Aan
starring Dilip Kumar, Nadra, Nimmi,produced and directed by Mehboob Khan, which was India's first technicolour film, as it was shot in 16mm Gevacolour and was blown up in Technicolor.The cost of the film was Rs. 3.5 million and it turned out to be the highest grosser of 1952.Aan was one of the first Indian films to have a worldwide release. The film had an extremely lavish London premiere attended by Mehboob Khan, his wife Sadar Akhter and Nimmi. The English version was entitled Savage Princess. On the London trip, they met many western film personalities including Errol Flynn. 

Baiju Bawra starring Bharat Bhushan and Meena Kumari  (her first successful film) Directed by Vijay Bhatt. Produced by Prakash Pictures, with story by Ramchandra Thakur and Music by Naushad. Baiju Bawra was a musical "megahit.The songs like the bhajan, "Man Tadpat Hari Darshan Ko Aaj", becoming popular

Jaal starring Dev Anand and Geeta Bali,Directed by Guru Dutt.Music of S D Burman was instant hit,the song sung by Hemant Da 'Yeh Raat Yeh Chandni Phir Kaha Sun Jaa Dil Ki Dastaan.and
Kishore and Geeta Dutt Duet "De Bhi Chuke Hum Dil Nazrana"became immortal.This was Guru Dutt's Second hit after Baazi.

Daag starring Dilip Kumar,Nimmi. Produced and Directed by Amiya Chakravarty.The film's music was composed by  Shankar Jaikishan.The film fared well at the box office and was declared a hit.The song "Ae Mere Dil Kahin Aur Chal" sung by Talat Mahmood is immortal.

Anhonee starring Raj Kapoor and Nargis,Directed by K A Abbas.The film can be remembered as Nargis film, Nargis was highly appreciated for enacting a dual role and her performance garnered critical acclaim.The film deals with the story of two sisters—Mohini and Roop—both played by Nargis—the legal one raised by a courtesan and the illegal child.The film had music composed by Roshan while lyrics were written by Ali Sardar Jafri.

Maa starring Bharat bhushan and Shyama,It was the last hit of Bombay Talkies which was going through a very rough time,Devika Rani quit Bombay Talkies this year,Bimal Roy was the Director of this film.In fact he was called from Calcutta to Bombay to direct this movie.This was the first film Roy directed in Bombay

Sangdil starring Dilip Kumar and Madhubala, Directed by R. C Talwar.The film's music is by Sajjad Hussain and film song lyrics by Rajinder Krishan.Dara Singh also seen for the first time.After ” Aan ” and ” Daag ” , this film ” Sangdil “ was 3rd consecutive hit of Dilip Kumar in 1952 and thus riding on the wave of 3 super hit films , he reached the dizzying heights of super.stardom.

Nagina starring Nutan and Naseer Khan,this film was considered as horror films It was given A certificate,the heroine Nutan was not adult Infact  this film was considered too frightening for children (rated: 'A'). The film's 15 year old star, Nutan, was escorted by family friend Shammi Kapoor to the film's premier, but was not allowed into the theater.

Bewafa starring Raj Kapoor, Nargis and Ashok Kumar,directed by M.L Anand  It is considered as one of the best films of Raj Kapoor.Talat Mahmood sung all the songs for Raj Kapoor.The song "Dil Matwala Lakh Sambhala " was instant hit.

Aandhiyan starring Dev Anand,Nimmi and Kalpna kartik.It was a navketan Film directed by Chetan Anand.Music of the film was given classical musician, Ali Akbar Khan with lyrics by Narendra Sharma.The great Ravi Shankar gave the background music along with Ali Akbar khan.

Remembering Jan Nisar Akhtar on his Death Anniversary




Jan Nisar Akhtar (18 February 1914 – 19 August 1976) was an important 20th century Indian poet of Urdu ghazals ,nazmsand Lyricist.He was born in 1914, in GwaliorIndia, into a family of Sunni theologians, scholars and poets. His father Muztar Khairabadi was poet as was his father's elder brother, Bismil Khairabadi, while his great grandfather, Fazl-e-Haq Khairabadi, a scholar of Islamic studies and theology, 
Jan Nisar passed his matriculation from Victoria Collegiate High School, Gwalior, and in 1930 joined Aligarh Muslim University, from where he gained his B.A. Honours and M.A. degrees. He started his doctoral work, but had to return to Gwalior due to family conditions.
On his return, he joined Victoria College, Gwalior, as an Urdu Lecturer. Meanwhile in 1943, he married Safiya Siraj-ul Haq, also an alumnus of AMU, and the sister of poet Majaz Luckknawi, their two sons, Javed and Salman were born in 1945 and 1946 respectively. Post-independence riots in Gwalior forced him to shift base to Bhopal, where he joined the Hamidia College as Head of Department of Urdu and Persian,

In 1949, he resigned from his job, moved to Bombay to write lyrics for Urdu/Hindi movies besides ghazals and nazms for general publication. Once in Bombay, he came in touch with other progressive writers, like Mulk Raj AnandKrishan ChanderRajinder Singh Bedi and Ismat Chugtai,
He had a career breakthrough, with Yasmeen (1955), with music by C. Ramchandra.Some of his notable lyrics were, Meri Neendon Mein Tum in Naya Andaz (1956) by Kishore Kumar,Shamshad BegumGarib Jan Key Hamko Naa Tum Daga Dena sung by Mohd. Rafi in Chhoo Mantar, the hit Piya piya piya... in Baap Re Baap (1955) music by O.P. Nayyar,Aap Yun Faaslon Se by Lata Mangeshkar in Shankar Hussain (1977).

