Guru Dutt-The Maker of Commercial Films with Artistic Flvour

Guru Dutt was a part of the exclusive school of Indian cinema -- the likes of Raj Kapoor, Mehboob Khan and Bimal Roy, which were always a healthy blend of artistic and commercial elements between mid '50s and '60s.
He is most famous for making brilliant lyrical and artistic films within the context of popular Indian cinema of the 1950s, and expanding its commercial conventions, starting with his 1957 masterpiece, Pyaasa. Several of his later works have a cult following. He was one of the pillars of the a Golden Era of Bollywood.
Guru Dutt (9th July 1925) was born Vasanth Kumar Shivashankar Padukone in Bangalore to Shivashankar Rao Padukone and Vasanthi Padukone
Guru Dutt had a tough childhood with financial difficulties, and a strained relationship between his parents. He was a good student, but never went to college, partly because of financial troubles at home. Instead, he joined the performing arts troupe of Uday Shankar.
He joined his parents in Mumbai in 1944. Dutt's uncle found him a job under a three-year contract with the Prabhat Film Company in Pune the same year. It is here that Guru Dutt met two people who would remain his good friends -- actors Rehman and Dev Anand.y
Guru Dutt acted in a small role as Sri Krishna in Chand in 1944. In 1945, he acted as well as assisted director Vishram Bedekar in Lakhrani, and in 1946 he worked as an assistant director and choreographed dances for P.L. Santoshi's film, Hum Ek Hain.
Guru Dutt developed a flair for writing in English, and wrote short stories for The Illustrated Weekly of India, a local weekly English magazine.
It is during this time that he is supposed to have written the script for the almost autobiographical Pyaasa.
After Prabhat failed in 1947, Dutt moved to Bombay, where he worked with two leading directors of the time, with Amiya Chakravarty in Girl's School, and with Gyan Mukherjee in the Bombay Talkies film Sangram. Then, Dev Anand offered him a job as a director in his new company, Navketan, after the first movie had flopped.
Thus, Guru Dutt's first film, Navketan's Baazi, was released in 1951.
He made the quintessential 1950-'60s classics such as Kaagaz Ke Phool, Pyaasa, Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam and Chaudhvi Ka Chaand.
His movies go full house when re-released; especially in Germany, France and Japan. Today, no world cinema class is complete without inclusion of Guru Dutt. Pyaasa was rated as one of the best 100 films of all time by the Time Magazine.
Dutt's Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959) was an intense disappointment. He had invested a great deal of love, money, and energy in this film, which was a self-absorbed tale of a famous director (played by Guru Dutt) who falls in love with an actress (played by Waheeda Rehman, Dutt's real-life love interest). Kaagaz Ke Phool failed at the box office and Dutt was devastated. Though he produced 2 films after that Chaudhvi Ka Chand and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, both the films recovered his loses but he never recovered from his mental state.he was not on good terms with his wife, Geeta Dutt; Waheeda Rehman had distanced with him. There was sleeping trouble that had him taking sleeping aid, and he was drinking since 5 pm that evening. Suicide or a lethal dose -- it was a loss to Indian cinema industry?
On October 10, 1964, Guru Dutt was found dead in his bed in his rented apartment at Pedder Road in Bombay. He is said to have been mixing alcohol and sleeping pills. His death may have been suicide, or just an accidental overdose.

Abrar Alvi- The man who wrote many classics of Bollywood

In Ten years with Guru Dutt, Abrar Alvi takes us on his nostalgic journey from how he, a simple driver/chaperone became one of the most famous writers in Hindi cinema. The decade of 1953 to 1964 shaped Abrar's life with the exposure to the finest nuances of cinema making he learned from Guru Dutt and how he amazingly belted out dialogues/scripts for the classics like Aar Paar, Mr & Mrs 55, Pyaasa, Kagaz ke Phool to name a few.
He has also directed a single movie in his career for filmmaker Guru Dutt — it’s the classic ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’ released in 1962, which won President’s Silver Medal for best feature film in Hindi and Filmfare best director award. He lived most of his life as Guru Dutt’s resident writer.

