A MUSICAL JOURNEY WITH DEV ANAND

When you talk of Dev Anand, music cannot be left behind. All his films had that in common - melodious songs that were  joyous and boisterous, soft and romantic.The charismatic, evergreen star of Bollywood had as much of romance in his style as swagger in his mannerisms.I being the admirer of him explore the different moods (flirtatious to romantic, playful or sad ) of Dev Anand in his songs..A unique collection of  Songs 

In this musical journey of Dev Anand S D Burman played a key role.His melodies and Lyrics of Sahir Ludhianvi and face of Dev Anand created euphoria in the 1950s and 60s.It was always said that Kishore was Burmanda’s first choice for Dev Anand but Mohammad Rafi with S D Burman gave many immortal songs for Dev Anand.It is an established truth that Rafi had a peerless skill to twist his voice according to the Hero, so he did perfectly for Dev Anand also emerging Dev’s image more romantic. Burmanda once agreed that he tried Talat, Manna Dey and Hemant Kumar for Dev Anand, but Rafi was perfect match for Dev Anand.
if you look back to the Golden Era of Hindi film music, you will find that other music directors kept Kishore away & preferred Rafi for Dev Anand.
 The begining of the journey started with Navketan’s first film "Afsar" in 1950.This film had two evergreen songs of Suraiya – “Man mor hua matwala” and “Nain diwane ek nahi mane”.The year 1951 saw the release of Baazi. It was Navketan Films’ first hit film. This film gave Bollywood its all-time great director Guru Dutt. It was Guru Dutt’s directorial debut. Music was again composed by S.D.Burman. It had some hit songs of Geeta Dutt viz. "Suno gajar kya gaye”, "Tadbeer se bigdi hui", "Aaj ki raat piya", "Tum bhi na bhulo balam" and a peppy number by Shamshaad Begum "Sharmaye kahe ghabraye kahe”.
Dev Anand’s second movie with Guru Dutt was Jaal(1952). It was also a box-office hit. It marked the rise of a stylish superstar. Jaal featured a beautiful solo by Lata Mangeshkar “Chori chori meri gaali ana hai bura”. Other memorable melodies from this film were “Yeh raat yeh chandani phir kahan”, a solo by Hemant Kumar and a duet with the same mukhda by Hemant Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar. 
In the year 1954 came Taxi Driver,It had a comic song “Chahe koi khush ho” by Kishore Kumar and a tragic song Talat Mehmood’s “Jaye to jaye kahan”.
Almost all films of Dev Anand are a treat for music lovers. All of them cannot be mentioned here. But Dev Anand will always be remembered for his style, his romantic image and the evergreen music from his films. In this blog I am taking songs of Dev Anand in different moods.

A TRIBUTE To SALIL DA on his 22nd Death Anniversary

Salil Chaudhary,the great music director of the Golden Era of Hindi Films.He was a genius, he was a poet, lyricist, and storywriter. A staunch communist, he went to jail many times in the course of his political struggle.His love for western classical music taught him the potential of various musical Instruments and the importance of harmony in music. He was a self-taught musician.The songs of Madhumati,Parakh,Maya and Anand are still popular. Salilda's music defies classifications and never follows a predictable format. His songs charm the listener with a first feeling of simplicity.  
His first Hindi film was Do Beegha Zameen in 1953 and the last hindi film was Mera Damaad in 1995,he got the  Filmfare Best Music Director Award for Madhumati in 1958,he was a great fan of Mozart.His love for western classical music was reflected in his songs.

Today being the 65th Birthday of Rishi Kapoor,I bring the Social Media love of Rishi Kapoor. Nowadays he is in Limelight more on his Tweets than his Films.His tweets started to create storms on the internet.From tweeting about Kim Kardashian in a ‘mesh bag’ to being questioned for tweeting a kid video, he kept us amazed.Very recently A case was filed against him for posting pornographic material on his Twitter account.His wife Neetu Singh and other family members have warned him  either he behaves himself on Twitter or shuts down his account.

