fact, when Navin Nischol found out that Rekha had been signed as his co-star for Sawan Bhadon, he complained to the producer: “From where did you pick out this namoona [character]? Itni kaali-kalooti [So dark and ugly]!”.
She appeared in several commercially successful films at the time, including Raampur Ka Lakshman (1972), Kahani Kismat Ki (1973), and Pran Jaye Par Vachan Na Jaye (1974), yet she was not regarded for her acting abilities.

Rekha transformed her body and started paying attention to her make-up, dress sense, and worked to improve her acting technique and perfect her Hindi-language skills. To lose weight, she followed a nutritious diet, led a regular, disciplined life, and practised yoga, later recording albums to promote physical fitness.
She began choosing her film roles with more care; her first performance-oriented role came in 1976 when she played Amitabh Bachchan's ambitious and greedy wife in Do Anjaane. The audience was floored when there was a swift change in her screen personality, as well as her style of acting.

Her most significant turning point, however, came in 1978, with her portrayal of a rape victim in the movie Ghar. She played the role of Aarti, a newly married woman who gets gravely traumatised after being gang-raped. The film follows her character's struggle and recuperation with the help of her loving husband, played by Vinod Mehra. The film was considered her first notable milestone, and her performance was applauded by both critics and audiences.

In that same year, she attained fame with Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, in which she co-starred once again with Amitabh Bachchan. The movie was the biggest hit of that year, as well as one of the biggest hits of the decade, and Rekha was set as one of the most successful actresses of these times. The film opened to a positive critical reception, and Rekha's performance as a courtesan named Zohra, noted for a "smouldering intensity", earned her a Best Supporting Actress nomination at the Filmfare.
In 1980, Rekha appeared in the comedy Khubsoorat, directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, with whom she had developed a strong father-daughter bond during their previous collaborations. It won the Filmfare Award for Best Film and Rekha won her first Best Actress award.
In 1981, she starred in Umrao Jaan, a film adaptation of the Urdu novel Umrao Jaan Ada (1905), written by Mirza Hadi Ruswa. Rekha played the title role of a courtesan and poet from 19th century Lucknow Her portrayal is considered to be one of her career-best performances, and she was awarded the National Film Award for Best Actress for it.
Rekha has acted in over 180 films in her career spanning over 50 years. She has won three Filmfare Awards, two for Best Actress and one for Best Supporting Actress, for her roles in Khubsoorat (1980), Khoon Bhari Maang (1988) and Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi (1996), respectively. Her portrayal of a classical courtesan in Umrao Jaan (1981) won her the National Film Award for Best Actress.

Earlier in her career, she was very bold, Rekha’s sexual openness, too, was revolutionary, even by modern standards, and won her yet more ire. It is impossible to imagine a young starlet today saying some of the things Rekha said four decades ago: “You can’t come close, really close, to a man without making love”, “It is a sheer fluke that I have never got pregnant so far” and “Premarital sex is very natural. And all those prudes who say that a single woman should have sex only on her suhaag raat are talking bull”!

Rekha had multiple linkups but none beside her at the age of 64. One of the first prominent affairs of Rekha in Bollywood was with the superstar Jeetendra. Jeetendra was known for his casual flirting with his female co-stars. Both Rekha and Jeetendra had done in numerous films with each other. It is said that Rekha was quite serious about him but the superstar was already married to Shobha Kapoor when he had met Rekha. When rumours about their alleged dating started doing rounds, Rekha was termed as a 'home-breaker' by many. Thus, their relationship died a bitter death. 

Her next affair was with Kiran Kumar but it was a short fling. Kiran was also Vinod Mehra’s best friend, whom she had fallen for later. Their relationship went on for a small time before they decided to call it quits.

Next was Vinod Mehra. There was a rumour that they married at a secret wedding ceremony but it did not last long. Rekha however, had denied having any marital relationships with Vinod Mehra in an interview with Simi Garewal in 2004.

Rekha’s affair with Amitabh Bachchan is the most talked about romantic relationship that has ever brewed in Bollywood.

Rekha married Delhi-based business tycoon, Mukesh Agarwal. According to the book, Rekha: The Untold Story, Mukesh was suffering from acute chronic depression and was not at all happy with Rekha’s acting career. To add to that, was their post-divorce trauma. All this led to Mukesh Agarwal’s suicide.

Rekha on her book says I do not invite people into my house. By hook or by crook, those who must find their way in. In fact, my privacy’s worked better than any screenplay. Anything connected with my work, the producers meet me in my office, no one comes into my house except family.

