Remembering AMITABH BACHCHAN on his 74th Birthday

Happy Birthday AMITABH BACHCHAN-The Undisputed SHAHENSHAH of Bollywood

There are actors, there are stars, and superstars… And there is only one Amitabh Bachchan.
India has had several successful thespians and insanely popular stars - but nobody who has stayed the course for so long, and towered over the rest as he has (albeit intermittently) for much of his 47-year-long innings.
With his brilliant acting skills and his ability to deliver blockbusters after blockbuster, Bachchan is set for long haul, his recent immortal performance in PINK is an indicator.

Amitabh Bachchan was born on 11th Oct 1942 at Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, His father Harivansh Rai Srivastava (Bachchan) was a well-known Hindi poet and his mother Teji Bachchan was a Punjabi Sikh from Lyallpur (now Faisalabad), Punjab.Initially he was given a name Inqlab by his father  inspired by the phrase Inquilab Zindabad popularly used during the Indian independence struggle. However, at the suggestion of fellow poet Sumitranandan Pant, Harivansh Rai changed the boy's name to Amitabh, which means "the light that will never die.

Amitabh did his schooling from Sherwood College Nainital and did graduation from Kirori Mal College Delhi. After that he went to Calcutta for a job.
Young Amitabh with his mother

.His first job was with Shaw Wallace and he later worked as a freight broker for the shipping firm Bird and Co. But considerations of livelihood and a regular pay at the end of the month was no compensation for what the heart desired. By 1968, young Amit had decided to give it all up, He decided to move to bombay to try his luck in Hindi Film industry.
Bombay did not embrace its biggest creation to be with open arms.He was rejected by many for his unconventional looks and great height.Every filmmaker that he approached thought he was too tall at 6 feet 3 inches.
In desperation Amitabh tried to use the one other unique characteristic that he had, his deep baritone. But here too, Bachchan failed. He was rejected by the All India Radio after an audition test. But one fine day he was invited by Mrinal Sen to give his voice in his National Award winning film Bhuwan Shomein 1969.So Amitabh made his debut as a voive narrator. After that his first film Saat Hindustani came.

In 1971 his 6 films were released and in only Anand he got noticed and appreciated, he was given Filmfare Award for best Supporting Actor.
In 1972 his 8 films released, only Bombay To Goa was an average in box office while all other films flopped.

In 1973, Bachchan played the role of Inspector Vijay Khanna in Prakash Mehra's action film Zanjeer. He has since appeared in several films with the character name "Vijay". The same year, he appeared in Abhimaan and Namak Haraam. For the latter, he received the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting ActorIn 1974 came Kasauti,Benaam,Roti kapda Aur makaan and majboor, all these films were successfull.

The year 1975 came with his 2 Blockbuster Films Sholay and Deewar, since then he has become an un disputed king of Bollywood.Every year till 1986 his one or two films were the top grosser of that year.
On 26 July 1982, while filming Coolie,in the University Campus in Bangalore, Bachchan suffered a near fatal intestinal injury during the filming of a fight scene with co-actorPuneet Issar.. He required an emergency splenectomyand remained critically ill in hospital for many months, at times close to death. The public response included prayers in temples and offers to sacrifice limbs to save him, while later, there were long queues of well-wishing fans outside the hospital where he was admitted.

In 1984, Bachchan took a break from acting and briefly entered politics in support of long-time family friend, Rajiv Gandhi. He contested Allahabad's seat of 8th Lok Sabhaagainst H. N. Bahuguna, former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and won by one of the highest victory margins in general election history (68.2% of the vote). His political career, however, was short-lived: he resigned after three years, calling politics a cesspool. The resignation followed the implication of Bachchan and his brother in the "Bofors scandal" by a newspaper, which he vowed to take to court. Bachchan was eventually found not guilty of involvement in the ordeal.

