The story behind the song"Chahoonga Main Tujhe Saanj Savere"

The Filmfare Award in 1965 went to Dosti(1964) for five categories including three categories namely – music director, singer and lyricist gone to Dosti for the song Chahoonga main Tujhe Sanj Savere –The song was brilliantly rendered by Melody King Mohd. Rafi Saab and was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal and written by Majrooh Sultanpuri.
Laxmikant Pyarelal were the upcoming Music director Many of their earlier films were not successful at the Box Office only Parasmani was successful. Dosti was their first Super Hit film and the music was also super hit. The song Chahoonga main tujhe sanj savere tune was composed much earlier than any Parasmani song by the duo with Lata Mangeshkar in mind. They could not find a situation in their early films to use the song properly.
Originally the lines of the song written by Mazrooh were Chauhingi Mein Tujhe Saanjh Savere, Phir Bhi Kabhi Ab Naam Ko Tere, Awaz Mein Na Dungi.
Dosti was a small budget movie of Rajshri Films and getting Mohammad Rafi and Lata the Established singer was out of the budget for the composer but they thought of approaching Rafi to sing songs for Dosti.
They were very apprehensive when they drove to Rafi’s mansion early that day not knowing if the great singer would agree to sing for a low-budget movie and for such young, struggling music directors such as LP.
During the musical sitting of Dosti, Laxmikant sang this song out for Rafi at the very tail end of their session before departing Rafi’s house as a song they kept in their pocket as a reserve. Rafi was completely bowled over by the tune of Chahoonga  main tujhe , he agreed to sing songs for Dosti for the sake of singing this song. LP replied that there was no situation in the movie for this song. They did not want to use it. Rafi insisted persistently and said that he would sing all the songs for free if Chahoonga main tujhe was included in the film.  LP returned back and had to make the writer, producer, director re-write the story to include Chahoonga  main tujhe as a primary song in the film.
The movie was released and took India by storm in 1964. Rafi sang 5 solo songs in this film, all the songs were hit Rafi Saab had given his golden voice to many unknown actors, even in Dosti two boys played the part of friends were Sudhir Kumar and Sushil Kumar. All of the songs lip-synced by Sudhir Kumar (Mohan), the blind boy.  Even as a unique coincidence Dosti is the only movie in Hindi Cinema which made a record for the biggest hit without heroine.
Rafi Saab was honoured by the Government of India with the coveted Padmashri Award as well as National Film Award for the Best Male Playback Singer for this song “Chahooga main Tujhe“

The Great Trio of Mohammad Rafi, Dev Anand and S D Burman

Sachin Dev Burman had a great affinity for  Dev Anand; so much so that the former used to say that his middle name Dev was for his favourite star, Dev Anand. Similarly, Dada had a great liking for Rafi. They together gave incredible music to the industry.”As far as the trio together is concerned, some of their memorable songs are from Nau Do Gyarah(1957), Kala Pani (1958),   Bambai Ka Babu, Kala Bazar (1960), Tere Ghar Ke Samne (1963), Guide, Teen Deviyan (1965) and Jewel Thief 1967
Many would recall that Rafi started singing for SD Burman much earlier (1947 movie Do Bhai, for example, with the song: Duniya Mein Mere Aaj Andhera hi Andhera),  for Dev Anand Rafi sang in CID 1955  Aankho Hi Aankhon Mein Ishara ho Gaya. but when this combination came together it created history.
The first time Burman Da gave Mohammad Rafi a chance to give a voice to Dev Anand was Nau Do Gyarah, 1957 (written by Majrooh Sultanpuri), Aaja Panchhi Akela Hai, Soja Nindiya ki Bela Hai. How effortlessly now Rafi becomes the romantic voice of Dev Anand, as if declaring to earlier voices of Talat and Hemant that he had arrived.
Remember the songs from Kala Pani " Hum Bekhudi Mein " and "Achha ji main haari chalo maan jao na" ,  the great hits of this trio after that many hilt song were created. Here are a few of these great songs.

