50 Years of RAM AUR SHYAM

Exactly today Ram Aur Shyam turns 50.the film was released on 15th Dec 1967.Ram Aur Shyam was the remake of the popular Telugu film Ramudu Bheemudu, which in turn was loosely based on Alexander Dumas’s The Corsican Brothers. The film was a super hit.
The success of Ram aur Shyam, directed by Tapi Chanakya, must be credited to two great actors – Dilip Kumar and Pran. The music by Naushad, with lyrics by Shakeel Badayuni, adds to the movie’s charm. One of the best songs is Aaj Ki Raat Mere Dil Ki Salaami Le Le, in which Shyam bids farewell to Rehman before abandoning his fake identity as Ram.
Dilip Kumar played Double Role in this film.He got Best Actor award by Filmfare for this film.
He is both Ram, the timid and seemingly mentally-retarded son of a millionaire industrialist, and Shyam, a sturdy yeoman brawler with an appetite like that of the legendary Bhima of the Mahabharata.

Ram isn’t really retarded, just terrorized by his sadistic, whip-wielding brother-in-law, Gajendra (Pran, of course), who, goaded by an evil mother, keeps Ram, along with his own wife and daughter, virtual prisoners in their palatial mansion.
Shyam is strong, brave and mischievous,he is  Ram's long lost twin brother Shyam (Dilip Kumar) lives in a village with his adopted mother Ganga whom he believes to be his birth mother. No one other than Ganga knows the truth about the twin brothers. He escapes to the city, after a mischievous conflict with Ganga, and meets Anjana, who is impressed by his personality. Anjana and her father confuse Shyam with Ram. Ram meets Shanta who thinks he is Shyam and takes him forcefully to his mother. Ram and Shanta develop feelings for each other. Meanwhile, Shyam decides to take the place of Ram to face Gajendra.
The scenes of Dilip Kumar as the flamboyant Shyam are in sharp contrast to those of the timid Ram, who is so terrified of Gajendra that he dare not look him in the eye. The thespian’s bonhomie with his co-stars Waheeda Rehman and Mumtaz is apparent, leading to relaxed and memorable performances from all concerned.
Only a truly fine actor like Dilip Kumar could have done pulled off the double act so convincingly, making Ram Aur Shyam a lasting treat for Hindi film buffs.

50 Years Of Jewel Thief

Some films are defined by their repeat value. Thrillers generally don't fall in this category. But “Jewel Thief” is an exception.Jewel Thief is a 1967 spy thriller Released on 27th October exactly 50 years ago. It was produced by Dev Anand's home production, Navketan Films, directed by Vijay Anand. The film stars Dev AnandVyjayantimala and Ashok Kumar in the lead roles. It also features four bond girl-like actresses portrayed by TanujaHelenFaryal and Anju Mahendru.

The film's basic ethics are drawn from a Hitchcockian model, but Vijay wanted to play by his brother's image as well. So he carved his character in a James Bond mould, somebody who doesn't mind flirting with more than one woman to reach his goal.
The film hangs on the  shoulders of Dev Anand, who played Vinay, mistaken for his supposed lookalike Amar/Prince, the jewel thief. The biggest surprise of the film was the casting of Ashok Kumar against his popular image.

The film’s complex tale is meticulously plotted, as are the various twists and turns that appear credible despite obvious contrivances. Jewel Thief is also extremely well crafted and nicely paced, and keeps the suspense going for a good part of its running length of around three hours.

Vyjayanthimala is fine enough as the damsel-in-distress who has her own baggage to deal with. Helen, Faryal and Anju Mahendru effectively do their bits as molls, adding significantly to the eye candy value.

Another highlight of the film was its music SD Burman’s score is hip, lively and contemporary for its time. The songs are extremely well composed, be it the haunting Rula Ke Gaya Sapna Mera, the two romantic duets Aasman Ke Neeche and Dil Pukare or the deftly choreographed club song Baithe Hain Kya Uske Paas. How can we forget the classic song and dance Hothon Pe Aisi Baat Daba ke Chali Ayi and Yeh Dil Na Hota Bechara.

