THEME SONGS- Train Songs

PART -1

Railways remains the important part of an average indian. We all have been fascinated with trains and its journies.Bollywood has given us some iconic scenes shots or songs inside a train or on a railway platform.I am presenting here some selected songs of Golden Era as well as Modern Era.
The first Song comes in my mind is Toofan Mail from the 1942 film JAWAB sung and acted by Kanan Devi
Toofan Mail from Jawab 1942
Next in my list is Aayi Bahar Aaj by Pankaj Mallik. This must be one of the oldest Bollywood song filmed on Indian Railways, if not the oldest. This movie is called Doctor (1941) and one can see Punkaj Mullick singing joyously aboard a narrow guage train with wooden bodied coaches, later joined by the fellow passengers as well. As one can see, the coaches are much different from what we see today.

Aayi Bahar Aaj from Doctor 1941

This song is from 1954, when India had just become independent, and people were full of patriotic zeal and energy and they were busy building the nation. It is that immortal song with music of Hemant Kumar, lyrics and voice of kavi Pradeep. Movie is Jagriti (1954)

Aao bachchon tumhe dikhaye

One of my favorite Train songs is Talat-Suraiya duet from Waris (1954), picturized on Talat-Suraiya themselves. Music by Anil Biswas. Here I am presenting Suraiya's Version
Rahi MatwaleI  from Waris 1954

This is one of the greatest train songs of Bollywood, picturised on Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehmaan in 1958 movie Solva Saal. This song topped 1958 Binaca Geetmala Final in 1958, Singer-Hemant Kumar,Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri,Music- S D Burman

Hai apna dil to awara na jaane kispe aayega

Another Train song from the same pair .This time from the film Kala Bazaar,.Music by S D Burman,Lyrics by Shailendra and it is sung by Rafi

Apni to har aah ik toofan hai

-This time, Dev Anand is alone with the girl ( Asha Parekh) in the first class coupe, An argument develops between the two and Dev Anand threatens to jump off the train. Hoping to call his bluff, Asha Parekh dares him to jump off. " Go on, jump, what are you waiting for"- she taunts Dev Anand. And Dev Anand, before Asha parekh knows what happened, jumps off. He sings this song on the top of a car.

Jiya Ho, jiya ho jiya kuch bol to, dil ka parda khol Do

This song is from 1960 film Love In Shimla. In this delightful song, Joy Mukherji manages pretty well, in sheer anticipation of meeting his girl.

Dil thhaam chale hum aaj kidhar

Another offbeat train song. This one isn’t a love song or a philosophical song; it’s just a nonsense song Kishore Kumar – as singer and actor – is at his lunatic best here, leading a group of passengers on a mad dance through the coach. The song is from Half Ticket 1962

This is again a Kishore song from Hum Sab Ustaad Hai 1965.Sung and acted by Kishore kumar. The song is sung by Kishore Kumar and music is given by Laxmikant Pyarelal

Pyar Bantte Chalo

This song is from the film Bahare Phir Bhi Aayengi(1966),sung by Mahendra Kapoor and acted by Dharmendra

IN Part 2 I will be presenting the songs from 1970 onwards

Selected BACKGROUND SONGS of Bollywood

Bollywood films are incomplete without a song.  The majority of songs are seen to be sung by the characters themselves rather than being played in the background Background songs are often used in Hindi films as a tool to take the story forward, you see the characters for instance becoming rich during the course of the song.

ruk na sako tau jao from bandhan(1940)

The first song comes in my mind is Ruk Na Sako To Jao from Bandhan (1940),This song is sung by Arun Kumar Mukherji. The picturisation shows Ashok Kumar leaving in a bullockcart and this song plays in the background

Kaaya Ki Rail Nirali from Station Master(1942), This song is chronologically the first song of the movie and this song gets played at the very beginning as a background song as titles roll on the screen.

The next on my list is this song Uthat Chale Avdhoot from the fim Jogan(1950),The song is picturised as a background song as Dilip Kumar is seen in the picturisation.
Main zindagi mein hamdam rota hi raha hoon

Main zindagi mein hamdam rota hi raha hoon (Barsaat)(1949)  This song is sung by Rafi and it is picturised as a background song as Raj Kapoor and Nargis are shown separated from each other and feeling suitably melancholic.

Aayega aanewaala, from Mahal !949 This song can be included as backgroun as the the actual lip-synching isn’t shown

Pativrata Sita maayi ko from Aawaara(1951)is another background, sung by Rafi and chorus. Shailendra is the lyricist and music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.
Mila Nazar Ko Tera Intezar from the film “Naubahaar” (1952) is Co Produced by Ashok Kumar, the singer is
Afzal Hussain, Lyrics-Satyendra Athaiyya, MD-Roshan.