SADHANA-The Timeless Beauty and Bollywood's Fashion Icon

On the 76th Birth Anniversary Of Sadhana,the heart-throb of the nation in 1960s,we look back at the craze of this great actress.She belonged to an era when Hindi cinema was transitioning from the slow ’50s  to the more playful, chaotic ’60s.Starting her career as heroine in Bollywood through 1960's romantic film Love in Simla. Her fringe haircut became popular during the 1960s and came to be known as "Sadhana cut".Sadhana is also credited for bringing into fashion tight chudidar-kurta. She went with this concept of gracefully changing the traditional loose salwar kameez to her director Yash Chopra for 1965's film Waqt.Initially Yash Chopra was not agreed for this change but Sadhana with the help of her fashion designer Bhanu Athaiya showed him a sample, which he liked. The trend lasted well in the 1970s and can be seen to be adopted by many actresses.
After Love In Shimla her 2nd film Parakh was released.in this film she played the simple village girl,she had to stick her fringe back in order to match the simple village girl she played here.Even without that she looked beautiful.Then came Hum Dono in 1962 The film stars Dev Anand in a double role, and also has Nanda his co-heroine.The film was a big hit that established Sadhana as a leading actress.In the same year Ek Musafir Ek Hasina and Asli Naqli released, both were successful.at the Box Office.In 1963, Sadhana played her first role in a technicolour film Mere Mehboob directed by H. S. Rawail. The film was the "blockbuster" of 1963.She now became the most sought after heroine of Bollywood.
In 1964, she played a double role in the first of the suspense-thriller trilogy, Woh Kaun Thi? This white-sari-clad performance opposite Manoj Kumar earned her first Filmfare nomination as Best Actress.The film was a box office "Hit". Raj Khosla cast her in two more successful mystery films, Mera Saaya (1966) and Anita (1967) thus making her famous as the "Mystery girl". Mera Saaya, a box office "Super Hit".
Sadhana had  health issues due to her thyroid, which she got treated in Boston.She was doing limited films,earlier also she did 2 or 3 films in a year.Her most of the films fared well in Box Office and few of them were Mega Hits such as Mere Mehboob,Waqt,Arzoo and Ek Phool Do Maali.
Raj Khosla was the director who worked with her in many movies.three of their films Woh Kaun Thi, Mera Saaya and Anita presented her a beautiful woman who haunts the hero,who does with her beauty. Sadhana had a unique quality that she blooms and blossoms,she sparkled in her songs.Think of brilliant smile that opens in Tujhe Jeevan Ki Dor Se Baandh Liya Hai or Tera Mera Pyar Amar from Asli Naqli,the softness of Jahan Mein Aisa of Hum Dono or the magnetic pull of the call Lag Jaa Gale of Woh Kaun Thi.
Sadhana died on 25 December 2015 in Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai

K N SINGH-The Most Polished Villain of Bollywood

On the 109th Birth Anniversary of K N Singh,we recall this great Villain of Bollywood.. He was selected to represent India in the 1936 Berlin Olympics but circumstances made him to stay home.He played the polished, sophisticated villain in nearly all his 250-odd films. He was always immaculate in his dress - a suit, overcoat, hat and cigarette completed his villain get-up.He had a peculiar style of his own,raising his eye brows, tough looks, loud and nasty talk, and horrible laugh - he always maintained a poised, cultured and soft exterior.
Whether it was Guru Dutt's Baazi (1951), Shakti Samant's Howrah Bridge (1958) or Vijay Anand's Teesri Manzil (1966), Singh sent shivers down people's spines.

He appeared in several iconic movies in the 40s and 50s including Sikandar (1941), Jwar Bhata (1944) (Dilip Kumar's film debut), Humayun (1945),Awara (1951), Jaal (1952), CID (1956), Howrah Bridge (1958), Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958), Amrapali (1966) and An Evening in Paris (1967).
Singh played prominent roles in movies like Jhoota Kahin Ka (1970), Haathi Mere Saathi (1971) and Mere Jeevan Saathi (1972). His last prominent role was in the 1973 filmLoafer.
He had the distinction of working with three generations of the Kapoor family. He acted with Patriarch Prthiviraj Kapoor in Bidyapati (1937), with Raj Kapoor in Awara (1951) and Rishi Kapoor in Rafoo Chakkar (1975).
Kishore Kumar made him sing and dance in his film Badhti Ka Naam Dadhi in 1974.This is a rare occasion we see K N Singh in a cameo role.

K.N. Singh turned completely blind in his last years. He died in Mumbai on 31 January 2000 aged 91 was survived by his adopted son Pushkar, who is a producer of television serials.

Changing Trend Of Indian Cinema

 Hindi film industry  is the world’s largest film industry. This industry has a remarkably rich history of producing a variety of movies, showcasing different spheres of Indian life.There has been a changing trend in the representation of Indian films through the years. The way movies were made in the 1950s is completely different from the way it is done in the twenty first century.
Today I read somewhere that the film  Dangal released in Dec 2016 has crossed 1000 crores only in China.Our films are being watched not only by NRIs but also by the natives of other countries. The changing patterns in movies are basically a result of the changing mindsets of the audience as well the bid to attract international audience who have different perspective than the ones for whom movies were made in the 1950s.