In 1988, Bachchan returned to films, playing the title role in Shahenshah, which was a box office success. After the success of his comeback film however, his star power began to wane as all of his subsequent films like JaadugarToofan and Main Azaad Hoon (all released in 1989) failed at the box office. The 1991 hit film, Hum, for which he won his third Filmfare Best Actor Award, looked like it might reverse the trend, but this momentum was short-lived.despite the lack of hits, it was during this era that Bachchan won his first National Film Award for Best Actor for his performance as a Mafia don in the 1990 film Agneepath. These years would see his last on-screen appearances for some time. After the release of Khuda Gawah in 1992, Bachchan went into semi-retirement for five years.
In 1997, Bachchan attempted to make his acting comeback with the film Mrityudata, produced by ABCL. Though Mrityudaata attempted to reprise Bachchan's earlier success as an action hero, the film was a failure both financially and critically. ABCL was the main sponsor of the 1996 Miss World beauty pageantBangalore but lost millions. The fiasco and the consequent legal battles surrounding ABCL and various entities after the event, coupled with the fact that ABCL was reported to have overpaid most of its top level managers, eventually led to its financial and operational collapse in 1997. The company went into administration and was later declared a failed company by Indian Industries board

In 2000, Bachchan hosted the first season of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC), the Indian adaptation of the British television game show, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?. The show was well received..In the same year he also appeared in Yash Chopra's box-office hit, Mohabbatein, directed by Aditya Chopra. He played a stern, older figure that rivalled the character of Shahrukh Khan. His role won him his third Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award. Other hits followed, with Bachchan appearing as an older family patriarch in Ek Rishtaa: The Bond of Love (2001), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... (2001) andBaghban (2003). As an actor, he continued to perform in a range of characters, receiving critical praise for his performances in Aks(2001), Aankhen (2002), Khakee (2004) and Dev (2004). His performance in Aks won him his first Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor. One project that did particularly well for Bachchan was Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Black (2005). The film starred Bachchan as an ageing teacher of a deaf-blind girl and followed their relationship. His performance was unanimously praised by critics and audiences and won him his second National Film Award for Best Actor, his fourth Filmfare Best Actor Award and his second Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor. Taking advantage of this resurgence, Amitabh began endorsing a variety of products and services, appearing in many television and billboard advertisements. In 2005 and 2006, he starred with his son Abhishek in the hit films Bunty Aur Babli (2005), the Godfathertribute Sarkar (2005), and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006). All of them were successful at the box office. His later releases in 2006 and early 2007 were Baabul (2006),Ekalavya and Nishabd (2007), which failed to do well at the box office but his performances in each of them were praised by critics.

In 2009 his film PAA released  It won him his third National Film Award for Best Actor and fifth Filmfare Best Actor Award. In 2010,
In 2013 he made his Hollywood debut in The Great Gatsby making a special appearance opposite Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire. In 2014, he played the role of the friendly ghost in the sequel Bhoothnath Returns. The next year, he played the role of a grumpy father suffering from chronic constipation in Piku. It won him his fourth National Film Award for Best Actor and his third Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor.

This year 2016 one of his memorable performance film PINK released on September, the film not only hit but will be remembered for the Powerful Performance of Amitabh Bachchan. His histrionics come primarily in the form of his well-modulated baritone, conveying his emotions and of course, from the well-written lines.
Amitabh Bachchan is known for his deep, baritone voice. He has been a narrator, a playback singer, and presenter for numerous programmes.Renowned film director Satyajit Ray was so impressed with Bachchan's voice that he decided to use Bachchan as the narrator in his 1977 filmShatranj Ke Khilari (The Chess Players).Bachchan lent his voice as a narrator to the 2001 movie Lagaan which was a super hit. In 2005, Bachchan lent his voice to the Oscar-winning French documentary March of the Penguins, directed by Luc Jacquet
The Government of India awarded him with the Padma Shri in 1984, the Padma Bhushan in 2001 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2015.
Amitabh Bachchan Sports Complex in Allahbad managed by UP Sports Directorate is named after him. Also a road is named after him as Amitabh Bachhan Road in his home town, Allahabad.

There is a temple in Kolkata, where Amitabh is worshipped as a God.The tiles of the temple are adorned with words Jai Shri Amitabh; in place of the idol, you see his photo and a pair of white shoes that the actor wore in his movie, Agneepath

Happy Birthday REKHA

Rekha the Untold Story

Rekha who epitomises grace and lasting beauty was once  bold and fiercely outspoken. She made frank and provocative statements to the press about pre-marital sex being natural and abstinence until one’s wedding night being unnecessary.
At her very first shooting schedule, in the late 1960s, Rekha fell victim to the machinations of the film’s director, producer and lead actor. They coerced her into a kissing scene, with the film’s unit members salaciously catcalling, whistling and cheering. Those lascivious voices were said to have echoed in her mind till much later.