The Other Voices of Raj Kapoor

When you think of Raj Kapur, the name of Mukesh automatically comes in our mind as the voice of Raj Kapoor.  Raj was convinced that only the voice of Mukesh suited him, so in all the films that he produced or directed, he used to try using Mukesh for his songs. However,as a true Professional, if he were to work for some other producer or under a different Director, he followed the policy of strict Non-interference. So, in such films, we see other singers giving playback to Raj Kapoor, depending on the choice of the producer or director.
After Mukesh, Manna Dey was the alternate voice of Raj Kapoor. Remember the songs Pyaar hua ekraar huaYe raat bheegi bheegiA ja sanam madhur chandni mein hum and many more songs.Manna Dey later sang for Raj Kapur in Parvarish (Masti bhara hai sama), Dil Hi To Hai (Laga chunari mein daag), Mera Naam Joker (Ae bhai zara dekh ke chalo). It is creditable that all the Manna Dey songs, though few in number, acquired iconic status.
Mohammad Rafi also sang for Raj Kapoor. I have come across at least five films in which the songs on Raj Kapur are in the voice of Rafi. You will be surprised to know that in Andaz (1949) Mukesh sang for Dilip Kumar and Rafi sang for Raj Kapoor the duet Milnewale kahin ulfat mein juda hote hain. is one of them.Next film was Dastan released in 1950  in which Surraiya starred with Raj Kapoor the famous song Tara Ri Aara Ri  was sung by Rafi.
There was a film Amber (1952) starring Raj Kapur and Nargis music was given by Ghulam Mohammad  a beautiful duet with Lata, which would rank among the best of Ghulam Mohammad and the best of Rafi-Lata duets. The song is" Hum Tum Yeh Bahar" Another film was Paapi released in 1953 remember the song "tera kaam hai jalna parvane".There was a film  Do Ustaad (1959)starring Raj Kapur, Madhubala and Music by OP Nayyar "Dil Ka Makaan"

Kishore Kumar has also sung for Raj Kapur. The only film having this distinction is Pyar (1950), lyrics by Rajendra Krishna and composed by who else but SD Burman. Though there were many  songs of Kishore Kumar for Raj Kapoor in the film, only audio is available.

Mohammad Rafi-The Voice That Swayed Millions

Mohammed Rafi (24 December 1924 – 31 July 1980) had an immortal, melodious voice. He was trained in classical music and had an unparalleled range. Rafi conveyed different shades of emotions through his songs whether romantic, sad, classical, devotional, ghazals or bhajans. He could sing every kind of song with an ease and perfection that made him the uncrowned king of Indian playback singing.

He was born on December 24, 1924, and was fond of singing from childhood. As singing was not considered respectful in those days, he ran away from home to Lahore, where he got training under maestros such as Bade Gulam Ali Khan and Ustaad Abdul Waheed Khan. Rafi sang on All-India Radio before he entered the cinema. Sham Sunder was the first music director who recognized the artiste in Rafi and gave him a break in a Punjabi movie, Gulbloch, in which Rafi sang Soniye, Hiriye nee.

Mohammad Rafi's first big break came late in 1946. Shooting for a Dilip Kumar, Noorjehan starred blockbuster film Jugnu which was started in 1946.He sang a duet with Noorjehan"Yahan badla wafa ka be wafayi ke siwa kya hai"When the film was released in 1947, this very duet became the best selling song. This gave the necessary break to Mohammad Rafi and from then on he never looked back and went from strength to strength. He also acted in this film.

By the middle of 1947, Mohamad Rafi had become a household name in Hindi speaking North India. His flexible, sweet, and velvety voice suited most young actors including the brilliant rising star Dilip Kumar. Most of the finest music directors, spearheaded by the duo of Pandit Husnalal Bhagatram, were showing interest in grooming his raw talent further into the art of film playback singing.
Pandit Husnalal Bhagatram gave Mohammad Rafi an immortal song "Is Dil Ke Tukde Hazar Huye, Koi Yahan Gira koi Wahan Gira, Behte Huye Aansoo Ruk Na Sake koi Yahan Gira koi Wahan girl".Mohammad Rafi gave his emotion-filled voice to this song. This song became an instant hit.
In 1948 another song by Rafi "Watan ki raah mein watan ke naujwan shaheed ho" from Shaheed, which became the signature tune for the movie, became overnight a nationwide hit.
The music director Shyam Sunder's tunes rendered by Mohammad Rafi for film Bazaar(1949) including a duet with Lata Mangeshkar entitled "Apni nazar se door voh, unki nazar se door hum, tum hi batao kya Karen, majboor tum majboor hum" caught the imagination of entire Hindi knowing India.

Mohammad Rafi's utmost devotion to his profession and hard work under the music direction of Pandit Husnalal Bhagatram paid great dividends and he became India 's leading duet singer in the company of Lata Mangeshkar. Some of his pre-1950 duets with Lata Mangeshkar are acclaimed as some of the finest in the history of film singing.
After 1950 most of the great music directors of India considered Mohammad Rafi a force in film music. When Naushad composed his masterly tunes for films like Dulari (1949) and Deedar (1951), Mohammad Rafi became the star that no one could afford to ignore. Film Deedar song "Huye hum jin ke liye barbad became an all-time hit. Later on, his high pitched numbers sung for films, Amar and Baiju Bawra put him up at a very high pedestal. Mohammad Rafi was honest to the core, never greedy and success did not make him arrogant.