The film was a super hit and among the Top 5 films of that year other being Upkar, Ram Aur Shyam and Farz

50 years of FARZ

This film FARZ released on 6th Oct 1967 gave bolllywood the new star Jeetendra,This movie also gave him that Jumping Jack image, something that he put to good use in loads of movies at least till Gulzar gave him an image makeover with Parichay (1972). The birthday song in Farz has become one of the most popular birthday songs (from Hindi films) ever. The film along with its music became super hit.
This was the first hindi film that introduced James Bond type genre in the years to come. Jeetendra plays Agent 116—Gopal—with enthusiastic aplomb and an Elvis-style pompadour.
Gopal is assigned to the case by the head of CID (David) after his previous Agent (303) is killed on the job, On the way to his new assignment he is seated next to the lovely Sunita (Babita), and he wastes no time in showering her with insincere compliments too.

Sunita's father Damodar (Sajjan) killed Agent 303.Gopal discovers when he tracks down 303’s pictures, which include a shot of Damodar’s license plate. Gopal follows the car one evening and is shocked when Sunita gets out of it. Gopal continues to romance Sunita and attends her birthday party where he sings the aforementioned Birthday Song “Baar Baar Din Ye Aaye”
Gopal tells Sunita the truth about her beloved father. Gopal’s job of course is to find out who the big guys behind Damodar actually are.On following Agent 303 sister Kamla who was looking for her brother's murderer who thinks that Gopal was the murderer.

Kamla seductively dances and mix some intoxicant pill in his drink which overlooked by 116, and acted as drank and eventually senseless. Goons take him to their secret den in city outskirts,In the den, 116 captures one of the goon leaders and forced him to reveal some information. Here he comes to know the Chinese conspiracy to destabilize the nation and accommodated by traitors inside, led by a person wearing Mao uniform named Supremo who only speaks a few broken English sentences. Rest of the movie follows the 116's efforts to thwart a foreign conspiracy against India.

Farz was a Super Hit film of 1967,its music was also super hit,the film gave two stars to Bollywood Jeetendra and Babita

An Evening In Paris was released on 1st Jan 1967.It was  produced and directed by Shakti Samanta with story by Sachin Bhowmick. It revolves in the French capital city of Paris. The movie stars Shammi KapoorSharmila Tagore in a double role, Pran as the villain, and Rajindernath in the comic subplot. The foreign locations and its music were the highlight of this film.Beside these the appearance of Sharmila Tagore in a Bikini was also the talking point.it was a first time the Hindi Cinegoers saw a heroine in Bikini in Hindi Films. Wearing a bikini put her name in the Indian press as one of Bollywood's ten hottest actresses of all time,The film was a big hit.

The film begins with a monologue on how a rich heiress who has been in love thrice, moves to Paris to find the true love which she feels she cannot find in India. On one of her outings, Deepa meets Shyam/Sam (Shammi Kapoor), who immediately falls in love with her and begins to follow her around. After some initial resistance, Deepa eventually gives in to his charms.

In Paris she meets Shyam (Pran) who is her father's secretary's son,Who needs money to clear his gambling debts,he plans to marry her.Since Deepa does not love him, she refuses telling him that she only loves Sam.

Shekher finds a girl Suzy who looks similar to Deepa and shows her Deepa with Sam, so that she can learn her mannerisms.Later he kidnaps Deepa then puts Suzy in her place at her home.
Deepa's father learns of Deepa's kidnapping and flies to Paris. He and Sam discover that Suzy is Deepa's lost twin sister, who had been kidnapped when she was very young and her real name is Roopa. Deepa's father is overjoyed that he has found his daughter, but Suzy refuses to accept herself as his daughter.

In the mean time Suzy also started loving Shyam,He tells her that he loves Deepa he needs her help to find Deepa. This angers Suzy at first but later she realises that she should not come between her sister and her love.
Near climax real Deepa (pretending to be Suzy) escapes from.the clutches of Shekher but Shekhar reaches the boat where Deepa is waiting for Sam and drives off with her. Sam also reaches just after Shekhar drives off. He jumps in the boat from a helicopter and beats Shekhar up. Sam throws him overboard where he floats over the waterfall. Deepa and Sam escape to a small rock in the middle of waterfall from where they are rescued by the helicopter.

Audiance really enjoyed the helicopter chase and the song aasman se aaya farishta. We’ve had a lot to look at, after all, and that’s really all Shammi and the filmmakers promised.