10 unsuccessful Love Stories of Bollywood Stars


Time and again, we hear about the love affairs among Bollywood stars. While some go on to tie the knot, many end up with broken hearts.We have seen our favorite stars fall in love (sometimes outside their marriage), Unfortunately they did not end up marrying each other.Starting from the famous Trio of Golden Era of Bollywood to the recent Hritik and Kangana Breakup.These Love affairs and gossips rarely die, especially in Bollywood at least.
Here are 10 such Tragic Love Stories of our Bollywood stars, witnessed over the years, that ended on a sad note.

Dev Anand and Suraiya-  The First &  Great love story of Bollywood was Dev Suraiya;s Love story .Suraiya  was already a superstar when Dev entered the industry. Suraiya traveled in American sedans. Her entourage reflected a regal aura. It included several servants and members of her family. Dev was fascinated by Suraiya. He would keep complimenting her. Later, the admiration grew mutual. Suraiya, too, showered praises on Dev. The two did seven films together — Vidya (1948), Jeet (1949), Shair (1949), Afsar(1950), Nili (1950), Do Sitare (1951) and Sanam (1951). Till their first three films no one suspected a romance between them. However, after 1951, Suraiya’s orthodox family members started dictating her life. It was during the shooting of Afsar that their romance became public and the opposition to their relationship became much more intense.According to Dev, their romance was at its zenith when they were paired in lead role for Afsar (1950). The music for this film was composed by S.D. Burman. The soulful "Man-mor hua matwala, yeh kisne jadoo dala, re yeh kisne jadoo dala" is among Suraiya’s best. While shooting for the movie, their affair became a hot topic for the Bombay tabloids.The villain of their Love Story was Suraiya's Grandmother.She used to visit studio during the shooting, once she disrupted the shooting of a love sequence.She went to the extent of not allowing them to shoot even innocent love scenes like kissing on the eyelashes.

Whenever Dev came to visit Suraiya at her apartment, he found his detractors already sitting in the drawing room. For Dev, this torture was becoming unbearable. Suraiya was so much hurt by her family’s uncalled for interference and stubbornness that her acting and singing career started taking a nosedive from 1951 onward. It was the religion that was coming in between their story. Suraiya’s grandmother Badshah Begum threatened to end her life if Suraiya tied the knot with Dev Anand, who belonged to a different faith. Many people say the old lady had a covert reason for opposing Suraiya and Dev Anand’s marriage, the fact that Suraiya was the highest earning member of the large family. The relationship could not culminate into a wedlock, and Suraiya and Anand worked for one last time with the film Do Sitare in 1951. It is said after the completion of the film, the two met at Suriaya’s apartment, in presence of Anand’s elder brother Chetan Anand one last time. The doleful lovers sobbed throughout their last conversation, and later Suraiya threw Anand’s proposal ring into the sea. It was a sad end of a sweet love story, and needless to say the pair was shattered. The sweet dream of Suraiya and Dev Anand’s marriage was sent to it’s end.Dev Anand moved on after this but Suraiya remained Unmarried till death.




Madhubala And Dilip Kumar-Dilip Kumar and Madhubala worked in 4 films,the first movie they did together was Tarana in 1951.Madhubala, who was to appear in Jwar Bhata, in which Dilip Kumar was playing the lead role. She was unable to work in the movie but this was the moment the youngster first set eyes on Dilip Kumar.

Madhubala and Dilip Kumar met seven years later on the sets of Tarana when she was eighteen years old. During the shooting she sent her hairdresser with a note written in Urdu together with a red rose asking him to accept it if he loved her, which intrigued and amused Dilip Kumar and naturally he accepted the rose.Their next film was Sangdil(1952)  During this time Madhubala had an intimate relationship with Dilip. In fact it was widely believed that the stunning pair would eventually get married by this time the two were involved in an intimate relationship. The early fifties were Madhubala's best years. She was rapturously and ecstatically in love and exuded happiness..Dilip Kumar in his Biography said "She, as I said earlier, was very sprightly and vivacious and, as such, she could draw me out of my shyness and reticence effortlessly. She filled a void that was crying out to be filled - not by an intellectually sharp woman but a spirited woman whose liveliness and charm were the ideal panacea for the wound that was taking its own time to heal".


When Mughal e Azam started,they were in love but during the making their affair broke down,as we all know that the film took 10 years to complete.The reason of their break up was Madhubala's father.
 Ataullah Khan who didn't want Madhubala to marry Dilip Kumar.In his Biography recently released Dilip Kumar wrote that the reason of their break up was Madhubala's father who actually wanted to make a film with him but Dilip refused.This hurt his ego so he made a point how Madhubala marry Dilip Kumar. Madhubala was very obedient daughter couldn't go against the wish of her father.The couple though did carry on their affair in this manner for a few years. The stress and inability to have a proper relationship took their toll and finally in 1957 they finally broke up. They never paired together after their break up, in fact both were in Naya Daur but due to her father  Madhubala opted out from that film.Ataullah sued, and BR Chopra counter sued. Eventually the whole fiasco was dragged into court. At some point in the trial the personal relationship between Dilip Kumar and Madhubala was put down as evidence, and their whole affair was put under the spotlight. 