S D Burman also used Rafi's voice for Dev Anand and Guru Dutt beautifully.Rafi worked with Burman in 37 movies, including Pyaasa (1957), Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959), Kala BazarNau Do GyaranKala Pani , Tere Ghar Ke Samne (1963), Guide (1965), Aradhana (1969), and Abhimaan (1973).

Rafi's partnership with Shankar Jaikishan was among the most famous and successful in the Hindi film industry. Under Shankar-Jaikishan, Rafi produced some of his songs for actors like Shammi Kapoor and Rajendra Kumar. Out of six Filmfare awards, Rafi won three for S-J songs – "Teri Pyari Pyari Surat Ko", "Baharon Phool Barsao" and "Dil Ke Jharokhe Mein". The song "Yahoo! Chahe Koi Mujhe Junglee Kahe" was sung by Rafi, only to be matched a fast-paced orchestra and a composition by Shankar Jaikishan. S-J had Rafi give playback for Kishore Kumar in the film Shararat ("Ajab hai daastan teri yeh zindagi"). Rafi sang a total of 341 numbers (216 solo) for Shankar-Jaikishan. Among the films of this combination are Basant BaharProfessorJungleeSurajBrahmachariAn Evening in ParisDil Tera DeewanaYakeenPrinceLove in TokyoBeti BeteDil Ek MandirDil Apna Aur Preet ParaiGaban and Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai.
The composer duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal (L-P) patronized Rafi as one of their singers, right from their very first song by him from the film Parasmani (1963). Rafi and L-P won the Filmfare Awards for the song "Chahoonga Main Tujhe Saanjh Savere" from Dosti (1964). Rafi rendered the highest number of songs for the music director duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal: 369 numbers (186 solo) for L-P.
Rafi sang for many famous music directors during the 50s and 60s. He sang Naushad̢'s composition Man tarpat Hari darshan ko, with the same perfection he sang O.P. Nayyar's light composition Yeh hai Bombay meri jaan. He also sang S.D.
Rafi was truly a singer for the masses and not for any particular class. His voice appealed to all, the old, young, rich, poor, men and women.
Rafi brought cheers and smiles to millions of his fans through his songs. In his songs like Main zindagi ka saath nibhata chala gaya, Rafi tried to inspire the dejected and give hope to those who had lost faith in life and God. On July 31, 1980, a massive heart attack silenced this peerless singer forever. But his songs keep him alive.

The 11 Emotions of Mohammad Rafi

In Indian classical music, each raga is an inspired creation for a specific mood.In Hindi Film music Mohammad Rafi was a superb vocal artist and could bring a range of emotions into the limited time 3 to 4 minutes a song allowed him.As per Indian classical music there are 9 rasas or 9 major basic emotions/expressions.In music rasa is associated with the emotion of a Raga. There are now a total of 11 rasas and all of them go into the making of a good Bollywood masala flick! And guess what - Rafi Saab’s voice has given us a song for every emotion. So without much ado I give you the 11 emotions or Rasas of Rafi.

One element that is common among all performing arts is their ability to express the emotions which make up different slices of life. Rafi Saab’s voice has given us a song for every emotion.

Bhakti Rasa-Bhajans, Ghazals, Nagmas, Shairi and Sufi Sangeet are part of Bhakti Rasa. Bollywood has properly used these in its music.Mohammad Rafi sang many songs in this Rasa. Some of the popular are
Man Tadpat Hari Darshan ko Aaj
Insaaf ka Mandir hai yeh
Tere Dar pe aaya hoon kuchh kar ke jaaonga
Song from Baiju Bawra 1952

Vatsalya Rasa
vatsalya is linked to mother but in Bollywood Parental love  is emoted in many songs sung by male singers also. There are many songs sung by Rafi Saheb in this category
Babul ki duaayein leti ja (Neel Kamal)
O Nanhe se farishtey (Ek Phool Do Maali)
So ja baba mere so jaa” from Koshish
Song from Ek Phool Do Maali 1969

Shringara Rasa

This emotion can be used to paint love for any person, be it specifically sweetheart or anybody else. Rafi certainly was a master at expressing romance and the sheer number of his great romantic songs is a testament to that. Some of his popular shringar rasa songs are
Aaj ki raat yeh kaisi raat ke hum ko (Aman)
Aise toh na dekho” from Teen Deviyaan
Chaudvin Ka Chaand Ho
Mere Mehboob tujhe meri mohabbat (Mere Mehboob)
Song from Chaudhvin Ka Chaand 1960