He first met Guru Dutt during the shooting of Baaz in 1953 when Guru Dutt was having problems with a scene in the movie .Abrar Alvi suggested his opinion for that scene. Guru Dutt was so impressed that he invited Abrar to write Aar-Paar, after which Abrar became an integral part of the Guru Dutt team
There was a controversy emerged after the successful release of Sahib Biwi Aur Gulam in 1963 that who was the real director of the movie, However, Guru Dutt never denied Abrar Alvi's role in the film, nor did he make any counter-claims when Alvi won the Filmfare Award for Best Director for the film. Abrar Alvi has stated that Guru Dutt did direct the songs in the film, but not the film in its entirety. The editor of the film Y.G. Chawan says that for the film, it was Abrar who sat with him.
After this controversy ,Abrar, however, continued to pen screenplay and dialogue for several movies, some of these were hits, such as Baharen Phir Bhi Ayengi,Professor, Suraj, Sungharsh, Saathi,Prince etc.

He also acted in Laila Majnu (1976) and 12 O’Clock (1958).
Abrar Alvi died due to a stomach complication on 18th November 2009 in Mumbai at the age of 82. He is still remembered for his simple and clear dialogues in Indian Cinema.

Raj Khosla- A director with a fantastic ear for music

Raj Khosla ( 31 May 1925 – 9 June 1991) who came to Bombay to become a singer but he became an ace Director of the Golden Era. In his autobiography, Romancing With Life, Dev Anand mentions meeting a wannabe singer, Raj Khosla at a coffee joint around Mumbai's Flora Fountain. Dev Anand helped him and gave him a job of an assistant to Guru Dutt for the Navketan film Baazi 1951. It was to be the beginning of a very productive film career. He assisted Guru Dutt in his subsequent films.
Khosla would soon make his debut with Milap (1955). Contrary to his training, his first film was a story about a country bumpkin (Dev Anand, naturally) who comes into a fortune and does not know what to do with it. While the film was a flop, it had glimpses of Khosla's craftsmanship and a fine ear for music. One he would put to great use over his next films.

Guru Dutt who was producing CID (1956), had the confidence of Raj Khosla's capabilities gave Raj Khosla another chance of directing the film. The film starring Dev Anand was a hit After this came  Kala Pani (1958), Solva Saal (1958), Bombai Ka Babu (1960). Of these, C.I.D. is the perfect example of the template that would become Khosla's signature style.
His early background in classical music ensured that most of his films excelled in music. Art of picturising a song he learned from Guru Dutt. In most of his films, he would have at least a song based on folk tune e.g. C.I.D.Bambai Ka BabuSolva SaalMera SaayaDo RaasteMera Gaon Mera Desh to name a few.
Despite his traditionality in sticking to the formulaic tropes of the noir genre, Khosla added a uniquely Indian touch to it through music. A director with a fantastic ear for music, his films are remembered for their memorable musical scores. SD Burman, OP Nayyar, even RD Burman (who played the harmonica in 'Hai Apna Dil Toh Awara' in Solva Saal) benefitted with the nuanced picturisation of their songs by Khosla.

After Bombai Ka Babu(1960) he directed Ek Musafir Ek Hasina (1962).It was a musical film which was again a hit. After that, he directed suspense thrillers (Woh Kaun Thi? (1964), Mera Saaya (1966), Anita (1967) – his mystery trilogy with actress Sadhana), melodramas (Do Badan (1966), Do Raaste(1969)) or dacoit dramas (Mera Gaon Mera Desh (1971) .He also had hits like Prem Kahani (1975) starring the then hottest pair of the day Rajesh Khanna and MumtazNehle Pe Dehla (1976) andMain Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki (1978). One common factor of all these films was its hit music
After enjoying big hits like Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki (1978) and Dostana (1980) with Amitabh BachchanZeenat Aman and Shatrughan Sinha, Khosla ran into some rough weather as his other films started flopping. A dispirited Khosla took refuge in alcohol and died in Mumbai on 9 June 1991, totally disillusioned with the film industry.

Baazi- The Film that was a trendsetter and gave Bollywood many Legends

There are some films which are iconic, Navketan's Baazi released in 1951 is also such film which gave the Hindi Film Industry many legends. The film is notable for two reasons: first, being the directorial debut of Guru Dutt and second, it was the film which inspired many urban crime thrillers in the fifties. This was the second film of Dev Anand's production house Navketan Films, and as per a commitment was given by Dev Anand to Guru Dutt in their days of struggle, the movie was directed by Guru Dutt.

The movie begins with hands being shown gambling, just in case if we viewers missed the point. A look at the credits makes you feel that the ‘who is who’ of the remaining years of the 50s are represented there. First of all this film gave us the Star Dev Anand who in the years to come to become the Style Icon of Bollywood. The second person to become Legendary Director of Bollywood was Guru Dutt.the third legend in making was S D Burman the great composer of Golden Era of Bollywood. Next legendary personality was Kalpna Kartik who later married Dev Anand made her debut with this film.

