Bhagwan Dada- His Signature Dance Steps became a Sensation.

Bhagwan Dada was the first dancing superstar of Indian cinema. He had rhythm and music embedded deep within him. He originated a particular style of dancing. That tender sway of the hip, the naughty look of an infant, and the candor of a star – he possessed it all. He had swag before swag got swag! His signature dance moves soon became a sensation. He was among the few male stars to break into an inner elite circle of actors/dancers, which was dominated by women. Many actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Govinda, Mithun Chakraborty, and Rishi Kapoor are known to have drawn inspiration from him.

He entered the world of cinema through silent films. His first film of notable significance was called Criminal. He steadily infused himself into the art of directing and made his directorial debut with the film Bahadur Kisan. He co-directed it with Chandrarao in 1938.

One of Bhagwan Dada’s greatest works was a social film called Albela. The film featured Bhagwan Dada and Geeta Bali and the music was composed by C. Ramchandra. It is said that C. Ramachandra and Bhagwan Dada were discussing the film at a Churchgate restaurant in Mumbai and C. Ramachandra promised Bhagwan Dada to compose the music for the film, “for the love of it.”

He was perhaps the first to introduce Ramba, Samba, Disco, rock-n-roll and other dance forms to Hindi cinema, the first male star to do so in the industry ruled by female dancers. Bhagwan Dada as he was popularly called, created a new grammar of comedy, through the unique style of acting and dancing, which inspired a whole generation of comedians in the Hindi cinema.
Bhagwan Abhaji Palav popularly known as Bhagwan Dada was born on 1st Aug 1913 and died on 4th February 2002 was a popular comedian of Bollywood of the Golden Era. He is best known for his social film Albela (1951) and the song "Shola Jo Bhadke".A veteran actor of about 600 films in the course of more than five decades.

He produced many films after ALBELA but most of his films flopped, His film "Sahme Hue Sapney" didn’t survive beyond the first show. Then he suffered a heavy loss while making "Hanste Rehna" with Kishore Kumar. He had invested his own money, pawned his wife’s jewellery and withdrawn all his life’s savings. But halfway through, Kishore started dilly-dallying and "behaving crazily" and the project had to be shelved.

. He later took up small roles in multiple films, some of which were lost in obscurity. Unfortunately, his quest for success in films took a toll on his life and he lost all his wealth and ended up living in a chawl in Dadar, Mumbai.

He died of a heart attack on 4th Feb 2002. He was 89 years old.

Bollywood Songs on Money

Yesterday the annual budget for the country was presented in the Parliament. this inspired me to write a blog on how the Hindi cinema’s lyricists see the power of money and its importance. P L Santoshi in the 1950 film 'Sargam' wrote ' Baap Bada Na Bhaiya, Sabse Bada Rupaiya' which 25 years later Mehmood  sang the same Mukhda in the 1976 film 'Sab Se Bada Rupaiya'

In 1951 film 'Hamari Shaan', the lyricist Anjum Jaipuri wrote' Damdi Damdi Paisa Paisa Jod Mar Jaate Hain Kanjooson Ka Maal Aakhir Mein Doctor Hi Khate Hain'. In 1957 the lyricist Rajendra Krishan wrote 'Pehle Paisa Phir Bhagwan' in 'Miss Marry' In 1960 film Kala Bazar lyricist Shailendra writes 'Teri Dhum Har Kahin, Tujh Sa Yaar Koi Nahin' picturized on Dev Anand.

The Man Who Whistled in More Than 1500 Songs

Whistling is an art, it is being a part of Bollywood songs since the 30s. Many memorable songs have a whistle the highlight of those songs. Whistling is being used in prelude or interlude in many songs. As a matter of fact, whistling was quite a vogue in most of the Dev Anand films

How whistling can make a career is a perfect example to Nagesh Surve who for the first time whistled in Julie After that he never looked back. Having whistled in over 1,500 Hindi film songs, Surve became Hindi film industry's chief whistler, collaborating with top-notch music directors, right from Lakshmikant-Pyarelal and Shankarlal-Jaikishan to Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Pritam.

Nagesh Surve was a musician, he plays the violin, he was a member of Shankar Jaikishan orchestra but this art was used by Kanu Roy,  music composer in Hindi and Bengali films for the first time in 1973 film Avishkar. Later Rajesh Roshan used his whistling in the song of Julie 1975.