 Karuna Rasa

The sympathy and fellow-feeling.The actual Karuna means the sadness,Karuṇarasa  refers to the “pathetic sentiment”There are many popular songs in this emotion
Kahan ja raha hai (Seema, 1955)
Main gaaoon tum so jaao” (Brahmchaari)
Chahunga main tujhe (Dosti)
Na tu Zameen ke liye (Dastaan)
Song from Dosti 1964

Hasya Rasa

Teasing and laughing with a friend is one face of “Hasya rasa”. Much has been said about Rafi and Johnny Walker  and their superb comedic partnership. But Rafi did great comedy for others too  like Mehmood and Om Prakash
Sar jo tera chakraye ya dil ( Pyasa )
Chhuri ban kaanta ban (Jaali Note, 1960)
Hamein kale hain to kya hua (Gumnaam)
Chakke pe Chakka (Brahmchaari)
Song from Jaali Note, 1960

Roudra Rasa

Raudra Rasa is one of the important rasa in Natyashastra and the dominant emotion or the Sthayi Bhava in this rasa is Krodha or anger. Rafi was especially adept at expressing anger, his voice could slip into the high notes and quick enunciation of the angry man, with extraordinary control and with such great effect. The songs depicting anger where Rafi excelled in this emotion
O Duniya ke rakhwaale (Baiju Bawra)
Mere dushman tu meri dosti ko tarse (Aye din bahar ke)
Yeh mahalon yeh takthon yeh taajon ki duniya(Pyasa)
Yeh Duniya ye mehfil mere kaam ki nahin (Heer Ranjha)

Song from Aye din bahar ke 1966

Vibhatsya Rasa

The bhava it represents is Disgust or aversion. This emotion is evoked by anything that is a symbol of repugnance, nausea  Rafi at its best to render  this rasa more effective
Yeh Duniya agar mil bhi jaye to kya hai(Pyasa)
Mere Dushman tu meri (Aaye din bahar ke).
Kya miliye aise logon se (Izzat)
Song from Pyaasa 1957

Bhayanak Rasa

The Sthayi Bhava of Bhayanaka rasa is Bhaya or fright. The outcome of Bhayanaka rasa is through the Vibhavas or determinants such as Vikrta Rava or terrific noise, Rafi Saab brings this rasa effortlessly in the following songs which shows sheer disgust and antipathy towards the atrocities of the society
Guzre hain aaj ishq main us maqam se (Dil Diya Dard liya)
Mili khaak main mohabbat (Chaudvin ka Chand)
Dono ne kiya tha pyar magar (Mahua)
Main apne aap se ghabra gaya hoon (Bindiya)
Song from Bindiya 1960

Veera Rasa

it deals with the exhibition of energy and enthusiasm with persons of high rank. Most of the patriotic songs are in this Rasa.Rafi’s voice quickens with the strength of his emotions and how heroic and sad the high notes sound in veer rasa.
Kar chale hum fida jan-o-tan saathiyo(Haqeeqat)
Apni Azaadi ko hum hargiz mita sakte nahin(Leader)
Zindabad aye Mohabbat zindabad (Mughal-E-Azam)
Mere desh premiyo aapas main prem karo (Desh Premi
Song from Leader 1964

Adbhuta Rasa

It is about the sentiment of wonderment surprise. The Sthayi bhava of the rasa is Vismaya or astonishment. Rafi has many songs in this Rasa. While most if us are lost in the wonder of his voice, Rafi could be vocally lost in the wonder of discovery in other ways – as this song highlights. "Tumne mujhe dekha hokar meherbaan" (you looked kindly on me) – you can hear the joy and the wonder of a man who, contrary to his expectations, finds himself loved by his beloved.Tumne mujhe dekha (Teesri Manzil, 1966
Yeh duniya patang nit badley yeh rang koi jaane na udaane waala kaun hai”
Maine poocha chand se (Abdullah)
Wadiyan mera daaman, raaste meri bahaen(Abhilasha)
Song from Teesri Manzil, 1966

Shaanta Rasa

Beyond all these emotions lies the emotion of peace and serenity.Shantha Rasa represents complete harmony among mind, body and the universe. This is a state where the mind is in rest, a state of tranquility. One of my all time favourite songs is “Tere Mere Sapne” from Guide. When Rafi Saab says “Tere dukh ab mere, mere sukh ab teretere yeh do naina chand aur suraj mere”, he sounds so utterly reassuring and comforting
.Basti basti parvat parvat (Railway Platform, 1955)
Main Zindagi ka saath Nibhata (Hum Dono)
Tere Mere Sapne (Guide)
Song from Guide, 1965