Rekha fell in love several times — with Jeetendra, Vinod Mehra and Kiran Kumar, among others — but each relationship was fated to end the same way. The men in Rekha’s life could not stand up for a woman who had an ‘illegitimate’ past (her father never married her mother). She was left heartbroken each time, even publicly humiliated.

In the mid-70s, Rekha was said to be in love with Amitabh Bachchan, and the screen sparkled with their chemistry, and there seemed to be hope on the horizon for Rekha. Film magazines of the time bubbled over with stories of their alleged romance.

Rekha married a Delhi Businessman Mukesh Agarwal in early 1990.Decision to marry him in a spur -of-the-moment — the priest was woken up in the dead of night to officiate — Rekha found herself in a new ‘Basera’ (home), which was the name of her husband’s farmhouse in south Delhi.
In October 1990, just seven months after their wedding, Agarwal committed suicide by hanging, apparently using Rekha’s dupatta. On that tragic day, Rekha was in the U.S. for a stage show. Agarwal’s sister-in-law spoke with Rekha over the phone and consoled her, saying that the Agarwal family stood by her.
After that incident Rekha became a recluse. She minimised her interactions with the outside world. She gave fewer interviews, and even in those, one saw a significantly toned-down Rekha. She no longer made sensational statements; rather she was melancholic, almost philosophical. The Rekha we know today is the woman who slowly and painstakingly rebuilt her life and image from that day onwards. That tumultuous phase of her life completely transformed her.
Rekha As Child

Rekha's real name was Bhanurekha She was a love child of actress Pushpavalli and Tamil movie star Gemini Ganesan, It is said that her parents did not tie wedding knots. Infact, people are of the say that, when Rekha was born, her father didn't even make the declaration of his paternity. She was born on 10th Oct 1952 at Madras.
Rekha as child artist in Rangula Ratnam 1966

Rekha made her first public appearance as a child artist in the Telugu film Rangula Ratnam (1966). Goadalli CID 999, a Kannada film was her first film in which she played the lead role of heroine. She worked in a number of Telugu, Kannada and Hindi films. Her Hindi film Sawan Bhadon was a major hit in the box office. This film brought her stardom overnight. After that, she was offered plenty of roles, but most of the roles demanded her to be portrayed as a glamour girl.
Rekha in Sawan Bhadon 1970

Rekha has acted in over 180 films in a career spanning over 40 years. Throughout her career, she has often played strong female characters and, apart from mainstream cinema, appeared in Art films, known in India as parallel cinema. She has won three Filmfare Awards, two for Best Actress and one for Best Supporting Actress, for her roles in Khubsoorat (1980), Khoon Bhari Maang (1988) and Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi (1996), respectively. Her portrayal of a classical courtesan in Umrao Jaan (1981) won her the National Film Award for Best Actress

Though her career has gone through certain periods of decline, she has reinvented herself numerous times and has been credited for her ability to sustain her status. In 2010, she was honoured with the Padma Shri by the Government of India.Rekha has also been nominated as a Rajya Sabha member.

In 2014 she also worked in Super Nani released on Diwali (24 October). Super Nani was a family drama, in which the grandmother (Rekha) is unappreciated by her children and husband, Randhir Kapoor. Her grandson, Sharman Joshi convinces her to change. The grandmother 'transforms' herself into a glamorous model.
In 2015, she appeared in R. Balki's Shamitabh, where she played herself.

Hum to mohabbat karega

Padhe Likhe Kuchh Khaas Nahin Par Naam Hai Mr Y (Mall Road) (1962)
The song seems to be simply a fun time pass song, with the words describing the past times of a small time pickpocket and trickster of sorts. The words tell of one Mr Y, who spends his time on the Mall Road, and describe what he does there. The star cast is led by Chandrashekhar and Sangeeta.  Only Audio is available
A light hearted song, and a fun to listen to types. Essentially, Rafi Sb.,lyrics by S.R.Saaz,music by Jamal Sen.