Balraj Sahni, who had just returned after a stint with the BBC was entrusted with the story, screenplay and dialogues. Zohra Sehgal was brought in to choreograph the dance sequences. A young poet named Sahir Ludhianvi was given a chance to pen lyrics for the songs who later became a Legendary Lyricist and poet.
Sahir

Raj Khosla served as an assistant director who became a legendary Director. A bus conductor who Sahni had seen entertaining passengers was called in for a cameo, to play a drunkard, and while the film credits him by his real name Badruddin, after Baazi, the world knew him as Johnny Walker.

The other Legendary personalities were the Cinematographers V Ratra and his assistant V K Murthy who gave memorable cinematography of all Guru Dutt’s films, (including PyaasaSahib Bibi aur Ghulamand Kagaz ke Phool) has earned Murthy a place in the history of Hindi cinema. He was awarded a ‘lifetime achievement award’ by the Indian International Film Academy in 2008. This came as belated recognition by the Bombay film industry for the contribution made to its evolution by technicians such as V.K. Murthy.
V K Murthy

In his autobiography Romancing with Life, Devsaab reminisces: “Baazi gave me an image that stayed in the minds of people, and made a genuine star out of me. For the first time, I felt and saw what stardom was in terms of adulation and fan following. I became a phenomenon after the release of Baazi.”

Bollywood can never forget the Friendship of Dev Anand and Guru Dutt

The two young men struggling to find a foothold in the Bombay film Industry became friends in a studio. the one was struggling Actor and other was a struggling Director. On the Friendship Day Let's remember the friendship between the two Legends Dev Anand and Guru Dutt.
It happened in Prabhat studio where Dev Anand was doing his first film Hum Ek Hain, Guru Dutt was the Assistant Director and Choreographer of that film. Both were staying in that studio in an apartment. One day Dev Anand saw Guru Dutt was wearing his shirt. On enquiring, Dutt admitted that the shirt got swapped in the laundry and since he didn't have any spare shirt so he wore it. This incident became the foundation of a great friendship.
After this incident both started living together and spending time together.both were talented and dreaming to make it big in Bollywood. they promised each other that if Guru Dutt turns a filmmaker he would take Dev as his Hero and If Dev makes a film he will take Guru Dutt as the Director.

The dream did come true. After Dev Anand started Navketan, he asked Guru to direct Navketan’s second film, Baazi in 1950. It was then Guru’s turn to give his best for his dear friend. Guru Dutt exhibited his unique style and showed expertise in song sequences. However, Guru was under-confident when it came to the film’s climax and, unexpectedly, even went into hibernation at Mangalore. Dev’s elder brother, Chetan, shot the climax to some extent and persuaded Guru to return. Chetan and Dev restored confidence in Guru and he completed the post-directional work. The film became hit that established Guru Dutt as a Director.
The second film of Guru Dutt was Jaal released in 1952 Jaal sees one of Dev Anand’s best ever performances as he mixes his dark side with his charming one perfectly. In 1953 he directed a film Baaz in which he himself became Hero with Geeta Bali as his heroine but the film flopped. After that, he produced and directed and also acted in Aar Paar in 1954.Side by side he also produced CID in which he took Dev Anand thus fulfilled the promise made earlier.
Though they all worked separately after CID, Guru was highly instrumental for the success of Navketan’s production, Kala Pani, in 1958. Raj and Guru brought in Lachhu Maharaj to choreograph the immortal songs, Nazar Lagi Raja and Hum Bekhudi Mein. Khosla shot all the intense court scenes of the film under Guru’s guidance.
Dev Anand in an interview said that their friendship remained intact even Guru Dutt and he was not working together. Both were busy making films so couldn't meet frequently.
Guru Dutt was having trouble in his marriage and with the flop of Kagaz Ke Phool, he was completely shattered. Though Guru regained success with Chaudhivian Ka Chand (1961) and Saheb Biwi Aur Ghulam (1962), he quit direction soon after. On October 6, 1964, he came back to Dev with the idea of directing him and Waheeda in a serious, social film for Navketan. He was bent on Vijay Anand, Dev’s younger brother to edit the film. Dev welcomed his true friend back with open arms.
Unfortunately four days after the conversation, Guru committed suicide.Dev Anand was shooting for Teen Deviyan when he got this news. He immediately rushed to his house infact he was the first person to be there on the spot.
It was a pathetic sight — a sobbing Anand holding the dead Guru’s hand and repeatedly saying, “Guru.Uth Kahan Chala Gaya Tu (Guru, get up. Where have you gone?)”. Consoling a speechless Geeta, Dev broke down. Remembering this immortal friendship seems the best way to mark the Friendship Day

Guru Dutt- An Institution.

