There was a misconception that it was Mohd Rafi who gave Shammi Kapoor the hit songs of his career with "YAHOO" etc. But the fact is, that his first hit singer was actually ‘KING OF GHAZALS’ TALAT MAHMOOD throughout the 50's who gave him a host of hit songs in his movies like "THOKAR", "MEMSAHIB", "NAQAAB", "SIPAH SALAR", "MEHBOOBA", "CHOR BAZAAR","LAILA MAJNU" and "MOHAR". Mohd Rafi came into his career much later in the 60 s with YAHOO,this was stated by him in an interview. Long before Tumsa Nahin Dekha happened and catapulted Shammi Kapoor to fame, he acted in many obscure movies, many of them flops. His career was going nowhere, to the point where he had thought that he would quit the industry and join a tea estate. According to Shammi Kapoor, Thokar was one of his 'super hits' (comparatively, of course). In fact, it was his only hit in three or four years. It was Talat's rendition of Ae gham-e-dil kya karoon that gave Shammi one of the first (and biggest) 'hit' songs of his career. Composed by the oft under-rated Sardar Malik father of Anu Malik. Talat Mahmood's Songs For Shammi Kapoor
Do you know that the Shammi Kapoor we know today became Shammi Kapoor after giving 19 flop films in a row.tThe first of Shammi Kapoor was Jeevan Jyoti but Rail Ka Dibba (1953) was released first. He reinvented himself in Tumsa Nahin Dekha (1957), losing his seducer’s pencil moustache and fashioning his hair in typical ducktail style of the 1950sThis new Shammi did what no other hero had done earlier. He swayed, sashayed and sizzled while singing songs on screen. He became the first dancing star of Bollywood. His dance songs were never Choreographed.Today (14th Aug 2017) on his 6th Death Anniversary I look for his dancing style.. Before Tumsa Nahin Dekha, the Hindi film hero seldom danced. How could he, for the weight of the entire world was on his shoulders. On the rare occasion that he did, like Raj Kapoor in ‘Mud mud ke na dekh’ or in ‘Dil ka haal suney dilwaala’ in Shree 420, his actions were characterized by a kind of rhythmic one-two, one-two movement that responded to the beat of the song. The final song in Tumsa Nahin Dekha, ‘Sar par topi laal’, made a dramatic departure. Early in the song, after Shankar has sung his half of the mukhda, ‘Gorey gorey gaal, gaal pe uljhey uljhey baal, ho tera kya kehna’, he claps along with the junior male artistes for a few seconds, showing a joviality that matches the beat of the song.He is shown dancing on one leg, going back and forth with the male artistes, matching them step for step all the while. He shouts out ‘oh sad ke, oh beliyaa’ and flits across the frame. In Dil Deke Dekho (1959), Shammi dances his way through most of the film. Shammi’s entire frame features prominently in the songs ‘Megha re bole’, ‘Do ekum do’, ‘Pyaar ho toh keh do yes’ and ‘Yaar chulbula hai’, differentiating him from other mainstream heroes. Shammi Kapoor in an interview claimed not knowing how to dance but his energy, verve and rhythm in those songs were unmatched and very different from the norm. He found stardom with his first colour film, Junglee, released in 1961, which proved a blockbusting hit. After Junglee began a series of box-office hits like Dil Tera Deewana (1962) and the thriller Teesri Manzil (1966) with hit songs and his style of dancing mannerism. The way he smiled, the way he pouted and the way he looked into heroine’s eyes, everything was infectious; simply because it was fresh, fun and flamboyant. Even his famed dances were never choreographed; on the dance-floor, he just needed a catchy melody and a zingy beat and then he rock ’n’ rolled. Shammi Kapoor-songs have become a genre by itself. Racy, robust, rhythmic and romantic numbers composed by the master composers like O.P. Nayyar, Shankar- Jaikishan, Ravi, Usha Khanna and R.D. Burman added their own magic to this rebel star’s screen persona.

An Evening In Paris was released on 1st Jan 1967.It was produced and directed by Shakti Samanta with story by Sachin Bhowmick. It revolves in the French capital city of Paris. The movie stars Shammi Kapoor, Sharmila Tagore in a double role, Pran as the villain, and Rajindernath in the comic subplot. The foreign locations and its music were the highlight of this film.Beside these the appearance of Sharmila Tagore in a Bikini was also the talking point.it was a first time the Hindi Cinegoers saw a heroine in Bikini in Hindi Films. Wearing a bikini put her name in the Indian press as one of Bollywood's ten hottest actresses of all time,The film was a big hit.
The film begins with a monologue on how a rich heiress who has been in love thrice, moves to Paris to find the true love which she feels she cannot find in India. On one of her outings, Deepa meets Shyam/Sam (Shammi Kapoor), who immediately falls in love with her and begins to follow her around. After some initial resistance, Deepa eventually gives in to his charms.
In Paris she meets Shyam (Pran) who is her father's secretary's son,Who needs money to clear his gambling debts,he plans to marry her.Since Deepa does not love him, she refuses telling him that she only loves Sam.
Shekher finds a girl Suzy who looks similar to Deepa and shows her Deepa with Sam, so that she can learn her mannerisms.Later he kidnaps Deepa then puts Suzy in her place at her home. Deepa's father learns of Deepa's kidnapping and flies to Paris. He and Sam discover that Suzy is Deepa's lost twin sister, who had been kidnapped when she was very young and her real name is Roopa. Deepa's father is overjoyed that he has found his daughter, but Suzy refuses to accept herself as his daughter.
In the mean time Suzy also started loving Shyam,He tells her that he loves Deepa he needs her help to find Deepa. This angers Suzy at first but later she realises that she should not come between her sister and her love. Near climax real Deepa (pretending to be Suzy) escapes from.the clutches of Shekher but Shekhar reaches the boat where Deepa is waiting for Sam and drives off with her. Sam also reaches just after Shekhar drives off. He jumps in the boat from a helicopter and beats Shekhar up. Sam throws him overboard where he floats over the waterfall. Deepa and Sam escape to a small rock in the middle of waterfall from where they are rescued by the helicopter.
Audiance really enjoyed the helicopter chase and the song aasman se aaya farishta. We’ve had a lot to look at, after all, and that’s really all Shammi and the filmmakers promised.
SHAMSHER RAJ KAPOOR was the real name of Shammi Kapoor, born on 21st Oct.1931 in Bombay.Shammi Kapoor was not launched as a star kid by his superstar father Prithviraj Kapoor. He struggled for years to carve his niche in Bollywood. He began his career working for his father’s Prithvi Theatre as a junior artiste at a monthly salary of Rs 50. He made his debut in Hindi Films in the year 1953, when the film Jeevan Jyoti was released. It was directed by Mahesh Kaul and Chand Usmani was Kapoor’s first heroine.
Shammi Kapoor made his last appearance in Imitiaz Ali's directorial venture called Rockstar in which he has acted along with his Grandnephew Ranbir Kapoor.
The super-energetic dancer who taught Indians how to groove, will always be remembered for his lively screen-presence. A romantic hero who was proverbially born with his dancing shoes on, was also a tech-geek and was way ahead of his contemporaries in visualising trends.
