 Actor, singer, lyricist, composer, producer, director, screenwriter and scriptwriter Kishore Kumar (4 August 1929 – 13 October 1987).was the kind of genius that rarely surfaces on earth.
He acted in 86 Hindi films, sang for in total 1,188 films, produced 14 films, and wrote the story for these films. Six of these films were not completed.He directed 12 films, four of which were abandoned.Composed for 10 movies of his home production.He is also credited with writing the screenplays of five films, two of which remained incomplete.
He rendered his first solo song for Ziddi in 1948, and the last a duet with Asha Bhosle for Waqt ki Aawaz in 1988. A singing career of 40 years during which he recorded 2,905 songs for films and private albums consisting of 2,661 in Hindi and 221 in Bengali.

Born as Prabodh Chandra Dey on 1 May, 1919, and later nicknamed Manna Dey, he was one of those rare singers who sang in a number of languages.

Remembering DADA SAHEB PHALKE on his 147th Birth Anniversary

 Born on April 30, 1870 at Tryambakeshwar, Maharashtra,The Father of Indian Cinema Dada Saheb Phalke  was artistic in nature and displayed great interest in the creative arts. He pursued arts for completing his graduation and later took up various jobs such as that of a photographer and a draftsman. He also tried setting up his printing business but closed it down when problems arose with his partner. 
The turning point in his life came when he saw a silent film and was deeply moved by its poignancy.He decided to become a filmmaker and viewed it as his mission. His first full length Indian motion picture, ‘Raja Harishchandra’, the most important milestone in Indian cinematic history.For making this movie he had to take loan from his wife,who sold her jwellery for fullfilling her husband"s dream.

 He was a visionary who foresaw the potential of the film medium and also made people realize its cultural and financial worth.His first film Raja Harishchand  was publicly shown on May 3, 1913 at Mumbai's Coronation Cinema. It was an unbelievable experience for public and he received much appreciation for his work The film was a huge success which encouraged many businessmen to produce more films 
In his 19 years of film making career, he made 95 movies and 26 short films. His other motion picture works include ‘Rajrishi Ambarish’ (1922), ‘Ram Maruti Yuddha’ (1923), ‘Guru Dronacharya’ (1923), ‘Ashwathama’ (1923), ‘Shivajichi Agryahun Sutaka’ (1924), ‘Satyabhama’ (1925), ‘Ram Rajya Vijay’ (1926), ‘Bhakta Pralhad’ (1926), ‘Hanuman Janma’ (1927), ‘Draupadi Vashtraharan’ (1927),‘Parshuram’ (1928), ‘Sant Mirabai’ (1929) and ‘Kabir Kamal’ (1930).
In 1937, he directed his first sound film ‘Gangavataran’ which also proved to be the last film of his career. With the introduction of sound in cinema and the new diversified ways of filmmaking, his work lost admiration and eventually he took retirement from filmmaking.

He passed away on February 16, 1944, in Nashik, Bombay, British India, at the age of 73.In recognition of his lifetime contribution to the Indian cinema, the ‘Dadasaheb Phalke Award’ was instituted in 1969 by the India government. The prestigious award is the highest official recognition for film personalities in India and is presented annually by the president of India for remarkable contribution to Indian cinema.

Immortal Songs by Shamshad Begum-A Tribute on her 4th Death Anniversary

 A distinctive voice and  a versatile artist, singing over 6,000 songs in Hindi and Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil and Punjabi languages and of them 1287 songs were from Hindi films.Shamshad Begum was born on 14 th April 1919 and died on 23 rd April 2013.
Her talent was first spotted by her principal when she was in primary school in 1924. Impressed by the quality of her voice, she was made head singer of classroom prayer. At 10, she started singing folk-based songs at religious functions and family marriages.
She began her singing career from All India Radio (AIR) in Peshawar and Lahore from 1937.Shamshad Begum sang extensively for composers including Naushad Ali, O. P. Nayyar, C. Ramchandra and S. D. Burman from 1946 to 1960. Her peak period in the Hindi film industry was from 1940 to 1955 and again from 1957 to 1968.She was the highest paid female singer from 1940 to 1955 and again post Mother India in 1957 to 1964.Her song "Kajra Mohabbat Wala" from the 1968 film Kismat and Nathaniya Hale To Bada Maza from the 1971 film Johar Mehmood in Hong Kong remains popular.
She was conferred with the prestigious O. P. Nayyar award for her contribution to Hindi film music. She was also conferred the Padma Bhushan in 2009.Begum died at her Mumbai residence on the night of 23 April 2013 after a prolonged illness. She was 94.She was cremated in a small, dignified ceremony.

Shakeel Badayuni was born in Badayun, Uttar Pradesh on 3rd August 1916. After completing his BA, he moved to Delhi as a supply officer, but continued participating in mushairas, earning fame nationwide. 
He got his first break in Hindi films from the film Dard(1947). The songs of Dard proved to be very successful, especially Uma Devi (Tun Tun)'s Afsana Likh Rahi Hoon.He never looked back after that.
Shakeel shared a close friendship with Naushad,he and Naushad became one of the most sought after composer/lyricist duos in the industry. 
 Although Shakeel Badayuni worked most extensively with Naushad, he also collaborated with Ravi and Hemant Kumar as well. His lyrics for the song Husnwale Tera Jawab Nahin and Ravi's music score both won Filmfare Awards for the hit film Gharana. His other notable film with Ravi is Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960), while Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) is his biggest hit with Hemant Kumar. The title song from Chaudhvin Ka Chand, rendered by Mohammed Rafi, won Badayuni the Filmfare Award for Best Lyricist in 1961.
Shakeel Badayuni succumbed to diabetes complications at the age of fifty-three, on 20 April 1970, at Bombay Hospital leaving behind his wife, two sons and two daughters.

Remembering LALITA PAWAR-The Leading Actress of Silent Era of Bollywood

Born Amba Laxman Rao Sagun on 18 April 1916, into an orthodox family in Yeola in Nashik,Lalita Pawar started her acting career at age nine in the film, Raja Harishchandra (1928), and later went on to play lead roles in silent era and 1940's films.

She changed her name to Lalita and in the 1930s acted in a series of successful daredevil silent films like Himmat-e-Mard ("A Brave Man"), Chevorlet and Captain Kishore..
LALITA PAWAR played the squint-eyed, scheming and vitriolic mother- in-law to perfection in scores of Indian films in an acting career that spanned nearly 60 years in Bollywood appearing in over 700 films.She was not a born squint in fact she became squint eyed in an accident while shooting in a film.
In 1942, as a part of a scene in the movie Jung-E-Azadi, actor Master Bhagwan was to slap her hard. Being a new actor, he accidentally slapped her very hard, which resulted in facial paralysis and a burst left eye vein. Three years of treatment later, she was left with a defective left eye; thus she had to abandon lead roles

She later became famous as a character actress, in Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati cinema.Her other memorable roles were in film, Anari (1959), Shri 420 and Mr & Mrs 55, and the role of Manthara, in Ramanand Sagar's television epic serial, Ramayan
She was given Best Supporting Actress Filmfare Award for Anari 1959,She was also given the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Acting in 1961.She was a powerful performer met a sad and lonesome end.Her death was unnoticed for two days when her family was in Mumbai for her husband's throat surgery.She died on 24 February 1998 in Aundh, Pune, where she had been staying, for a while.