Preetam Aan Milo from Mr & Mrs 55 (1955) Preetam aan milo is one of those oft-used songs that crop up every now and then in old films Original was sung by C H Atma but here in this movie it was sung by  Geeta Dutt when Madhubala’s character, having come to the realization that she really does love the husband whom she’s always suspected of having married her for mercenary reasons,

Chaandi ke chand tukdon ke liye (Satta Baazaar)(1959) This song is a background song which shows Krishnakant getting married to another woman instead of the lady he professed to love, all that for the sake of money.Sung by Hemant Kumar. The song is written by Gulshan Baawra. Music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

Do dukhiyaare panchhi bicchde jaa rahe

Do dukhiyaare panchhi bicchde jaa rahe (School Master) (1959)  A Rare song, sung by Kavi Pradeep, and written by him as well, begins and it sums up the poignancy of the situation perfectly. Vasant Desai’s music serves as a perfect accompaniment for the song.

Kaagaz Ke Phool 1959 had 2 background songs  Dekhi zamaane ki yaari.  and  Waqt ne kiya kya haseen sitam
both the songs are immortal but i am posting here Waqt Ne kiya

Sun Mere Bandhu Re from Sujata 1959 what a great song by S D Burman, Singer and Music Director – SD Berman, Lyrics – Majrooh Sultanpur

Chal Ri Sajni Ab Kya Soche Bombai Ka Babu 1960 sung by Mukesh music by S D Burman A bidai song, very popular still used by Band wallas during Bidai

Chhodo Kal Ki Baaten from Hum Hindustani, 1960 This hit song composed by Usha Khanna sung by Mukesh, celebrating a newly-independent India Sunil Dutt can be seen here.

Haay re insaan ki majbooriyaan (Ghoonghat) (1960) This song is sung by Rafi. Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist and Ravi composed the music. This is a sad , poignant song that gets played in the background while Bina Rai is seen wallowing in sorrow.

Main apne aap se ghabraa gayaa hoon

Main apne aap se ghabraa gayaa hoon(Bindiya) (1960) This song is sung by Rafi and it is picturised on Balraj Sahni and Padmini. It is a background song which gets played while the two actors are seen looking very sad and weepy indeed.

Rim Jhim ke Tarane Lekar Aayi Barsat

Rim Jhim ke Tarane Lekar Aayi Barsat from Kala Bazar 1960 is a romantic duet but it is in background The lead pair Dev Anand and Waheeda rehman on whom it is picturised, are silently walking (alone) together, their memories come pouring out in the form of this song.

O Jaane wale ho sake toh laut ke aana

O Jaane wale ho sake toh laut ke aana (Bandini 1963) This song again sung and composed by S D Burman, there is one more song from the same film O Re Manjhi but it can not be called 100% background because one fisherman is shown lip syncing in few scenes.

Waqt Se Din Aur Raat

Waqt Se Din Aur Raat from Waqt 1964 film sung by Rafi music by Rafi is another background song whic was the soul of the movie.
kahin deep jale kahin dil

Forgotten Singers of Bollywood

For those who are unaware, Anwar is  a professional singer, who once lent his voice to stars like Rajesh Khanna among others. But with time glory days ended and Anwar was compelled to sing in beer bars to feed his family.
Anwar Hussain(1st Feb 1948), known more by his first name Anwar, is a playback singer who rose to prominence in the Hindi playback industry because of the uncanny resemblance of his voice with that of singer Mohammed Rafi,

After the death of Rafi he was given lot of songs, people used to think that he is Rafi's son actually he was not. His father was an accomplished harmonium player and an assistant music director to the famed Ghulam Haider.
, He was classically trained by Ustad Abdul Rehman Khan ,incidentally same musical academy that produced the legendary playback singer Mahendra Kapoor.
Initially he used to sing Mohammad Rafi's Song on various small stage shows,His voice was very similar to Rafi, even once in a sound studio Rafi heard his song he got confused when did he sang that song, later he was told that this song is sung by a new singer for a new film. The song was "Humse Ka Bhool Hui", which was picturised on famous actor Rajesh Khanna. Both the film and song were super hit; hence Anwar started getting work and recognition.
Humse Ka Bhool Hui

Anwar got his first break by the music director Kamal Rajasthani, who gave him a chance to sing for his filmMere Gharib Nawaz. The song was Kasme Hum Apni Jaan Ki.
Kasme Hum Apni Jaan Ki

In a career span stretching over thirty years, Anwar sang a variety of songs including filmi songs, classical songs and contemporary ghazalsbhajansqawwali, and Sufi songs. He was offered to sing in Raj Kapoor's Prem Rog, which he declined. However he got to sing a duet Ye Pyar Tha Ya Kuch with Sudha MalhotraManmohan Desai wanted him to sing in Amitabh Bachchan starrer Mard, but the songs later went to Shabbir Kumar as Anwar demanded too much.
In 2004 Anwar composed an album called Meri Aashiqui Se Pehle broadcast on popular RKB show of Sahara Channel. All the songs in the album were mesmerising so much so that one would sense the magic of Mohammad Rafi and appreciate Anwar's talent.
