S D Burman's Love and Hate for Lata

Lataji and Burman Da have done some splendid works and have created marvelous songs.Despite their brief tiff, that had stirred up a huge controversy at the time, both legends got back to working together again after 5 years from 1958 to 1962.These five years SD Burman was none the worse as he continued to give some of the greatest music of his career, now with Geeta Dutt and Asha Bhosle, but he realized he had something beyond, where only Lata Mangeshkar could reach. She also felt that there was something unique in Dada’s music, without which she would remain incomplete.

Lata Mangeshkar was his ultimate choice. He often said, “Give me a harmonium, give me Lata and I will make music”.
Lata’s first song for S D Burman was probably in Mashal (1950)

Aankhon se door door hain par dil ke paas jo

.The very next year came Naujawan starring Nalini Jaywant and Premnath, the song Thandi hawayein lahraa ke aayein became Super Hit,it remains one of the Lata's immortal song.Same year came Sazaa starring Dev Anand Nimmi and the song "Tum Na Jaane Kis Jahan Mei Kho Gaye" became immortal.

It is said that S D Burman called Lata on phone and requested her to sing a song for his son's first film Chhote Nawab in 1961 which she agreed, later R D Burman mediated between both and removed the misunderstanding between them then S D Burman gave her a song in Dr Vidya  1962,their first song after patch up was ‘Pawan diwani’

Tale of Two Melody Queens

With the many ups and downs, the Mangeshkar sisters have been together in their professional and personal lives. There have been many stories about their rivalries. Lata is the eldest of the three sisters who entered the film industry first. She began singing at mere 14 years of age to support her family after her father died. Being the eldest one, she expected the same seriousness from her younger sister Asha.

Asha as she is, the rule breaker, had craved a different path for herself. 16-year-old Asha eloped with a man named Mr. Ganpatrao Bhosle, who was 31 years old then. In one of her interviews Asha accepted that Lata did not approve of her marriage, “At one time, the relationship was very adversarial and there have been periods of non-communication.”
The professional differences started trickling in when Asha started pursuing a career in playback.Asha Bhosle  made her Hindi film debut when she sang the song "Saawan Aaya" for Hansraj Behl's Chunariya (1948).Her first solo Hindi film song was for the movie Raat Ki Raani (1949).That time Lata esteblished herself with the other great female playback singers like  Geeta Dutt, and Shamshad Begum. Asha used to get the assignments these three singers  refused to sing. Her earliest songs were composed by A R QureshiSajjad Hussain, and Ghulam Mohammed, and most of these songs failed to do well.In 1952 Singing in Sangdil (1952), composed by Sajjad Hussain, she got reasonable recognition. Raj Kapoor signed her to sing "Nanhe Munne Bachche" with Mohammed Rafi  in Boot Polish (1954), which gained popularity. O. P. Nayyar gave Asha a break in CID (1956).but she first achieved success in B. R. Chopra's Naya Daur (1957), composed by him. Her duets with Rafi like "Maang Ke Saath Tumhara", "Saathi Haath Badhana" and "Uden Jab Jab Zulfein Teri", penned by Sahir Ludhianvi, earned her recognition. It was the first time she sang all the songs for a film's leading actress.

From 1957 to 1962  Sachin Dev Burman and his favorite singer, Lata Mangeshkar, were not on good terms. During this period, S D Burman used Asha as his lead female voice. She and Burman gave many hit songs in movies such as Kaala PaniKaala BazaarInsaan Jaag UthaLajwantiSujata and Teen Deviyaan (1965). They recorded many songs together after 1962 as well. Most famous of these songs were Asha's duets with Mohammed Rafi and Kishore Kumar. The song "Ab Ke Baras" in Bimal Roy's Bandini (1963) consolidated her position as a lead singer. The seductive song "Raat Akeli Hai" from Jewel Thief (1967), picturised on Tanuja, became very popular.

Lata and Asha Duets-Their first duet was for the film Daaman 1951.