Born on July 9, 1925, in Bangalore, Guru Dutt was the eldest of five children born to Vasanti and Shivkumar Padukone. He spent more than a decade in Bhawanipore in Calcutta, where Guru Dutt finished his schooling. Not surprisingly, Guru Dutt spoke fluent Bengali and carried a distinct stamp of Bengali culture in his work. As a child, Guru Dutt was fond of two things: dance and animals.it was his love for dance that laid the foundation of a career in cinema.
The 16-year-old Guru Dutt joined Shankar's dance academy in Almora on a scholarship of Rs 75.The dance troupe was disbanded during the Second World War because of financial problems, and Guru Dutt finally joined V. Shantaram's Prabhat Film Company, then a formidable film production house, in 1945. It was here that he met three of his close friends, actors Dev Anand and Rehman and director Raj Khosla, all on Prabhat rolls then.Dev anand in an interview said that we struck a deal over a glass of beer and then he said Dev..if I ever become a director you are my star and I said if I ever form a company and I invite a directory to direct a film you’re going to be the one.
So he brought him in for Baazi so that type of friendship. Then he made CID, he invited me to do a picture. Then he made Jaal and then he branched off on his own.. made his own pictures starred himself. Dev branched off. he brought in his brother Vijay Anand for Nau Do Gyarah..
Dev Anand-Guru Dutt repeated their magic at the box office with breezy crime-based thrillers like Jaal (1952) and CID (1956). Guru Dutt formed his own banner and made Baaz (1953), Aar Paar (1954) and Mr and Mrs 55 (1955). it was the entry of writer Abrar Alvi and cinematographer V.K. Murthy into Guru Dutt Films that changed the tenor of his cinema. 'Guru Dutt never repeated a writer till he joined him in Aar Paar. After that, he never hired another writer,' Together, they created some of India's most admired films ' Pyaasa (1957), Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959) and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962). While Pyaasa and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam did well at the box office, it was the failure of Kaagaz Ke Phool, the semi-autobiographical story of a sensitive filmmaker who refuses to stand up to the pretentiousness of the tinsel world ' that broke Guru DuttDutt could never accept the failure of Kaagaz ke Phool. He never directed another film.
Though he produced his next film Chaudhvin ka Chand in 1960 directed by Abrar Alvi  and it was a smashing hit. Dutt also made Sahib Biwi aur Ghulam (1962) with Alvi, and there’ve been rumours about Dutt having ghost directed the movie. Sahib Biwi Ghulam was both commercially and critically successful but he was a broken man. What was running in his mind no body knows.Dev Anand in an interview said that 5 days before his death he met Guru Dutt,he wanted to make a film with him for which Dev agreed and asked him to show the script. He died on 10 th October
He lives on in his works. Some of us will always – Hum aap ki aankhon mein, is dil ko basa de toh for him as he continues to live through his cinema.1964

10 unsuccessful Love Stories of Bollywood Stars

Time and again, we hear about the love affairs among Bollywood stars. While some go on to tie the knot, many end up with broken hearts. We have seen our favorite stars fall in love (sometimes outside their marriage), Unfortunately they did not end up marrying each other.Starting from the famous Trio of Golden Era of Bollywood to the recent Hritik and Kangana Breakup. These Love affairs and gossips rarely die, especially in Bollywood at least.
Here are 10 such Tragic Love Stories of our Bollywood stars, witnessed over the years, that ended on a sad note.
.