Ho Aa Ja Aa Ja Rabba Ishqe Di Khol Guthiaan  from Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom)
The screen presence  of this man is amazing. There is an aura about him that continues to draw the audiences. The measure of his success and popularity is pretty much sustained, as his fans continue to return to the cinema/video time after time after time. I believe that the secret behind this sustenance has been his capacity to re-invent himself, and his portrayals.Yes I am talking about Amitabh Bachchan, this is a brief guest appearance for Amitabh.  His attire tells us that he is a funky Roman gypsy, introducing the convolutions of love through the title song of the film.  This song plays as the initial credits are rolling on the screen.  The lyrics of this song are by Gulzar, and the music is by trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy.  The singing voice is that of Shankar Mahadevan.

Ho Aa Ja Aa Ja Rabba Ishqe Di Khol Guthiaan

Remembering RAJ KUMAR on his 90th Birth Anniversary

"Aapke paon dekhe, bahut haseen hai, inhe zameen par mat utariyega, maile ho jayenge."
Who is not well aware of this dialogue? Delivered by the veteran actor Raaj Kumar who reigned the Indian film industry as long as he was around. He was known for delivering dialogues prefixed with a "Jaani".

The real name was Kulbhushan Kharbanda, was born on 8th October 1926 at Baluchistan Pakistan. He was a Kashmiri Pandit,he could read and write Urdu,he had strong language skills. He was a Police Sub-Inspector in Bombay before he joined films. As per his son  once he went to watch a film at Metro cinema. There veteran filmmaker Sohrab Modi saw him and offered him a film. But he declined it. He eventually did Nausherwan-E-Adil (1957) with him. Later, he went on to do films like Mother India, Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayi and Dil Ek Mandir (between 1957-1963).

His quintessential style emerged after Waqt (1965) and he came into his own with Kaajal, Humraaz and Neel Kamal in the late 60s. It was often said that he didn’t suit the romantic category. But look at him in Heer Raanjha, Lal Patthar and Pakeezah (early 70s). How much more romantic can you get? Personally, I liked him in Karmyogi, Bulandi, Police Public and Saudagar (between 1978- 1991).His first film was Rangeeli released in 1952

He married Jennifer, an Anglo-Indian, whom he met on a flight where she was the airhostess. She later changed her name to Gayatri per Hindu customs. They had three children, sons Puru Raajkumar (a Bollywood actor), Panini Raajkumar and daughter Vastavikta Raajkumar, all the three tried their luck separately in fims but couldn't get success.

From his screen debut in Rangili in 1952 to his last film God & Gun in 1995, he played memorable characters in 60-odd films. He died of throat cancer at the age of 69 on 3 July 1996

A Tribute to BEGUM AKHTAR on her 102nd Birth Anniversary

Akhtaribai popularly known as Begum Akhtar was born on 7th Oct 1914 at  Bada Darwaza, Town Bhadarsa, Bharatkund, District Faizabad U P.Infact she was born as Bibbi along with Zohra as twin daughters to Mushtari and Ashgar Hussain Her family belonged to the upper class of the society and was not even inclined towards music. She showed interest in music at a very young age and was sent to train under the great sarangi player, Ustad Imdad Khan. Later, she learnt classical music from great exponents of this field like Mohammad Khan, Abdul Waheed Khan and Ustad Jhande Khan Saheb.
Toone but e harjaayi kuchh aisi adaa paayi(Begam Akhtar NFS)(1930)

She gave her first public performance.when she was only 15 years old.People were moved by her voice and she gained instant recognition. Her first recording was done by the Megaphone Record Company and they released many gramophone records with her melodious Ghazals, thumris, dadras, etc. In 1930's,

Begum Akhtar was very beautiful and her sensitive voice made her an ideal candidate for a film career in her early years.
Those days only those actors were chosen who can sing also .Begum Akhtar was also aproached by many people from bombay to work in films. So she acted in a few Hindi films She was signed by East India Film Company as a singing actor. Her first film was East India Film Company’s ‘Ek Din Ka Baadshah’ (1933). This was followed by ‘Nal Damyanti’ (1933), ‘Mumtaz Begum’ (1934), ‘Roop Kumari’ (1934), ‘Ameena’ (1934), ‘Jawani Ka Nasha’ (1935), ‘Naseeb Ka Chakkar’ (1936) etc.. In all these films, she sang all her songs herself.