50 years of UPKAR-The birth of Mr Bharat

Upkar is a 1967 Indian Hindi film directed by Manoj Kumar. It was released on 1st Jan 1967.The film held the top spot at the box-office in 1967. Manoj Kumar started his Mr. Bharat persona and his brand of patriotism & fearless courage with this film.
It was the Late Prime Minister Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri ji who praised Manoj Kumar for his earlier film Shaheed and enthused Manoj Kumar to make a film on the Jai Jawaan Jai Kissan slogan.
The film story moves around a widow mother (Played by Kamini Kaushal) having 2 sons  Bharat (Manoj Kumar) and Puran (Prem Chopra). While she would like to educate her sons, and ensure that they lead good lives, she cannot do so on her own, and must sacrifice the career of one son so that the second can achieve this goal. For this purpose, Bharat willingly sacrifices his life, toils hard so that Puran can get a decent education, which he does, excels in his studies, and also goes abroad. But Puran on returning back didn't fulfilled the dreams of his mother and brother. He became cruel, self-serving man who now calls himself Kumar (also Prem Chopra), and whose one goal is to usurp and divide the family property, so that he can continue to live a comfortable life.

The story moves further with the 1965 Indo Pak War . Bharat is off to the war; while his selfish brother, with the help of his greedy uncle, Charandas(Madan Puri) and some partners, tries to gain profit by selling drugs and blackmarketering in the market. In the end, Bharat returns as a war hero defeating the demon designs of the enemy and his brother repents as he is caught by the police (by the brother-in-law of Bharat). Hence, he vows to be a good & hardworking brother just like his Indo-Pak war veteran brother Bharat.

The highlight of the film was Pran, who played  his first positive character role. Pran has performed the role of the handicapped, carefree and outspoken Malang Chacha so well that you can never forget him after watching this movie. The song - Kasme Vaade Pyar Wafa has been picturized on him only. For this role he was given many awards. The film also won several major awards. The music was given by Kalyanji Anandji which was super hit,The song Mere Desh Ki Dharti Sona Ugle is immortal, other songs like Kasme Vaade Pyaar Wafa and Deewanon Se Ye Mat Poocho were hit.
This film  still appeals and should not be missed by the people interested in watching golden oldies. It has a great repeat value and the first time watcher will definitely like to watch it again.
The movie was super hit of 1967,it earned 3.5 crores that time.

The Films that are 50:TEESRI KASAM- A Melancholic Delight.

Teesri kasam  is a 1966 film based on a short story, mare gaye gulfam by phanishwarnath renu, a hindi novelist. the film stars Raj kapoor and Waheeda Rehman. the duo Shankar-Jaikishan composed the flim's score.directed by Basu bhattacharya, Teesri Kasam is an unconventional film that portrays the society of the rural india and simplicity of villagers.Released on  01 July,1966 was a box office disaster.

The story is rather simple: Hiraman, a cart-driver who is involved in black-marketing is almost caught by the police, and, upon escaping, vows he’ll never trade smuggled goods any more. He then reverts to bamboo trafficking, but that’s also a failure, and similarly he vows not to deal with it: what will be his third vow (teesri kasam)? We learn about it as he sets off on a journey, loaded this time with a rightful cargo, even if the lawfulness of this consignment will have to be reconsidered along the way, and will in effect lead to that fateful third vow.

The songs of the movie perfectly match the action, in a way that only movies of that era knew how to, it seems to me. They is always a profound justification for them, they always comment upon the action in a true and meaningful way.

All the songs filmed on Hiraman are a reflection of his simple heart and lack of worldly-wisdom. The songs in the Nautanki, filmed on Hirabai, tantamount to either the rural folk songs when she is merely entertaining the crowd, or a deep pang of love lost when she is reflecting her relationship with Hiraman. The Chalat Musafir Moh Liyo Re song is an absolute rural-chaupal song, the types heard even today in those parts of the country.
One of the greatest lyricists, Shailendra, who was a good friend of Raj Kapoor, was so enamoured by Renu’s novel that he wanted to produce the film adaptation. He roped in Basu Bhattarchaya as the director, a protégé of the great Bimal Roy, and Basu Chatterjee, an upcoming director assisted him in direction. Shailendra had planned for Mehmood and Meena Kumari to play the lead, but that didn’t materialise due to various reasons, and his old friend Raj Kapoor volunteered to step in as the lead, and also brought another friend, Waheeda Rehman, as the female lead. Raj Kapoor even agreed to work for a nominal fee of only Re. 1 for the film.

The film went on to win the President’s Gold Lotus Award for Best Feature Film of 1966, Best Lyricist (Shailendra) and Best Director (Basu Bhattarchaya), but Shailendra did not live long to see all the critical accolades showered on his masterpiece.