He wrote and produced a film, Bahu Begum (1967), starring Pradeep Kumar and Meena Kumari. During the period of four-year to his death he published three collections of his works most important of them being, Khak-e-Dil (The Ashes of Heart"), which has his representative poems from 1935 to 1970, and which won him the Sahitya Akademi Award(Urdu) in 1976

He died in Bombay on 19 August 1976, while he was still working on Kamal Amrohi's film, Razia Sultan (1983).The famous Ghazal by Lata" Ae Dile Nadan" was from this film.

Happy Birthday GULZAR


Gulzar was born on August 18, 1936 in a small town of Deena (now in Pakistan). An eager 

participant in antakshari and keen learner of shairis, he was inclined towards literature and 

poetry right from his school days. That time his name was Sampooran Singh Kalra.


He took the pen name Gulzar Deenvi and later simply to Gulzar.Before becoming a writer, Sampooran took up lot of small jobs in Mumbai one of them was in a garage where he used to touch up accident cars by creating shades of paint.Writing was his passion,he used to write poetry whenever he get spare time in the car garage. Bimal Roy used to come to that garage for repairing his car.He met Gulzar there and read his poems there ,he asked him to leave this job and concentrate on writing.He made him one of his Assistant Director.In Bandini(1963) Gulzar wrote his first song that too on the reccomendation of Shailendra who wrote all the songs accept one" Mora Gora Rang Le Le" sung by Lata Mangeshkar.

From 1963 to 1968 he was assistant Director to Bimal Roy and Hrishikesh Mukharjee.Later on he started writing scripts and Dialogues for films.

Some of the films that Gulzar has written include Anand (1970), Guddi (1971), Bawarchi 

(1972) and Namak Haram (1973) for Hrishida and Do Dooni Char (1968), Khamoshi (1969) 

and Safar (1970) for Asit Sen.

After writing dialogues and screenplay for films like AashirwadAnandKhamoshi, Gulzar directed his first film Mere Apne (1971). 




He then directed Parichay and Koshish.starring Sanjeev Kumar and Jaya Bhaduri,both played deaf and dumb.This movie was highly appreciated.He was given National Award for the best Script.

In 1973, he directed Achanak inspired by the 1958 murder case later he directed Aandhi, based on the Hindi novel "Kaali Aandhi" by Kamleshwar. 

In 1975 Khushboo directed by him starring Jeetendra and Hema Malini was released The film's music composed by R. D. Burman, with lyrics of Gulzar. Haunting song "O Majhi Re" sung by Kishore Kumar, was famous both for lyrics and melody. A couple of other songs like 'do naino mein aansoo bhare hain' and 'bechara dil kya kare' were also very popular. 

In the same year his two more directorial movies Mausam and Aandhi released For Mausam he was given National Award for Best Feature Film and Filmfare Award for Best Direction.and nomination for Direction and Lyrics for Aandhi

In 1977 he wrote songs for Gharonda ,He was given Filfare Award for the song "Do Deewane Is Shahar Mein"

In 1980 he won another Filmfare Award for Aanewala Pal Jaane Wala Hain from Gol Maal directed by Hrishikesh Mukharjee.


In 1981 he once again won Filmfare Award for the song "Hazaar Raahen Mud Ke Dekhi" from Thodi Si Bewafai.
In 1982 he wrote and directed Angoor the film was based on Comedy of Error

In 1984 he was given Filmfare Award for the song Tujhse Naraaz Nahin Zindag from Masoom.

In 1988 he was given National Award for the song Mera Kuchh Saamaan from Ijazat and for the same song in 1989 the Filmfare Award
In 1988, Gulzar directed an eponymous television serial Mirza Ghalib starring Naseeruddin Shah and broadcast on Doordarshan. which was highly appreciated.

Maachis is a 1996 Indian Hindi film directed by Gulzar and produced by R. V. Pandit. Maachis tasted critical and commercial success. Gulzar's direction and the music of Vishal Bhardwaj were strong points. To this day, many songs from the film, particularly "Chappa Chappa Charkha Chale" and "Chhod Aaye Hum Vo Galiyaan" can be heard .This film recieved National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment,its Heroine Tabu got best Actress Award.

Gulzar was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2004 for his contribution to the arts and the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2002. He has won a number of National Film Awards and 20Filmfare Awards

 At the 81st Academy Awards, he won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for "Jai Ho" (shared with A.R.Rahman), for the film Slumdog Millionaire. On 31 January 2010, the same song won him a Grammy Award in the category of Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media. Gulzar has won the most Filmfare Awards for Best Lyricist (11 in total) as well as four Filmfare Awards for Best Dialogue. He was also awarded the 2012 Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration.


Gulzar received the 2013 Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest award of the Indian cinema, on 3 May 2014 at the 61st National Film Awards.


Gulzar is married to actress Raakhee. The couple have a daughter, Meghna Gulzar (Bosky).Meghna Gulzar grew up with her mother & father and, after completing her graduation in films from New York University, went on to become a director of films like FilhaalJust Married , Dus Kahaniyaan and Talvar

According to Samir Chowdhury Sanjeev Kumar's acting was excellent. Lata and Mukesh were so impressed with this film that they wanted the film distribution rights for Maharastra and Rajasthan. Sadly the film and the soundtrack was completely destroyed