Dev Anand and Suraiya-  The First &  Great love story of Bollywood was Dev Suraiya;s Love story .Suraiya  was already a superstar when Dev entered the industry. Suraiya traveled in American sedans. Her entourage reflected a regal aura. It included several servants and members of her family. Dev was fascinated by Suraiya. He would keep complimenting her. Later, the admiration grew mutual. Suraiya, too, showered praises on Dev. The two did seven films together — Vidya (1948), Jeet (1949), Shair (1949), Afsar(1950), Nili (1950), Do Sitare (1951) and Sanam (1951). Till their first three films no one suspected a romance between them. However, after 1951, Suraiya’s orthodox family members started dictating her life. It was during the shooting of Afsar that their romance became public and the opposition to their relationship became much more intense.According to Dev, their romance was at its zenith when they were paired in lead role for Afsar (1950). The music for this film was composed by S.D. Burman. The soulful "Man-mor hua matwala, yeh kisne jadoo dala, re yeh kisne jadoo dala" is among Suraiya’s best. While shooting for the movie, their affair became a hot topic for the Bombay tabloids. The villain of their Love Story was Suraiya's Grandmother. She used to visit studio during the shooting, once she disrupted the shooting of a love sequence. She went to the extent of not allowing them to shoot even innocent love scenes like kissing on the eyelashes.
Song from Vidya 1948

Whenever Dev came to visit Suraiya at her apartment, he found his detractors already sitting in the drawing room. For Dev, this torture was becoming unbearable. Suraiya was so much hurt by her family’s uncalled for interference and stubbornness that her acting and singing career started taking a nosedive from 1951 onward. It was the religion that was coming in between their story. Suraiya’s grandmother Badshah Begum threatened to end her life if Suraiya tied the knot with Dev Anand, who belonged to a different faith. Many people say the old lady had a covert reason for opposing Suraiya and Dev Anand’s marriage, the fact that Suraiya was the highest earning member of the large family. The relationship could not culminate into a wedlock, and Suraiya and Anand worked for one last time with the film Do Sitare in 1951. It is said after the completion of the film, the two met at Suriaya’s apartment, in presence of Anand’s elder brother Chetan Anand one last time. The doleful lovers sobbed throughout their last conversation, and later Suraiya threw Anand’s proposal ring into the sea. It was a sad end of a sweet love story, and needless to say the pair was shattered. The sweet dream of Suraiya and Dev Anand’s marriage was sent to it’s end.Dev Anand moved on after this but Suraiya remained Unmarried till death.

Madhubala And Dilip Kumar-Dilip Kumar and Madhubala worked in 4 films, the first movie they did together was Tarana in 1951.Madhubala, who was to appear in Jwar Bhata, in which Dilip Kumar was playing the lead role. She was unable to work in the movie but this was the moment the youngster first set eyes on Dilip Kumar.

Madhubala and Dilip Kumar met seven years later on the sets of Tarana when she was eighteen years old. During the shooting she sent her hairdresser with a note written in Urdu together with a red rose asking him to accept it if he loved her, which intrigued and amused Dilip Kumar and naturally he accepted the rose.Their next film was Sangdil(1952)  During this time Madhubala had an intimate relationship with Dilip. In fact it was widely believed that the stunning pair would eventually get married by this time the two were involved in an intimate relationship. The early fifties were Madhubala's best years. She was rapturously and ecstatically in love and exuded happiness..Dilip Kumar in his Biography said "She, as I said earlier, was very sprightly and vivacious and, as such, she could draw me out of my shyness and reticence effortlessly. She filled a void that was crying out to be filled - not by an intellectually sharp woman but a spirited woman whose liveliness and charm were the ideal panacea for the wound that was taking its own time to heal".

When Mughal e Azam started, they were in love but during the making their affair broke down,as we all know that the film took 10 years to complete. The reason of their break up was Madhubala's father.
Ataullah Khan who didn't want Madhubala to marry Dilip Kumar. In his Biography recently released Dilip Kumar wrote that the reason of their break up was Madhubala's father who actually wanted to make a film with him but Dilip refused. This hurt his ego so he made a point how Madhubala marry Dilip Kumar. Madhubala was very obedient daughter couldn't go against the wish of her father. The couple though did carry on their affair in this manner for a few years. The stress and inability to have a proper relationship took their toll and finally in 1957 they finally broke up. They never paired together after their break up, in fact both were in Naya Daur but due to her father  Madhubala opted out from that film.Ataullah sued, and BR Chopra counter sued. Eventually the whole fiasco was dragged into court. At some point in the trial the personal relationship between Dilip Kumar and Madhubala was put down as evidence, and their whole affair was put under the spotlight.