Raj Kapoor and Nargis-Raj Kapoor was the original showman of Bollywood and Nargis Dutt was the beautiful talented actress who had carved a niche for herself in Bollywood. The romance between the two was meant to be. They were named as first couple of Bollywood.Raj Kapoor, with whom Nargis worked in as many as 16 films, six of which were RK banner productions, was undoubtedly the first love of her life. She was only 19 when Raj Kapoor came to her life.If it hadn't been Raj, it would have been someone else; he just happened to be her first boyfriend.

Raj Kapoor and Nargis met for the first time during the making of the film Andaz in the year 1949. It is said that Kapoor fell for Nargis the moment he saw her, and that marked the beginning of a partnership that spanned 16 films. Nargis became a common fixture in almost all of Kapoor’s films in the 1950s, since she was equally smitten by Kapoor and thus would give a nod right away to any of his films.Raj Kapoor was already married that time,she did not mind marrying him and playing second fiddle in his life. She even consulted several leading legal experts of that era to find some means to tie the knot to a married man. Raj Kapoor never wanted to marry her being already father of three children that time.By the mid-1950s, Kapoor had made this point to Nargis, and the film Chori Chori in 1956 was the last one they did together. Nargis is said to have slipped into depression after this revelation but soon got out when she fell in love with Sunil Dutt during the making of Mother India. with whom she tied the knot in 1958. It is said that Raj Kapoor was so dejected on hearing the news of Sunil and Nargis’ marriage that he locked himself in his room, and cried for hours together.



Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman-Guru Dutt was a successful director, producer and actor, he introduced Waheeda Rehman to bollywood through C.I.D released in 1956.Guru Dutt was already married to singer Geeta Roy when he fell in love for Waheeda Rehman.It was during the making of Pyaasa Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman came together.Different versions of the love affair suggest that it was Waheeda who initiated marriage proposals to Dutt, or that Geeta’s suspicious nature that made Dutt confide in Waheeda.Both of them worked together in 6 films.Some say that Kagaz Ke Phool (1959) was on the real life of both the actors.The last film they did together was Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam(1962).

There is a book"Memories Of Guru Dutt by Abrar Alvi which  tells the inside story behind the Guru Dutt-Waheeda Rehman romance as it is. One really feels sorry for the legendary actress on realizing how callow she was in understanding the crooked ways of Bollywood. Guru was indeed torn between the love for his wife and the other woman. However, he couldn’t  take a stand and ended up dropping Waheeda Rehman from his life. Abrar claims that Waheeda considered him her elder brother and describes the events that led to the ‘nikah’ of Guru Dutt and Waheeda that never happened. We come to know that Waheeda had a brother-in-law Rauf who announced that Guru Dutt was converting to Islam to marry her. Eventually, Guru Dutt chickened out at the last moment without realizing that his marriage with Geeta Dutt was long over. In the end, it seems that he caused Waheeda such a grievous hurt from which only work and more work could provide solace to the talented actress-cum-dancer. Clearly, ditching Waheeda.
 Geeta Dutt left Guru Dutt in despair, which drove him towards complete isolation. Things worsened so much that both Guru and Geeta took to heavy drinking, and finally Guru Dutt died in 1964.




Rajesh Khanna and Anju Mahendru- This love story started well before Rajesh Khanna became super star.Anju Mahendru was the first love of India's first superstar Rajesh Khanna. Both were struggling to find a foothold in the industry when they met each other some time in the 60's. Anju was an aspiring model and actor while Rajesh Khanna was selected by the United  Film Producer's Association as a hero. In the early days of their relationship, Anju supported his dreams like a devoted girlfriend. Rajesh too cared for her and reportedly lavished his affection and earnings upon her. Once the actor became super successful he charmed and convinced Anju into putting aside her career for him. The madly-in-love starlet obliged and soon became Rajesh Khanna's official girlfriend and the two of them shared a live-in relationship for close to seven years. Rajesh Khanna became the heart-throb of millions after the release of Aradhana in 1969.Even after that their relationship continued but  cracks started appearing in their relationship.Their clashing values and opinions led to many altercations. In one of her interviews, Anju stated, "He is a very orthodox man, yet somehow, is always attracted to ultra-modern girls. Confusion was a part of our relationship. If I wore a skirt, he'd snap, why don't you wear a sari? If I wore a sari, he'd say, why are you trying to project a Bhartiya nari look?"