LATA MANGESHKAR-The Voice for every major leading lady of Bollywood

As a teenager, she struggled to help support her family and to establish herself as a playback singer in the Hindi film industry of the 1940s, at a time when the profession was dominated by such divas as Shamshad Begum and Noor Jehan.
She represented every generation of Hindi cinema from Nargis and Waheeda Rehman to Madhuri Dixit and Kajol.
Mangeshkar was trained from age five by her father Dinanath Mangeshkar, a disciple of the Gwaliorgharana (a community of performers who share a distinctive musical style), and she was also tutored by maestros such as Aman Ali Khan Sahib and Amanat Khan.
Her first song as a playback singer in Hindi films was in 1947 - Aapki Sewa Mein (paa laagu kar jori...)but this song did not give lata recognition as a singer, Her first major break was in 1948-Majboor (Dil Mera Toda) given by Music Composer Ghulam Haider. After she recorded the hit “Uthaye ja unke sitam” in Andaz (1949), her destiny was sealed, the year 1949 was the turning point of a great career. The year saw the rise of Lata Mangeshkar The song Aayega Aane Wala from Mahal and the songs of Barsat came the same year. After that, she never looked back. She became the voice of all the Major Heroines. In an interview when asked who according to you enacted your songs really well onscreen?. She said that Actresses like SadhanaMeena KumariNargisMadhubala, and Kajol, took the effort to understand the song and act accordingly. Jaya Bachchan observed me well and got my mannerisms right - starting with how I stand, how I sing, and how I drape my sari. In Abhimaan (1973), she even chose to wear white saris like me. It was commendable.
From the 1940s to the 1970s, Mangeshkar sang duets with Asha BhosleSuraiyaUsha MangeshkarMohammed RafiKishore KumarMukeshManna DeyHemant Kumar, and Mahendra Kapoor. Balasubrahmanyam. Udit Narayan, Kumar Sanu, and Sonu Nigam
In the 2000s, Mangeshkar's duets were mainly with Udit Narayan and Sonu Nigam. 2005-06 were the years of her last well-known songs: "Kaise Piya Se" from Bewafa and "Shayad Yehi To Pyaar Hai" from Lucky: No Time For Love, with Adnan Sami and " Lukka Chhupi" in Rang De Basanti (2006 film) with A.R.Rahman. Remembering Madan Mohan on his 93rd Birth Anniversary

The man, who was acknowledged as a genius by people who understood and appreciated music, was never at the top rung in the hit parades or with the big banners or the big stars. He had very few Hit Films but His Music was always Hit. His first silver jubilee hit came 8 years later with "Woh Kaun Thi" in 1964.
Many tunes composed by him remained unused... many songs remained unreleased... some recorded but unreleased songs have now been released on the album TERE BAGAIR... while others have just been lost! Some unused tunes were used in Veer-Zaara, while various others remain well preserved with his family.
Madan Mohan composed music for 95 released Hindi films and 12 shelved films. These 100 plus films featured almost 700 songs, many of which are remembered to this day while some have been lost over the years. He was extremely versatile, but he is best remembered for his ghazals, pathos-laden songs and classical based songs
Madan Mohan was born on 25th June 1924.He spent the early years of his life in the Middle East. After 1932, his family returned to their home town of Chakwal, then in Jhelum district of Punjab, British India. In 1946, he joined the All India RadioLucknow as Programme Assistant, where he came in contact with various artists such as Ustad Faiyaz KhanUstad Ali Akbar KhanBegum Akhtar, and Talat Mahmood. During these days he would also compose music for programmes to be broadcast on All India Radio. In 1947, he was transferred to All India RadioDelhi where he worked for a short period.
He started his film career as a singer, In 1948, he got his first opportunity to sing a film duet Pinjare Mein Bulbul Bole and Mera Chhotasa Dil Dole with Lata Mangeshkar under composer Ghulam Haider (composer) for the film Shaheed (1948 film), though these songs were never released or used in the film. Between 1948 and 1949, he assisted music composers S.D. Burman for Do Bhai, and Shyam Sundar in Actress and Nirdosh.
He got  his first big break as composer with the film Aankhen  in 1950.His association with Lata ji though started as a singer before he became composer but the  long lasting collaboration with Lata Mangeshkar started with his 2nd film Adaa in 1951.Lata ji gave some of her best solo songs under his direction. In this Blog I have selected some the great songs of this duo.
