50 Years of Jawani Diwani

Jawani Diwani was released on 14th July 1972, It was a musical romance film directed by Narender Bedi, and starring Randhir Kapoor, and Jaya Bhaduri, A landmark movie primarily because of RD Burman's fast, pounding and melodious score. The movie was a hit despite the unusual and forgettable pairing of Randhir and Jaya.Bhaduri.

It was an era when music was the dominating element and enlisting Rahul Dev Burman for the job ensured half the battle was won After Hare Rama Hare Krishna it was once again Asha Bhosle was at her best combined with Kishore Kumar.

In so far the plot is concerned, this is the simple story of a boy (Randhir Kapoor) meeting girl (Jaya Badhuri) at school, with the usual problems with parents.  The plot does not appeal but the music lingers.

Songs from “Jawani Diwani” impressed the youth and a cross-section of music lovers. “Yeh Jawani Hai Diwani” was a peppy number and went down well with the young brigade. “Saamne Yeh Kaun Aaya” could be heard at most parties. “Nahi Nahi Abhi Nahi” and “Agar Saaz Chheda Tarane Banenge” became popular too but the icing on the cake was “Jaane Jaan Dhoondta Phir Raha” which had a distinct RD touch, a unique blend of instruments that only he could use.

If you have not seen this film, you must see, enjoy its music and picturization of its songs

50 Years of Kati Patang

Kati Patang was released on 29th Jan 1951.By that time Rajesh Khanna was the Super Star of Bollywood. All of his films were making Jubilees  The Rajesh Khanna phenomenon was at its peak. This was the third picture of Shakti Samanta and Rajesh Khanna together and the second film of the trio of Shakti Samanta, Rajesh Khanna and R D Burman.

The film was tragic in nature with a non-glamorous heroine role but became hit because of its music. The film gave us evergreen hits like Yeh Shaam Mastani, Pyar Diwana Hota Hai and Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai. all sung by Kishore Kumar. One song 'Jis Gali Me Tera Ghar Na Ho Sajna' was sung by Mukesh.

The film was based on the novel by Gulshan Nanda, the 1971 film features the story of the double life of Madhavi, played by Asha Parekh, who got her first Filmfare Award of the Best Heroine for this role.

Sharmila Tagore who was a favourite heroine of Shakti Samanta did not get this role because she was pregnant at that time. Asha Parekh who had earlier worked with Samanta was the natural choice for this film.  He had cast her in his earlier film,  Pagla Kahin Ka.

Rajesh Khanna and Asha Parekh had already been paired in a few films like Aan Milo Sajna,  their pairing was also acceptable to the audience.  This film too was a hit and was  the sixth highest-earning Bollywood film of 1971

Salman Khan- Deprived of Filmfare Best Actor Awards

Salman Khan( 27 Dec 1965), who made his debut with a minor role in Biwi Ho To Aisi (1988) but has been in the business for more than 32 years now, he has been nominated nine times for Filmfare Award for Best Actor; that’s right, NINE times, but has never won one.

Before him, Dharmendra was another popular Hero who never got the Filmfare Best Actor Award despite nominated for 6 times. It was in 1997 he was given the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award for contribution to Hindi Cinema. Now let's look into the films for which Salman Khan was nominated.

Maine Pyar Kiya (1989)-

It was Salman's first film as a hero but couldn't get the best debut award being already made his debut earlier in Biwi Ho To Aisi. He was nominated for Best Actor along with Aamir Khan for Raakh, Rishi Kapoor for Chandini, Anil Kapoor for Eshwar, and Jackie Shroff for Parinda. Jackie Shroff, who took home the Black Lady for Parinda

Karan Arjun (1995)-

Salman was nominated once again for the prestigious award along with Aamir Khan for Rangeela, Govinda for Coolie No 1, Ajay Devgan for Naajayaz, and the award went to Shahrukh Khan for DDLJ.

Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya (1998)-

He was nominated for the third time for this film but lost out to Shah Rukh Khan, who won the Best Actor award for Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. The other nomination was Aamir Khan for Ghulam, Ajay Devgan for Zakhm and Govinda for Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan.

Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam(1999)-

This was his fourth nomination for this film. Ajay Devgan was also nominated for this film, Aamir Khan for Sarfarosh, Manoj Vajpayee for Shool and Sanjay Dutt got the award for Vaastav.

Tere Naam(2003)-

The role that Khan played in this romantic tragedy was very different from his earlier films. He was nominated for this role along with Shahrukh Khan for Kal Ho Na Ho, Amitabh Bachchan for Baghban, Ajay Devgan for Ganga Jal and the award went to Hritik Roshan for Koi Mil Gaya.

Dabangg (2010)-

Everyone was expecting him the award this time but once again he lost the award to Shahrukh Khan (for playing Rizwan Khan in My Name Is Khan). Other nominees were Hritik Roshan for Guzarish, Ajay Devgan for Once Upon A Time In Mumbai

Bodyguard(2011)-

Along with him, Shahrukh Khan for Don2, Ajay Devgan for Singham, Hritik for Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, but the award was taken by Ranbir Kapoor for Rockstar

Dabangg-2 (2012)-

Three consecutive nominations must have given Khan enough joy to compensate for the fact that he again lost it to Ranbir Kapoor, who won the award for playing the deaf and mute lover boy in Barfi!

Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015)-

This is considered to be one of the best movies that Khan has done in his career, he was nominated but once again deprived of the award this time too. The award went to Ranvir Singh for Bajirao Mastani. The other nomination was Amitabh Bachchan for Piku

Bollywood Hit Songs, Picturized on Unknown Actors

Hindi Films are known for their songs. Sometimes it happens that a very melodious song is either badly picturized or on relatively unknown actors. In this blog, I have selected a few of such songs that were very popular at that time and are still hummed but we have forgotten on whom these were picturized

The first song I have taken is 'Suhani Raat Dhal Chuki' from the 1949 film Dulari. This song established Mohammad Rafi, it was picturized on Suresh, who went to Pakistan and acted in two films in 1950 and 1951, but then returned to India soon after. By that time  Dilip Kumar. Dev Anand and Raj Kapoor captured the top slot.
