With the song of Malhar(1951) "Bade Armano Se Rakkha Hai Balam Teri Kasam", the underrated lyricist of Bollywood became Indeewar. His original name was Shyam Lal Babu Rai. He made his debut as a lyricist from the 1946 film Double Face as 'Azad'. This was his name in the literary circle. With this name, he wrote many songs for films from 1946 to 1951.

He wrote over a thousand songs in over 300 films in a career spanning over four decades, he gave us many immortal songs like 'Zindagi ka Safar' (Safar),' Koi jab Tumhara Hriday Tod De (Purab Aur Paschim), 'Kasme Waade Pyar Wafa' (Upkaar), Hothon Se Chhoo lo tum (Prem Geet) and also the song like ' Aap Jaisa Koi Meri Zindagi Mein' (Kurbani)

He worked with various film composers but his association with Kalyanji Anandji produced many great songs such as 'Chandan Sa Badan' (Sarswati Chandra, 1968),  'Zindagi Ka Safar Hai Yeh Kaisa Safar' (Safar, 1970), 'Dil Aisa Kisi Ne Mera Toda' (Amanush, 1975), and 'Dushman Na Kare' (Akhir Kyon, 1985).

50 Years of Gambler

In the 70s Dev Anand was launching new faces, picking himself to play lead roles against actresses half his age. This film too had Zaheeda, the niece of actress Nargis as his heroine. Though Zaheeda first appeared in Prem Pujari, she was not his heroine. To compensate for that role, she was taken as his heroine for this film. Same was with Shatrughan Sinha who was introduced by Dev Anand in a very small role, was given a parallel role in this film. This film was released on 19th Feb 1971 after the grand success of Johny Mera Naam

The film opened with mad euphoria of Dev Anand, all the shows were full all over India for a few weeks. Though the film did Jubilee but was not a great hit. . It was Dev Anand who carried the movie. He was at his best in the courtroom scenes with Sahu in splendid form as the public prosecutor.  Shatrughan Sinha, still trying to establish himself, came up with a nice cameo of a gangster having a change of heart.

The movie, however, fell far below the standards that Dev Anand had set during the first two decades of his career but his fans still love his role as Raja.  the man who is taught how to gamble while playing cards, but whose life takes a turn when he finds himself accused of murder. Jeevan is decent in his supporting role as Master, the criminal who cheats whilst participating in cards in order to win the cash.

The music of the film was composed by S D Burman It had 5 tracks and all of them were popular.

Overall, Gambler was an enjoyable thriller, thanks to the very good and central performance from Dev Anand, along with the excellent direction, script, technical aspects and tense atmosphere

Her first big role as an actress, not a child artiste, came with Anokha Pyar (1948) where she starred with A-list co-stars in Dilip Kumar and Nargis.  She became a top star with her performances opposite Ashok Kumar in Samadhi and Sangram in 1950. Basant Songs of Bollywood

Today on the occasion of Basant Panchmi, I write this blog to worship the Goddess Saraswati,  the Hindu goddess of knowledge, music, art, speech, wisdom, and learning. One of the most famous festivals associated with Goddess Saraswati is the Hindu festival of Vasant Panchami.  On this day, Goddess Saraswati is worshipped in schools, colleges, educational institutes as well as in institutes associated with music and dance.

The first film on this season was released in 1942 'Basant' starring Mumtaz Shanti and Ulhas. Madhubala also acted in this film as a child artist( Baby Mumtaz).  It was major box office success and the highest-grossing film of 1942. Fourteen years later another film 'Basant Bahar' was released, starring Bharat Bhushan and Nimmi. The highlight of this film was its music, scored by Shankar Jaikishan.

Basant is also called Rituraj, the king of all seasons and in Urdu is called Jashn-E-Baharaan or in short Bahaar. Many lyricists have used 'Bahaar' for this season. Let's look into a few of these songs. The first song I have selected from the 1942 film Basant