Raj Kapoor and Nargis-Raj Kapoor was the original showman of Bollywood and Nargis Dutt was the beautiful talented actress who had carved a niche for herself in Bollywood. The romance between the two was meant to be. They were named as first couple of Bollywood.Raj Kapoor, with whom Nargis worked in as many as 16 films, six of which were RK banner productions, was undoubtedly the first love of her life. She was only 19 when Raj Kapoor came to her life.If it hadn't been Raj, it would have been someone else; he just happened to be her first boyfriend.
Song from Chori Chori

Raj Kapoor and Nargis met for the first time during the making of the film Andaz in the year 1949. It is said that Kapoor fell for Nargis the moment he saw her, and that marked the beginning of a partnership that spanned 16 films. Nargis became a common fixture in almost all of Kapoor’s films in the 1950s, since she was equally smitten by Kapoor and thus would give a nod right away to any of his films.Raj Kapoor was already married that time, she did not mind marrying him and playing second fiddle in his life. She even consulted several leading legal experts of that era to find some means to tie the knot to a married man. Raj Kapoor never wanted to marry her being already father of three children that time.By the mid-1950s, Kapoor had made this point to Nargis, and the film Chori Chori in 1956 was the last one they did together. Nargis is said to have slipped into depression after this revelation but soon got out when she fell in love with Sunil Dutt during the making of Mother India. with whom she tied the knot in 1958. It is said that Raj Kapoor was so dejected on hearing the news of Sunil and Nargis’ marriage that he locked himself in his room, and cried for hours together.

Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman-Guru Dutt was a successful director, producer and actor, he introduced Waheeda Rehman to bollywood through C.I.D released in 1956.Guru Dutt was already married to singer Geeta Roy when he fell in love for Waheeda Rehman. It was during the making of Pyaasa Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman came together.Different versions of the love affair suggest that it was Waheeda who initiated marriage proposals to Dutt, or that Geeta’s suspicious nature that made Dutt confide in Waheeda. Both of them worked together in 6 films. Some say that Kagaz Ke Phool (1959) was on the real life of both the actors. The last film they did together was Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam(1962).

Song from Chaudhavi Ka Chand 1960

There is a book"Memories Of Guru Dutt by Abrar Alvi which  tells the inside story behind the Guru Dutt-Waheeda Rehman romance as it is. One really feels sorry for the legendary actress on realizing how callow she was in understanding the crooked ways of Bollywood. Guru was indeed torn between the love for his wife and the other woman. However, he couldn’t  take a stand and ended up dropping Waheeda Rehman from his life. Abrar claims that Waheeda considered him her elder brother and describes the events that led to the ‘nikah’ of Guru Dutt and Waheeda that never happened. We come to know that Waheeda had a brother-in-law Rauf who announced that Guru Dutt was converting to Islam to marry her. Eventually, Guru Dutt chickened out at the last moment without realizing that his marriage with Geeta Dutt was long over. In the end, it seems that he caused Waheeda such a grievous hurt from which only work and more work could provide solace to the talented actress-cum-dancer. Clearly, ditching Waheeda.
Geeta Dutt left Guru Dutt in despair, which drove him towards complete isolation. Things worsened so much that both Guru and Geeta took to heavy drinking, and finally Guru Dutt died in 1964.

Rajesh Khanna and Anju Mahendru- This love story started well before Rajesh Khanna became super star.Anju Mahendru was the first love of India's first superstar Rajesh Khanna. Both were struggling to find a foothold in the industry when they met each other some time in the 60's. Anju was an aspiring model and actor while Rajesh Khanna was selected by the United  Film Producer's Association as a hero. In the early days of their relationship, Anju supported his dreams like a devoted girlfriend. Rajesh too cared for her and reportedly lavished his affection and earnings upon her. Once the actor became super successful he charmed and convinced Anju into putting aside her career for him. The madly-in-love starlet obliged and soon became Rajesh Khanna's official girlfriend and the two of them shared a live-in relationship for close to seven years. Rajesh Khanna became the heart-throb of millions after the release of Aradhana in 1969.Even after that their relationship continued but  cracks started appearing in their relationship.Their clashing values and opinions led to many altercations. In one of her interviews, Anju stated, "He is a very orthodox man, yet somehow, is always attracted to ultra-modern girls. Confusion was a part of our relationship. If I wore a skirt, he'd snap, why don't you wear a sari? If I wore a sari, he'd say, why are you trying to project a Bhartiya nari look?" And due to many such squabbles and arguments, the couple ended their relationship.
It is said that to take revenge on Anju, Rajesh Khanna completely ruined her career. Reportedly, the whole film industry blamed the actor for the break up and supported Anju. This made the actor furious and he blamed Anju and her friends for all the negative publicity.