WOH HANS RAHE  FROM ROTI 1942
Seeing her performance in these films  the renowned director Mehboob Khan approached her for a film titled "Roti". The music was composed by the famous Anil Biswas. The movie was released in the year 1942 in which Begum Akhtar had sung six Ghazals. Unfortunately, four of the Ghazals were deleted due to some tension between the producer and the director. The film was appreciated by one and all and the music took the industry by storm.
After her marriage with  barrister Ishtiaq Ahmed Abbasi in the year 1945.she could not sing for almost five years. But  In the year 1949, she returned to record at the Lucknow Radio station and sang three Ghazals and a Dadra. She felt so satisfied and happy that she wept with joy. She then continued to give public performances and sing in concerts till she passed away
Aye Ishq Mujhe Aur to Kuch Yaad

Begum Akhtar was persuaded by Madan Mohan, a famous music director to sing in two movies "Daana Paani" (1953) and "Ehsaan" (1954). The songs "Aye Ishq Mujhe Aur to Kuch Yaad" and "Hamein Dil Mein Basa Bhi Lo" were absolutely melodious and were liked by one and all. Her last movie stint was that of a classical singer in Satyajit Ray's film "Jalsa Ghar". Begum Akhtar was a refined Ghazal singer and was called as Mallika-e-Ghazal or the Queen of Ghazals.

Fasl e gul aayi hamen yaad teri phir aane lagi (Panna Dai)(1945)

Begum Akhtar performed last in a concert in Ahmedabad. That day she felt that her voice was not upto the mark and raised her pitch. This put much stress on her and her health deteriorated. The situation became critical and she had to be rushed to the hospital. She breathed her last on 30th October 1974, leaving many fans disappointed and heart broken.
Her tomb was built in a mango orchard within her home, ‘Pasanda Bagh’ in Thakurganj area, of Lucknow. She was buried alongside her mother, Mushtari Sahiba. Attempts are on to convert her home built in 1936 in China bazaar, Lucknow into a museum.
She received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for vocal music, and was awarded Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan(posthumously) by Govt. of India. She was given the title of Mallika-e-Ghazal (Queen of Ghazals).
Her taseer(soulful sound) was the result of years of “loneliness, pain, suppression and silence, she had the ability to sing the saddest song with a bright smile

.On the conclusion of  her 102 nd birth anniversary, I have selected one of her six songs from the film ‘Roti’ (1942), ‘Chaar Dinon Ki Jawaani’ . This song was written by Dr. Safdar ‘Aah’ Sitapuri and the music was given by Anil Biswas. The film was produced under the banner of National Studios and was directed by Mehboob.

‘Chaar Dinon Ki Jawaani

Meghraj Aaye Barkha Laye from Roti 1942

The Ghazal that gave Begum Akhtar name and fame was written by Behzad Lucknowi –deewaana banaana hai to deewaana banaa dethat she became famous as a ghazal singer. Interestingly, Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan accompanied her on Sarangi in this ghazal. This record not only cut a platinum disc, Megaphone Company had to set up a full fledged plant at Dum Dum to meet the unprecedented demand for this ghazal’s gramophone record

Begum Akhtar - diwana banana hai to

This song is from the Film Roti 1942 in which Begum Akhtar sang 6 songs but all the songs were removed from this film due to the contract she signed with the record company earlier not to sing for others.Later this song was released by the same company. All the songs were written by  Behzad Lucknowi, keeping Akhtaribai in his mind.I think he  was in love with Akhtaribai Faizabadi or with her singing .

Akhtari Bai Faizabadi's early years 6 Aye mohabbat tere anjam pe rona aaya

The ghazal is ‘mere hum-nafas mere hum-nawaa mujhe dost banke dagha na de’ written by Shakeel Badayuni. This ghazal was first issued by HMV on LP No.ECSD 2486 in 1971.This was composed by Khayyam

Mere ham nafas mujhe dost ban kar daga na de

Deewana Banana hai to

Jigar Moradabadi remained one of her favourite poets and she continued to sing his ghazals until her death in October 1974.The ghazal is ‘koi ye keh de gulshan gulshan’. Begum Akhtar had composed this ghazal and sang in concerts sometime in latter half of 30s, but it was recorded for HMV sometime in early 50s

Koi ye keh de gulshan gulshan

Here is this song which is sung and composed by Begam Akhtar. The lyrics are traditional and the lyricist is not known.