The 1950s and 1960s are considered to be the golden age in the history of the Indian cinema and saw the rise of some memorable actors like Guru Dutt, Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Meena Kumari, Madhubala, Nargis, Nutan, Dev Anand, Waheeda Rehman, among others.It was Raj Kapoor who introduced Bollywood cinema to international audience.
The 1970s and 80s saw the advent of Masala movies in Bollywood. The audiences were captivated and mesmerised by the aura of actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Hema Malini, and many others.

2000s saw new genre of actors( 3 Khans) used new techniques to enhance their performances which further elevated and upgraded the Indian Film Industry. Lagaan (2001) received critical acclaim and awards at international film festivals, as well as many Indian film awards. It became the third Indian film to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film after Mother India (1957) and Salaam Bombay!(1988).
2008 was a notable year for the Indian film industry as A.R. Rahman received two academy awards for best soundtrack for Slumdog Millionaire.This film popularized Bollywood Songs and Dances.In many countries youth started learning Bollywood style of Dancing.
Indian cinema is no longer restricted to India and is now being well appreciated by international audiences. The contribution of the overseas market in Bollywood box office collections is quite remarkable. Around 30 film production companies were listed in National Stock Exchange of India in 2013.

INDIAN FILMS have gone beyond the geographical boundaries.Hindi films are shown in more than 70 countries, including the Arab nations.The very recent entry of Dangal in China has well proven to be a game changer.The film reportedly raked in over Rs 1,500 crore from that country, almost 50% more than what all overseas theatricals from India collected in 2016 – and nearly two and a half times the business (about Rs 600 crore) done in India. 

Probably now Bollywood will make films keeping China in mind. Bollywood has  come out of the epoch of love and fantasy and learnt to work on experimental plots.As per Vijay Singh, CEO at Fox Star Studios. “We have to do a separate edit of the film, to make it more appropriate for foreign viewers… We tightened the script a bit and clipped the song sequences short,” 

 The effect of globalization of Indian cinema is applicable not only to the Bollywood, but also to the regional film industries of the country. Many Indian films are not only making more money outside the home market  but also attracting foreign producers and directors and actors to the industry. Bollywood movies include western actors like Rachel Shelley in Lagaan, Giselli Monteiro in Love kaj Kal, Barbari Mori in Kite and Chris Patten in Rang De Basanti.

In November 2010 a pact was signed in the Paramount Pictures Studio between the Hollywood and the Bollywood.The pact mainly aims to strengthen the motion picture production, distribution, technology, content protection and commercial cooperation. Many companies from Motion Picture association India had signed the pact including UTV Motions Pictures and Reliance BIG Pictures.

 A major studio that contributed and is still contributing to international films is the Ramoji film city in Hyderabad, India. It is in fact the world’s largest integrated film studio complex. It provides locations, lights, grip equipment, camera, production crew, set designs, props & costumes and post production (Processing, editing, mixing, printing & duplicating). More than 15 international projects have been worked in Ramoji Film city so far.
 It’s important that we make consistent efforts to expand our film markets internationally, both in traditional diaspora regions like the US and UK and non-diaspora markets like China, where UTV and Aamir Khan have shown the way.”

SHAILENDRA-His Life Was a Song

Remembering SHAILENDRA(30th Aug 1923) the Lyricist on his 94th Birth Anniversary.
Poetry was his first love but family situation forced him to take up a job of a railway mechanic.His job in Indian Railways brought him to the city of Bombay.Here in a Kavi Sammelan Raj Kapoor heard him reciting his poems,Raj Kapoor got impressed with his poetry and offered him to write songs for him.Which he initially refused but due to some domestic reasons and responsibilities,  need of money he aproached Raj Kapoor after 6 months and agreed to his terms. His first project was 'Barsaat'. Shailendra wrote his first song 'Barsat Mein Tum Se Mile Hum Sajan..' for Raj Kapoor.His poetic genius was in his ability to convey deepest of thoughts in simplest of words. 
 Eventually, Barsat was also the first film for the emerging music director duo Shankar-Jaikishan. The film proved very successful and after the success of Barsaat Raj Kapoor, Shankar-Jaikishan and Shailendra always worked together.

No doubt, Shailendra gave his best with Shankar-Jaikishan, but he shared equally pleasant rapport with musical giants of those days, like Salil Chowdhary, S. N. Tripathi and S.D. Burman.