Song of Julie 1975
After the success of Julie , his whistling became a constant in Bollywood songs, something that we got used to, without notice. Surve has whistled in music tracks for films like Karz (Ik Haseena Thi), Hero (Ding dong), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (Hai hai re hai yeh ladka), Satya (Sapne me milti hai), Fanaa (Chand Sifarish).

50 Years of Kati Patang

Kati Patang was released on 29th Jan 1951.By that time Rajesh Khanna was the Super Star of Bollywood. All of his films were making Jubilees  The Rajesh Khanna phenomenon was at its peak. This was the third picture of Shakti Samanta and Rajesh Khanna together and the second film of the trio of Shakti Samanta, Rajesh Khanna and R D Burman.

The film was tragic in nature with a non-glamorous heroine role but became hit because of its music. The film gave us evergreen hits like Yeh Shaam Mastani, Pyar Diwana Hota Hai and Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai. all sung by Kishore Kumar. One song 'Jis Gali Me Tera Ghar Na Ho Sajna' was sung by Mukesh.

The film was based on the novel by Gulshan Nanda, the 1971 film features the story of the double life of Madhavi, played by Asha Parekh, who got her first Filmfare Award of the Best Heroine for this role.

Sharmila Tagore who was a favourite heroine of Shakti Samanta did not get this role because she was pregnant at that time. Asha Parekh who had earlier worked with Samanta was the natural choice for this film.  He had cast her in his earlier film,  Pagla Kahin Ka.

Rajesh Khanna and Asha Parekh had already been paired in a few films like Aan Milo Sajna,  their pairing was also acceptable to the audience.  This film too was a hit and was  the sixth highest-earning Bollywood film of 1971

O P Nayyar- The Creator of Timeless Classics

OP Nayyar was among the Top 5 Composers of the Golden Era. Some of the great musical films were Aar Paar(1954), Mr & Mrs 55(1955) ,  CID(1956), Tumsa Nahin Dekha (1957), Howrah Bridge (1958), Jaali Note (1960), Ek Musafir Ek Hasina (1962), Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon (1963), Kashmir Ki Kali (1964), Mere Sanam (1965), Baharen Phir Bhi Aayegi (1966), Kismat (1968) and Pran Jaye Par Vachan Na Jaye (1973)

His songs had a unique freshness, a rare robust beat, a flowing style similar to what you feel when you dip your hand in a running stream, blending Punjabi folk music with a rare Western-style orchestration, never heard before or since. His variety of rhythm patterns baffles the film industry, even today.

He was not only a great Composer but also singer-songwriter, music producer, and musician. He wrote, "Yeh Desh Hai Veer Jawaanonkaa" (featuring Dilip Kumar and Ajit) for Naya Daur (1957).
He won the 1958 Filmfare Award for Best Music Director(for Naya Daur). Nayyar worked extensively with singers Geeta DuttAsha Bhosle and Mohammed Rafi later Mahendra Kapoor gave us many memorable songs.

O. P. Nayyar (16 January 1926 – 28 January 2007  ) started his career as a movie music composer by composing the background score for the movies, Kaneez (1949) and made debut as an independent composer from Aasmaan (1952). He became famous with the music of Aar Paar released in 1954 and CID released in 1956. All the songs of CID were super hit especially "Leke Pehla Pehla Pyar" and "Aye Dil Hai Mushkil Jeena Yahaan"

In the late 1960s, Nayyar fell out with his favourite Mohammad Rafi but managed to conjure memorable songs even with Mukesh (Chal akela), Mahendra Kapoor (Lakhon hai yahan dilwale) and Kishore Kumar (Tu auron ki kyon ho gayee).

A major blow was Nayyar's split with Asha Bhosle after the pair had reached a crescendo with the Filmfare Award  winning Chein se humko kabhie in Pran Jaaye Par Vachan Na Jaaye (1974). Nayyar tried recreating the magic with new singers but musical trends had bypassed him by then He worked till the 1990s but his music was not appealing to the young generation.
On the later stage of his life, he was living with his friend. He left his family members even asked none of his family to be present on his funeral. He died on 28 January 2007.
